COMM120 FORUM2 The Communication Process What does the seven-part communication model do for the study of gender and communication? In what parts of the model can you identify gender and its influence? Please use concepts from your course readings in your answer. Some questions you may want to consider as you respond to the prompt: · When I ask what the model does for the study of communication and gender, I want to know if it helps us point out places and ways in which gender affects communication. Keep in mind that this part of the question doesn't ask about gender itself. Instead, it's asking about how scholars think, and whether or not those patterns are useful tools to explore this general topic. Is the model useful? Would something else be more useful? Further, what does he mean when he suggests we are consistently trying to manage the impressions of those with whom we interact? a paragraph explaining your topic, its sociological relevance, and the research question
two paragraphs on sampling/site selection (which site? why that site? which role will you take? how will you gain access to it?)
a paragraph reflecting on your relationship and if and/or how your presence may or may not impact the space and your observations
--I need to be able to read enough to give you feedback about the appropriateness of your sight for observation and its sociological relevance.

I also discourage observation of any group that cannot give consent freely, this includes:

Interviewing Guidelines
Please look through these guidelines for developing and conducting interviews.
Beginning the Interview
Start the interview with general questions. Begin by asking the interviewees to describe their
high school, what it was like, its size, what communities it served, and other information that you
think might provide context for the interviewees’ responses. For example, you might ask if it was
a politically homogeneous or heterogeneous community in terms of whether most students
supported similar political candidates and had the similar positions on particular issues. Once
you think some context has been established, ask the interviewees general questions about
their civic education in high school.
Middle of the Interview
At this point, you should be asking them about the use of digital media in their high school civic
education.
Ending the Interview
To end the interview, ask your interviewees what they would have liked to see in their civic
education; or, if they have any suggestions on how it could have been improved or made more
meaningful.
Sample Questions
You may use only two of these questions and come up with at least three of your own interview
questions that are informed by readings and lectures. Please note: the bulleted questions are to
be used for probing. In interviews, it is good begin with open questions, giving the interviewees
liberty to respond as they see fit. If their response does not answer your question, then ask the
question in a different manner, or probe. Probing questions are follow-up questions that you
may have about the interviewees’ responses, such as: why and how questions, asking them to
explain or describe, etc. In the sample questions below, I added some probing questions in case
the interviewees’ responses are vague or brief.

Horizontal communication

Informal communication
in organizations grows out of friendships, shared personal or career interests, and proximity. The messages shared through these networks of relationships within an organization can confirm, contradict, expand upon, or help an employee circumvent information relayed through the formal communication channels. Workers must navigate between formal and informal communication within a relationship. For example, your boss might drop by your desk to share some office gossip with you—and a few minutes later take you aside to talk about a project underway. Modern employers are seeking job candidates who demonstrate

It seems as though we are living in a time where it has become politically correct to throw low-blows and have unfair fights just to take the lead or stand out the most. In political races we see this all the time, politicians talk bad, make accusations on the other, and dig up any dirt they can find. Even if it is just the extended family members of the other. To me the more one political candidate throws dirt or low blows it makes them look bad. Not the face of America. Even professionals in the media have changed their ways of communication from professional to more laid back. I was once watching the news and one individual reported and said that the victim was "leaving his baby-momma house". So many viewers called into to the Viewers Voice and complained about how Shawn Rabb has reported the news unprofessionally, he is ghetto, and so much more. However the term "baby-momma" is more common than "mother of my children". Its the language of the culture that is changing. Working as a Juvenile Detention Officer I hear all types of synonyms. Some I used as a kid and others I need the meaning of and if they cant tell me what it means they can not use it.

