M2M – enabling
digital transformation, here and now!
Dear readers, and participants of the 2016th
M2M Summit
T
his year we will be celebrating the 10th
anniversary of the
M2M Summit, the leading M2M, IoT and Industry 4.0
event. Ten years full of ideas and solutions that enable the
digital transformation of our economy and our society. For
the anniversary the special edition of the M2M Journal you hold
in the hand is more than obligatory for us. You are welcome to
browse through selected conference contributions, covering the
topics Standardization, Data Management, Automotive, Data Se-
curity and Industry 4.0. To be honest, a wide field.
And while we’re on the subject of Industry 4.0, what a marketing
blaze over the years at conferences and exhibitions! The Fourth
Industrial Revolution is gradually picking up its pace. Now, the In-
dustry 4.0 bandwagon stops at the M2M Summit. It is no longer
only about the optimization of production processes on the way to
the digital factory. Furthermore, the autonomous exchange and the
analysis of large amounts of data open up completely new business
models. There is however still so much untapped potential. What is
still lacking is a real revolution, as opposed to the evolution we’ve
seen so far.
No company on this planet can provide the necessary steps alone.
Beside standardized data communication protocols, we need ex-
perts in the field of data security and for the handling of big data.
And last but not least, we need a legal space.
For the automotive industry, the draft law of the Federal Ministry
of Transport to fully support autonomous cars has to be seen as
game-changing and – following the Federal Minister Alexander
Dobrindt – will make Germany the “lead supplier for automated
and networked vehicles”. Just another example for the necessity
and the success of a network of innovators, scientists and govern-
ment officials.
Therefore, it is not by chance that again, important representatives
from industry and politics meet at the M2M Summit this year. On
the first day of the Summit, at the Academic Day, scientists have
the floor to collaborate and present their ideas. As a new part of
the puzzle you will find an elevator pitch with many startups on the
second day of the conference.
Not least our sponsors and the fair with more than 50 exhibitors, in-
cluding eleven companies from this year’s partner country Finland,
will make this Summit an internationally unique event and makes
the anniversary very special.
I am looking forward to meeting you in Düsseldorf at the M2M
Summit to talk about the recent trends in M2M-powered solutions
for the digital transformation of our life.
In the name of the M2M Alliance board members I wish you fruit-
ful discussions, all the best and a nice stay in the beautiful city of
Düsseldorf.
Sincerely yours
Andreas Fink

and applications in industry. Automated communication be-
tween different machines generates large volumes of data
that can be used in many ways. They serve, for example, as
basis for innovative business models and tailor-made solu-
tions for customers. The right data can also help to further
optimise production processes as companies can react more
flexibly and rapidly thanks to real-time data and thus pro-
duce in a more cost-efficient and resource-friendly way.
M2M communication is characterised by enormous growth:
according to studies, the number of global M2M connections
will rise threefold in the period 2014-2019, climbing to 10.5
billion.
In order for companies to make full use of the potential of
M2M communication, a combination of reliable framework
conditions, entrepreneurial initiative and social acceptance
is needed. This year's M2M Summit sets important priorities
for the successful implementation of Industrie 4.0, with topics
including standardisation, data security and data manage-
ment.
Efficient M2M communication requires internationally har-
monised and open standards based on a reference architec-
ture model. The RAMI 4.0 model, which has been developed
by the German Industrie 4.0 Platform – a joint initiative of
government, business, trade unions and science – is being
met with high levels of interest at international level and may
serve as the basis.
We must accelerate standardisation processes so that Indus-
trie 4.0 solutions can be put into practice more quickly. Ger-
man industrial associations and standardisation organisations
have agreed on a concerted approach, which is unique world-
wide, having set up the cross-sector Standardization Council
Industrie 4.0 at the 2016 Hannover Messe. The Council de-
fines the need for new standardisation projects and organises
their international implementation in international consortia.
It closely involves further players in its work, including small
and medium-sized enterprises. One of the topics will be prac-
tical testing in test centres. The Council's work primarily aims
at finding international standardisation solutions. Germany
will therefore be placing this topic on the agenda throughout
its G20 Presidency, which will begin in December.
Message of
Greeting
Productivity is not everything, but in
the long run it is almost everything.
With these words, the US economist
Paul Krugman underlined the fact that
in the long term productivity growth is
the most important driver of economic
growth and thus of a higher standard
of living.
H
owever, in the last few years
– and even before the finan-
cial market crisis hit – pro-
ductivity growth has been
considerably weaker in many devel-
oped countries, but also in emerging
economies. This is even more astonish-
ing when we look at what have often
been rapid developments and inno-
vation in the ICT sector: high-perfor-
mance internet and smartphones have
fundamentally changed the way we live
and work. Researchers are even speak-
ing of a productivity paradox.
After the large-scale revolutions of the
past that fostered productivity, includ-
ing mechanisation, electrification and
the computerisation of industry, the
most recent, fourth revolution – namely
the digitisation of industry – is now cre-
ating fresh momentum for productivity.
Apart from the English 'Internet of
Things', the term Industrie 4.0 is com-
monly used – and not just in Germany
– to describe digitisation and network-
ing in industry.
Paving the way for Industrie 4.0 is M2M,
a technology enabling direct data com-
munication between machines, devices

