  1. My name is Karina Popova, I am a developer evangelist @ whatever mobile. During last year we finally realized that Artificial Intelligence is functionally necessary to bring the huge number of sensor devices online. And it definitely will be even more important in making sense of data streamed in from IoT devices. So what will happen when we will learn how to combine AI, IoT and general tools?
  2. "whatever mobile GmbH" is a well-known german service provider that specializes in mobile technologies. For nearly 14 years we have been working closely together with our clients which gave us an excellent overview about the needs for mobile connectivity for IoT devices.
  3. To give you a brief introduction about the company: we have 50 excellent employees, almost 80 mill. transactions per month with 23 mill. € revenue in 2015, we provide access to more than 400 mobile networks worldwide, with excellent platform availability.
  4. The Quantified Self is our future… In short, quantified self is self-knowledge through self-tracking with technology. Self-knowledge through data on the aspects of a person's daily life in terms of inputs (e.g. food consumed, quality of surrounding air), states (e.g. mood, arousal ), performance (mental and physical). IT is driving the transformation from old-style systems and infrastructure to highly available, highly intelligent applications and services. Predictions for 2020 promise us lots of connected devices per person, tons of data per second to process, and we’re not even including IoT connected dogs and cats. How will all that data become actionable? Sometimes it helps to stop for a moment and see where all this is headed and what work, and life, would be like if all of these developments come true. The best advancements are coming in the areas of the IoT and artificial intelligence. How, exactly, will the world function once it has access to a global, interconnected computing environment that touches every device on the planet and has an ability to learn?
  5. Artificial intelligence has reached the point now where it can provide invaluable assistance in speeding up tasks still performed by people. Once computers can fully simulate a human brain and surpass it, it will cause an “intelligence explosion” that will radically change civilization. The rate of innovation will progress exponentially. AI will certainly go beyond self-driving vehicles and unmanned combat aircraft’s. It might develop consciousness - which mean machine could be sad or start questioning what it should do. As ex, 1.   6. IoT Won’t Work Without Artificial Intelligence Back to reality! As IoT producing a big hay stack of data and to be able to find needles in this hay stack you would need an artificiall inteliggence… Artificial intelligence will be an essential part of IoT systems as organisations struggle to make sense of the enormous amounts of data produced by the Internet of Things. Every large corporation tries to collect and maintain a huge amount of human-oriented data associated with its customers including their preferences, purchases, habits, and other personal information. Basically Internet of Things is all that data flowing between devices. AI-fying IoT is a BIG idea! Because big data alone means nothing. More important is relevant data.
  7. At some point The Internet of Things will become the biggest source of data on the planet. And IoT can let the machines point out where the opportunities truly are. But Data is most valuable to us when it can immediately inform action. That means that data must be collected and analyzed immediately to maintain a continuous flow of information and feedback within the enterprise and its connected devices. In order to analyze the data immediately as it’s collected to accurately identify previously known and never-before seen new patterns, it is necessary to provide real-time data collection. However, the big problem is still finding the ways to collect the deluge of performance data and information that all these devices create. Shops can be considered as a good example, for instance, whenever you buy, it observes your shopping patterns and suggests you with other related products you may be interested in. Entertainment apps pretty much do the same, they observe your previous interests and depending on them, they recommend you with similar music and movies respectively.
  8. So the Internet of Things is converting the objects that surround us everyday into a community of information that will increase the quality of our lives. Sensors are necessary to turn billions of objects into data-generating “things” that can report on their status, and in some cases, interact with their environment. IoT devices can certainly connect through a lot of different ways, my company particularly focus on cellular connectivity. Given the ubiquity of sim based devices, this IoT solutions can achieve an unbelievable level of coverage in both space and time for observing any events. Mobile connectivity is becoming an integral part of IoT. Most use cases that are designed for mobility, which in turn makes it an extremely compelling project topic. If we will combine it with AI, we soon will find ourselves surrounded by smart devices at home, at work and in between.
