1. Noah: Leaders do what’s right even if they are alone
In Genesis 6, God is despairing over the wickedness that has overtaken humanity. Reluctantly, he decides to wipe out the human race and start from scratch. Noah, however, is the only one who has not been corrupted. You know the story. God tells him to build an ark that will save him, his family, and a whole host of animal life. As he is boarding the ark, God says to him, “for you alone I have seen to be righteous before Me in this time.” Literally the whole world was doing what was wrong. But did that deter Noah from doing what was right? Not a chance!
2. Abraham: Leaders embrace the unknown
God approaches Abraham in Genesis 12 and tells him to “Go forth from your country, and from your relatives and from your father’s house, to the land which I will show you.” In other words, Abraham is instructed to leave his comfort zone and march onward into uncertainty. As business leaders, that’s a hot topic: managing risk and uncertainty. Great leaders embrace that uncertainty, because they know the truth: the promised land awaits them on the other side.
3. Joseph: Leaders endure in spite of circumstances
The story of Joseph beginning in Genesis 37 is powerful. The guy had a pretty tough life. He was sold into slavery by his jealous brothers. His father was told that he was killed by a wild animal. He was framed by his boss’s wife because he refused to sleep with her and was thrown into prison. He interpreted the dream of a prisoner who was released and restored.

Hebrew History
Originated in Mesopotamia and migrated to Canaan. Although the Canaanites already inhabited the land of Canaan, Abraham thought that God had promised the land to him. Scholars are not sure today how the taking of Canaan came about, but we do have the accounts from the Bible. And although the Bible is a historical book, it is not a historical document. The Hebrews wrote the Bible not to keep track of historical events, but to teach lessons and lift the spirit of the Hebrews in hard times.
According to the Bible, the Hebrews migrated to Egypt because of drought and famine in the land of Canaan sometime after 1700 B.C.E., where they were enslaved. During this time, Moses is tasked with liberating the Hebrews from Egypt. In the Hebrew tradition, the Hebrews returning to Canaan from Egypt is called the Exodus.
The Hebrews then structured their leadership with 12 tribes. Each tribe had elders known as Judges under God for around 200 years. Eventually, the Hebrews felt the threat of the Philistines, which made the Hebrews elect a king for the first time, named Saul. This first king was charismatic, but did not live up to the expectations of the Israeli people. Along came king David, who was very popular. David was also a writer and a brilliant politician. Scholars attribute the creation of this Israeli kingdom to David. David also turned Jerusalem into the kingdom's center and brought the Ark of the Covenant to Jerusalem. The Ark of the Covenant was an elaborately crafted, gold-covered, wooden chest containing the two tablets bearing the Ten Commandments given to Moses by God. It also included Mana (the food provided by God to the Israelites in the desert) and Aaron's rod (Moses' walk stick that had miraculous powers). The Ark of the Covenant is considered the most sacred relic to the Israelites.
When David died, his son Solomon became king of Israel and further developed the kingdom. One of his major achievements was building a Temple for God. Now Jerusalem was complete. It had a king, a city, and a temple. This was the only temple for worshiping the Hebrew God. But, to accomplish this, Solomon had to increase taxes. Lots of construction meant that money was needed for the projects. "Old tribal patterns weakened as urban life expanded and some people gained wealth. A large measure of economic equality had .

In the book of Acts, Paul speaks of God’s feelings about King David:
“And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave their testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will.” (Acts 13:22).

- 3. The Historical Old Testament Book of First Chronicles, focuses on the reign of King David. It analyzes the affairs of Judah in terms of whether or not the governing king faithfully led the nation in the ways of the Lord. It demonstrates that the Lord blessed the nation when the people faithfully served Him. But it also showed that the Lord punished the nation when they were unfaith to Him.
- 4. First Chronicles also show how God’s people – Israel - in the Old Testament fit into His plan. We can learn for our theme this month, how God’s people today fit into His plan. The book will remind us that God’s people will not prosper unless they, “collectively” walk in His righteousness. A key point in the book is the leadership of God’s chosen vessel - David. When David faithfully followed the Lord, the nation flourished, but when he did not the nation suffered.
- 5. WHAT TO LOOK FOR • The emphasis on building a true spiritual foundation for God’s people. • The importance of religious purity. • The focus on the law of God and the temple. • The focus of worship and praise as a response to the person and acts of God.
- 6. LESSONS WE CAN LEARN 1. Those who are in a special, covenant relationship with the LORD will experience a rich heritage and blessings. 2. The place of worship should be treated special because it reflects God’s glory. 3. The manner in which we worship is an open display of our gratitude to Whom we worship.