automotive and on-board electronics.
Data security is another basic condition for the acceptance
and success of a data-driven economy. Without data security,
it will be very difficult to convince our small and medium-
sized enterprises that digitisation of their business is a prom-
ising strategy for the future, as SMEs are strongly affected by
cyber crime in particular.
It is the task of many players to jointly guarantee trust, se-
curity and data protection in an increasingly digitised world.
Apart from government, representatives of business and sci-
ence and of course users must each make their contributions.
In the Industrie 4.0 Platform's working group on security of
networked systems, for instance, experts from industry deal
with matters including secure communication, secure identi-
ties of value chain partners and the detection of cyber attacks
in production and their implications.
Data, however, must not only be secure, but also well man-
aged. The abundance of data is the raw material for creating
economic value and prosperity provided that the data are
analysed and used in a smart way. They offer great potential,
especially for SMEs: big data can become the driving force
for innovative business models and products. In the coming
years, global turnover in big data solutions is expected to
reach approximately 85 billion US dollars.
Big data technologies are already becoming increasingly
commonplace in many areas such as marketing and finance.
In other fields, such as industry, mobility, energy and health,
targeted stimuli are required. With the “Smart Data – Innova-
tions in Data” technology programme, the Federal Ministry
for Economic Affairs and Energy is supporting selected, pio-
neering flagship projects that are developing innovative ser-
vices in these fields in particular. This will allow us to initiate
the broad use of intelligent big data technologies at an early
stage, develop the market for smart data technologies and
help small and medium-sized enterprises especially to make
use of their big data.
The fourth industrial revolution will only be successful in the
long term if as many companies as possible, including SMEs,
are involved. The global competitivenes of German industry
largely depends on ensuring that this happens.
Let us therefore join forces with the aim of ensuring that
many more companies make use of Industrie 4.0 so that it
can provide the necessary productivity stimulus.
In this spirit, I wish the participants of the 10th
M2M Summit
2016 fruitful discussions, fresh insights and every success.
Sincerely yours,
Sigmar Gabriel,
Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, Germany

Welcome
The "secret recipe" of the prosperous future of Europe and its companies is a smart
combination of established industries, digital technologies and new business mod-
els. The M2M Summit illustrates best examples of how to make the industrial trans-
formation to the 21th
century with these ingredients. It also shows how to create
completely new business opportunities.
I
n smart manufacturing the inclusion of Industrial Internet and big data analytics into
manufactured products provides a great opportunity for companies to expand their
scope from “pure manufacturing” to taking care of the product through its whole
lifecycle. This opens possibilities for creating new product and service offerings, which
may lead to completely new business roles and models.
The smart utilities industry covers a wide range of solutions for several critical utility
infrastructure segments, such as energy production and smart grids. Utilizing big data
and IoT, the solutions typically consist of extensive sensor networks that are connected to
monitoring, optimization and automation. The data can be enriched with various exter-
nal data, such as weather, to improve the efficiency of operations.
Digitalisation of transport and vehicles is evolving rapidly right now. New innovations are
emerging within the car industry, creating needs for embedded connectivity and mobile
solutions. Moreover, the disruption of traditional automotive value chain enables smaller
and agile players to enter the market and directly deliver added value to car manufac-
turers. Digitalization of traffic infrastructure has also led to a new service paradigm in
which intelligent transport systems are seen as integrated transport services. Mobility as a
Service (MaaS) stands for buying mobility services based on consumer needs rather than
buying the means of mobility.
Mobile broadband traffic is expected to grow exponentially in the coming years, as
smartphones have overtaken laptops as the most popular device for browsing the inter-
net, accessing social media, conducting banking and shopping online. The Internet of
Everything is also expected to multiply the number of connected devices to over 30 billion
by 2020. Mobile networks will need to operate at speeds more than ten times the cur-
rent level. In the future the entire world can be connected through mobile devices. This
enables new business models and monetization opportunities for operators and service
providers.
These are just snapshots of the power of digitalization to drive economic transformation.
They are also snapshots of industries where Finland can be your trusted partner in digital
transformation.
Finnish ICT sector offers a unique opportunity to engage top talent in diverse compe-
tence areas, such as business-to-business and machine-to-machine solutions employing
wireless connectivity, imaging, algorithms, embedded software, connectivity and data
analytics. Together with the deep industry knowledge of German Mittelstand and SME´s
around Europe this talent can boost your business to new growth.
Finland is a top location for R&D activities for any digitally oriented company. According
to the Global Competitiveness Report published by the World Economic Forum, Finland
has the best availability of scientists and engineers globally, as well as one of the best
education and vocational training systems in the world. Other key factors are high levels
of employee education and competence, extensive expertise in ICT, and an efficient inno-
vation system that encourages collaboration between research institutes and companies.
Moreover, overall costs of running first class R&D activities in Finland are lower than in
most other high tech hubs.
Many international companies use Finland
as a testing ground to new technologies
and services. Advanced infrastructure, like
5G test networks, and forward looking
regulation offer unique opportunity to de-
velop internet of things and machine to
machine solutions for global markets. We
are promoting actively the EU Digital Single
Market and Finnish business and research
ecosystems are tightly integrated to value
networks around the globe.
In addition, the Finnish society is highly sup-
portive of entrepreneurship, with a flourish-
ing Silicon Valley-inspired business culture.
The number of software firms in
Finlandhasrisenby40%insixyears.
One benefactor of this trend is Startup
Sauna, the largest student-run entrepre-
neurship community in Europe. ICT start-
up entrepreneurs are also well connected
regionally, with Helsinki serving as a key
hub for startups. The annual Slush is one
of the leading start-up events of its kind in
the world. It brings together start-ups and
investors with one philosophy: to help the
next generation of great, world-conquering
companies forward.
When you want to reboot your business to
the digital world, we are happy to help!