  9. But if the sensor is bound to a single connectivity solution you simply won’t always have the quality of network coverage and features that you need. And we are as developers experienced difficulties to achieve flexible, secure and global connectivity for our IoT devices. Such as high integration effort, different APIs, Network and Device Configurations Limitations and dependences on core network capabilities of the MNO It is also quite complex and difficult to enforce usage and security policies and the integration point with your infrastructure

  13. In the past few years we have learned a lot of experience in IoT projects. We discovered that choosing the right mobile connectivity for the IoT project, which fits the needs, is one of the most important and underrated choices a user can make.   14. We required the permanent connection on the device at any place with the maximum possible existing coverage worldwide, and ability to switch to the strongest network. The mobile connectivity with no preferred connection gives you a faster and easier way to the market, worldwide coverage provides global access instantly and you don’t need to check which operator is in the area where all your devices situated, every time it will be connected to the strongest network.
  15. There are network architectures that provides a direct access to all your mobile IoT/M2M Devices via IP. The communication can be restricted to certain IPs. The traffic is encrypted before transmitting data over public internet. SIM card can have locked function to a specific device, to make sure it cannot be used by unauthorized people The access to the public internet can be completely locked down and only the predefined IP address can be used through the VPN.
  16. Choosing the right way to communicate with the device, the opportunity to use static IP, establish bidirectional communication and status monitoring. With a simple push notification it is much easier to update and maintain the device: either connecting it or debugging it.
  17. Are you, for example, planning to track polar bears in the Arctic? Or are you using the SIM card in a very hot metal processing environment? Resistance of SIM cards to the temperature range from -40 to 221 Fahrenheit degrees, shocks, vibrations, and humidity could be the biggest issue. Make sure the SIM card has the form factor and correct protection you need. There are SIM cards with extended endurance for industrial applications, which means you can use the device in harsh environments or for a significant amount of time, which for example is ideal for the automotive sector.
  18. Consider the direct control over all SIM cards is one of the most important features, where you can manage the data in real time and check and adjust data usage, location and status of your devices in one customer portal or via API. Our experience has shown that real-time monitoring of the devices is fundamental for collecting data. It includes monitoring on the customer side, which may help to control measures like changing parameters (if too many or too few data has been collected, or if a specific sub-area must be covered better); observations may also lead to the creation of new data collection tasks.
  19. After hosting conferences and workshops and having many interactions with customers, we have come up with what we think is the solution - wherever SIM. With the help of multi-network sim card we easily could have our own network which replaces the core of existing operator network and which is Extremely scalable, Completely cloud-base and Globally distributed
  20. From the implementation side no more difficulties, which means we are not dependent on any operator anymore, no roaming prices, different sim cards and GSM connection would be available for us in any possible place. Each subset of sim cards is API programmable. We developed a platform that can help you to use concepts from artificial intelligence and applied those to the use case of smarter decision making in IoT. So a cloud-based architecture can correspond not only to a physical sensor but can also represent social media data, location data, generic API information, etc. The platform exposes a REST service, which means the sensors can be controlled from the outside, and the intelligent agent can be integrated as part of a bigger solution. In sum, we have developed a service for real-time data collection via GSM and support of decision making in IoT applications. Its API-driven architecture makes it very compatible.
  21. The network architecture provides a directly access all your mobile IoT/M2M Devices via IP. Your Application Server can directly access your devices by their static IP Address. Transparent network access allows to use any network protocols, only one VPN connection for all SIM-Cards, no VPN client required on mobile devices. Traffic is encrypted before transmitted over public internet, devices are isolated into dedicated private IPv4 Subnets Optionally the access to the public internet can be completely locked down and only predefined IP address can be used through the VPN.
  22. It is a big real-time sensor data analysis and decision-making in your hands, where you can visualize data for a deeper understanding, analyze patterns and make real-time changes automatically, the sensors in your project will allow computers to “hear,” gathering information about the environment.