The proposal should contain well-developed sections (Put clear titles on the top of each section) of your outline that you submitted earlier. The proposal should have seven (7) major sections:
1. Introduction: A brief overview of all your sections. Approx. one page
2. A summary of the literature review. In this section you would summarize the previous research (summarize at least 8-10 scholarly research articles), and also your field data collection results (if it was connected to your proposal topic). Also indicate the gaps in the previous research, including your pilot study, and the need for your research study. Please devote around three pages in reviewing the previous research and finding the gaps.
3. Arising from the literature review, write the Purpose Statement of your research (purpose statement should have all its parts clearly written. Follow the examples from textbook).
4. Identify two to three main hypotheses or research questions (based on the quantitative/qualitative research design). Also give some of your supporting research questions. Follow the examples from textbook.
5. Describe the research strategy of inquiry and methods that you would use and why. The method part should be the substantial part of your paper, around three pages. Define your knowledge claims, strategies, and methods from the textbook (and cite), why you chose them, and how you will conduct the research in detail.
6. A page on the significance of your study.
7. A complete reference list of your sources in APA style.
The total length of the paper should be between 8-10 pages (excluding the reference and cover pages).

Beginning the Interview
Start the interview with general questions. Begin by asking the interviewees to describe their
high school, what it was like, its size, what communities it served, and other information that you
think might provide context for the interviewees’ responses. For example, you might ask if it was
a politically homogeneous or heterogeneous community in terms of whether most students
supported similar political candidates and had the similar positions on particular issues. Once
you think some context has been established, ask the interviewees general questions about
their civic education in high school.
Middle of the Interview
At this point, you should be asking them about the use of digital media in their high school civic
education.
Ending the Interview
To end the interview, ask your interviewees what they would have liked to see in their civic
education; or, if they have any suggestions on how it could have been improved or made more
meaningful.
Sample Questions
You may use only two of these questions and come up with at least three of your own interview
questions that are informed by readings and lectures. Please note: the bulleted questions are to
be used for probing. In interviews, it is good begin with open questions, giving the interviewees
liberty to respond as they see fit. If their response does not answer your question, then ask the
question in a different manner, or probe. Probing questions are follow-up questions that you
may have about the interviewees’ responses, such as: why and how questions, asking them to

To me the more one political candidate throws dirt or low blows it makes them look bad. Not the face of America. Even professionals in the media have changed their ways of communication from professional to more laid back. I was once watching the news and one individual reported and said that the victim was "leaving his baby-momma house". So many viewers called into to the Viewers Voice and complained about how Shawn Rabb has reported the news unprofessionally, he is ghetto, and so much more. However the term "baby-momma" is more common than "mother of my children". Its the language of the culture that is changing. Working as a Juvenile Detention Officer I hear all types of synonyms. Some I used as a kid and others I need the meaning of and if they cant tell me what it means they can not use it.

A study was conducted to determine the effects of alcohol on human reaction times. Fifty-seven adult individuals within two-age groups were recruited for this study and were randomly allocated into one of three alcohol treatment groups – a control where the subjects remain sober during the entire study, a moderate group were the subject is supplied alcohol but is limited in such a way that their blood alcohol content (BAC) remains under the legal limit to drive (BAC of 0.08) and a group that received a high amount of alcohol to which their BAC may exceed the legal limit for driving. Each subject was trained on a video game system and their reaction time (in milliseconds) to a visual stimulus was recorded at 7 time points 30 minutes apart (labeled T0=0, T1=30, T2=60 and so on). At time point T0, all subjects were sober and those in one of the alcohol consumption groups began drinking after the first measured reaction time (controlled within the specifications outlined). The researcher is interested in determining the influence alcohol and age (namely, is reaction time different for those in the 20s versus 30s) has on reaction times.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. Some questions you may want to consider as you respond to the prompt: · When I ask what the model does for the study of communication and gender, I want to know if it helps us point out places and ways in which gender affects communication. Keep in mind that this part of the question doesn't ask about gender itself. Instead, it's asking about how scholars think, and whether or not those patterns are useful tools to explore this general topic. Is the model useful? Would something else be more useful? Why? · When I ask about the role of gender in each of the seven parts of the model (sender, receiver, context, message, channel, interference, and feedback), I'd like you to tell me if you can see any differences in the way people of different genders use or adapt to each part. For example, do people of a certain gender seem to use a specific channel or medium more often than other channels? Are there patterns to the type of feedback they give? How do gender characteristics diminish the effectiveness of a message--in other words, how do they interfere with communication? Questions like these should help with the second part of the prompt.
