Dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) technology has been in development since the 1990s and is now being commercialized for building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV) and other applications. DSSC has the potential to generate electricity from surfaces like roofs and facades in a cost-effective way. Recent developments include the first DSSC BIPV facade in 2003, the first commercial DSSC product in 2009, and current partnerships focused on developing DSSC-coated steel and glass for roofs and buildings. The future outlook for DSSC is positive as the technology continues to progress toward widespread commercialization and large-scale manufacturing.