  23. The billions of data points IoT produces must be organized. By paring them down to what’s important and analyzing this data, the public and private sectors benefit. This addresses everything from running a business, to military logistics, to ordering groceries. With REST API Patterns, problems, and correlations will be easier to address.
  24. IoT + AI use cases are around us. While IoT adds value to the products we already own and the services we already use, the data extracted from IoT is meant to tell marketers what we’ll want to own and what services we’ll use in the future. Some quick examples for AI + IoT data Helps cities predict accidents and crimes Gives doctors real-time insight into information from biochips Optimize productivity across industries through predictive maintenance on equipment and machinery Creates truly smart homes with connected appliances Provides critical communication between self-driving cars Location-based marketing is another important outcome of the two powerful technologies. These are just a few promising applications of Artificial Intelligence in IoT. The potential for highly individualized services are endless and will dramatically change the way people live.
  25. Applications of Artificial Intelligence to medicine have been increasing in recent years. Artificial Intelligence employed in the medical field mainly to perform a rational analysis of the data available from clinical examination in order to get a reliable diagnosis of the patient’s disease and a suitable decision support. Imagine you are 82 and still feeling quite fit. But your pulse has to be observed constantly, and your children are worried about you staying alone at your home. They’d rather have you move to an assisted accommodation, but you would like to stay in your home. Together with new technologies senior citizens are able to have an independent live much longer. The device which we created track pulse data and able to identify unusual behavior. If any figure reaches a critical state your doctor or relatives will automatically be informed. We decided to use in our showcase a SIM card, which means the connection is not dependent on an internet connection. It can also use the mobile network to transmit data or trigger an emergency call if the heart rate goes below or above a predefined threshold while the senior is in the supermarket. Our solution keeps relatives from worrying and gives elderly people the freedom to stay in their home longer without having to relinquish security and medical supervision. The first component is Gboard SIM800 is a unique Arduino board with an ATMega328P controller. The GPRS Shield is an a IoT panel, which provides you a way to communicate using the GSM cell phone network. The other main components of our project is Heart-rate Pulse Sensor suitable for Arduino. So the last component in our workshop today - whereverSIM.
  26. It requires to upload the code for the program using the arduino software. Workflow: Pulse sensor straps to finger Pulse sensor connects to an arduino affixed to a wrist strap. Red wire goes to 5V, black wire is grounded, and the purple wire should go to analog pin 0. Arduino broadcasts a signal Arduino connects to a remote server: Every time the BPM goes above or below threshold Remote server will: alert predefined individuals if the BPM threshold has been crossed via text message, or push notification Arduino watches the analog signal from Pulse Sensor, and decides a pulse is found when the signal rises above the mid-point. That's the moment when your capillary tissues gets slammed with a surge of fresh blood. Then, when the signal drops below the mid-point, Arduino sees this and gets ready to find the next pulse.
  27. Alarm system providers One of the biggest changes that the IoT has brought to homes is the ability to control your home while you are away. You can now change the temperature, lock the doors, turn off the lights, even turn on your T.V. while you are away. One security benefit of having this technology is the ability to know if anything is removed. For instance if a burglar enters your house and removes your T.V. suddenly wherever SIM can trigger a alert message on your phone, that tells you someone has unplugged your T.V. These types of messages can be programmed so well that you can receive for just about anything, for instance if your front door opens while you're away on vacation. Now imagine that you also have control over your home alarm, you can check your IP hosted camera and see who is in your house and then sound the alarm if you need to. The possibilities are endless, and the low cost involved in setting up these types of protections will allow the majority of households to set up powerful home security systems in the future.
  28. This is an example on how to use cellular connectivity for tracking. In July we sponsored a nature conservation project. This guy you can see on the picture is Pascal. He travelled from Munich to Vienna in 12 days using only his stand up paddling board. He collected donations for the conservation of the Donau and Isar region with every kilometer he paddled. You could follow his journey in real time, since he had a tracker with him, that transmitted his position via mobile network to his website every few seconds. Being on the river the whole day, it was essential for him to have a tracking solution that would also work in remote areas and across borders. Hence, choosing a SIM card that could use every network in Europe was a crucial component of his project.
