Editor's Notes
‘Without continual growth and progress, such words as improvement, achievement and success have no meaning.’
Without continued growth and progress in the Capricornia region, we will fail to develop as a community. Growth and progress is essential in our region in order to: Improve our prosperity;Achieve economic growth in the region; andTo succeed at making the Capricorn Coast a thriving business and tourism mecca.
‘Growing up along the pristine coasts of Central Queensland was a great as a child; however, I reached adolescences I began to grow more frustrated by the lack of growth in the region. I saw the potential back then. And I still see it now. There are so many opportunities for development and growth in the region. My plan as the newly elected MP, is to help the community to realise these opportunities, so we can progress and grow as a district.’
My vision includes plans to boost the region’s business and tourism industries, in order to increase the local economy.
‘The Capricorn Coast has some of the world’s most pristine beaches and National Parks; and yet, our local tourism industry is dismal. In the Great Barrier Reef region, the tourism industry is a major employer and economic driver. And yet, our community is not taking advantage of its gorgeous natural resources. ‘
My proposal to increase the local tourism industry is through the implementation of a ten year strategic plan:New Visitor Information CentreAn appointed Local Tourism LeaderIncreased visibility for the region’s tourism industry(to name a few)
Following this, the speech will move onto increasing opportunities for small businesses within the area. This section will highlight the various proposals intended to increase business growth in the region.
Cutting red tape to help small businesses prosper in town and on the land.Look at expanding Yeppoon’s Central Business District in order to meet the growing population. This expansion may be achieved by developing the old Yeppoon Railway Yards. Positioned directly across the road from the Keppel Bay Plaza, this location is an ideal area to develop. The issue of car parking in Yeppoon’s Central Business District will also be reviewed. Working in conjunction with the local Livingstone Shire Council the parking time limits will be reviewed.
Next I will discuss any obvious objections the community may have about my proposed plans for the region. The main objection that comes to mind when increasing tourism and business in an area like the Capricorn Coast is, what affect will this have on its unique ecosystem? I must ensure that I thoroughly research what affects this increase may have on the coast’s environment, as well as, the community’s attitudes and position towards growth.
In the conclusion I will restate the main points of my agenda, and reiterate the point that I will be working for the community in order for it to reach its full potential (this will hopefully be an ongoing theme).
I will also sum up my speech by thanking the community for their support and by thanking any other relevant parties.
