Franz von Benda-Beckmann comments on an article by Sally Engle Merry in the Law and Society Review. He notes that Merry's article discusses the relationship between legal pluralism and informal, non-state justice systems in developing countries. Benda-Beckmann agrees with Merry's assessment that these informal justice systems play an important role in mediating disputes and social control but are not necessarily in conflict with state legal systems as is often assumed.