  29. The social network has an artificial intelligence-powered Messenger assistant that can answer questions and complete tasks. Facebook has been dramatically expanding the role of Messenger as of late, turning it from a basic communication tool into a platform for everything from games to money transfers. Currently, the probably coolest technology at whatever mobile is the integration of Facebook Messenger into our Cloud Messaging platform. Thereby developers can easily use API’s meant for sending SMS to send a message to Facebook Messenger instead. In case there is no corresponding user on Facebook, the message is sent out as SMS. On average, this results in very low prices whilst maintaining nearly 100% coverage. This lifts combination of IoT and SMS up to the next level.
  30. Retail stores “Network of Things”. Information collected from such networks are used only by the owners and the data may be released selectively. Smart shelves in store that detect when inventory is low. Smart packaging that monitors freshness or age of perishable goods. And all that data can be fresh and useful only in real-time. Wherever SIM can be used as a fallback option in the moment when the connection is down. And retail company should not care where the store is located, because it simply will work in any possible case.
  31. Smart transportation and smart logistics. Urban traffic is the main contributor to traffic noise pollution and a major contributor to urban air quality degradation and greenhouse gas emissions. Dynamic traffic information can affect movement, allow better planning and improved scheduling. Car rentals, delivery services and logistics enterprises are investing a lot of time and energy in fleet management. But they are not yet able to track location, mileage and fuel consumption of their fleet in real-time and cross-national. Inspection, maintenance and driver’s assessment are complicated and time-consuming. Location tracking can be problematic when borders are crossed and foreign networks have to be used. Wherever SIM makes fleet management much easier. A small stick is plugged into the vehicle and delivers all relevant data via mobile network to an enterprise software. Mileage, fuel consumption and operational state of the vehicle can be monitored in real-time. This simplifies stocktaking and helps to detect damages. The advantage of multi-network SIM cards is that they have a worldwide network connection. Hence fleet management is made more economic by real-time location tracking and route optimization. At the same time the drivers are involved. Gamification makes driving more secure and energy-efficient. After every journey the driver gets an individual score for his driving style.
  32. Understanding natural intelligence is the most systematic way of developing AI. Even single-celled organisms usually “do the right thing at the right time” in order to survive. Agriculture industry. The UN predicts an increase in world population to over 11 billion by 2100. All these people will have to be fed. In addition unsustainable farming is having negative environmental impacts. Farming of the future has to be more efficient and reduce environmental pollution at the same time. Wherever SIM as the solution: Precision farming is a new farming management concept tailored to the specific conditions of every field. The immense effort of permanent caretaking is supported by new technologies, for example drones. With their micro sensors they detect water and nutrient deficits, analyse the soil conditions and the degree of ripeness of the crop. This data is transferred to the farmer’s software application and enables an resource-saving, environmental friendly farming of the land. Their infrared camera identifies pest-infested crops and weeds, so that herbicides can only be applied where actually needed. New ways of biologic pest control which are more precise and cost-effective.
  33. Smart Home Imagine that moment when washing machine communicates directly with a dryer letting it know what kind of laundry load to expect and the optimum drying program to use – saving time and energy consumption in the home. Nowadays, the remote Home Automation turns out to be more and more significant and appealing. HEAT YOUR HOME EFFICIENTLY. Smart thermostats - the actual activity in your home during the day to reduce your monthly energy usage by up to 30%, keeping you more comfortable, and offering to save you money on your utility bills. MAKE SURE THE OVEN IS OFF Smart outlets allow you to instantly turn on and off any plugged in device from across the world or just your living room. The possibilities that AI + IoT brings to the table are endless. IoT continues its run as one of the most popular technology of the year, and now the new phase of IoT is pushing everyone to ask hard questions about the data collected by all devices and sensors of IoT. We are creating new complex networks or interconnected devices right now that can share infinite amounts of information. This will be fast and uninhibited.