Finland – the land that makes
digital difference
The land that makes digital difference, Fin-
land has introduced countless technologies
and digital services to the world. In fact,
Finns are renowned for creating user-driven
solutions and sought-after technologies, in
large part due to their holistic understand-
ing of digitalization and the entire digital
value chain.
A world-class cluster of machinery com-
panies such as Kone, Metso, Valmet Auto-
mation and Wärtsilä, coupled with strong
local ICT cluster with in-depth knowhow
of information technology, electronics, soft-
ware and wireless communications have
made Finland a pioneer of the Industrial
Internet. In fact, the Finnish industrial base
has a long tradition of controlling business-
critical machines and systems by connect-
ing sensors with the network-side systems.
Meet Smart IoT from Finland at
M2M Summit in Düsseldorf
To make most of the opportunities cre-
ated by digitalisation and Internet of Things
(IoT), you need the right partners. And
Finnish companies are ideal partners when
connecting physical industrial assets via IoT
networks, cloud and building smart appli-
cations and new services. We understand customer challenges and
meet them.
Finland’s achievements in connecting people and devices remain
undisputed globally and Finnish companies are internationally rec-
ognized for their expertise in creating process control and automa-
tion solutions for pulp and papermaking and chemical industries.
Finnish IoT experts deliver innovative solutions from data acquisi-
tion to analytics and visualization providing insight on products,
customers or operations enabling fact-based decision making for
effective operational development. This means rapid Return on In-
vestment through cost reductions and improved customer satisfac-
tion – delivering real competitive edge.
For companies needing to develop new technologies or suffering
from recruiting challenges, Finland is a country to be explored.
Besides the excellent research and company ecosystems, Finland
has several relevant talent pools of experienced R&D people. This
is due to the strong track record in mobile technologies through
Nokia and Microsoft. Already several companies from abroad are
making most of the opportunity.
Capitalize your Knowledge, a Growth Program run by the official
Finnish export and investment promotion agency Finpro, hosts the
Finland stand, No.1 at M2M Summit where you can meet 10 Finn-
ish IoT players showcasing practical examples of “Smart IoT from

Wireless Technologies
for a World Full of Sugar
Author: Bernd Hantsche, Marketing Director
Embedded Wireless at Rutronik Elektronische Bauelemente GmbH
As many as one in ten people in Germany suffer from diabetes mellitus, with the number
increasing all the time. While smart devices can enhance the positive care provided to
sufferers by their physicians, choosing the right wireless technology is not a piece of cake.
App stores are full of applications for dia-
betics, but even the best app is useless
without correct readings from blood glu-
cose meters, insulin pumps, blood pres-
sure monitors or bathroom scales. In this
situation, a radio link is recommendable for
transferring data.
As it is natural for patients to replace meas-
uring instruments from time to time, pro-
prietary radio transmission techniques only
provide a solution with a short-term per-
spective. Standardized profiles ensure com-
patibility between various manufacturers, a
future-proof solution and greater flexibility.
Near Field Communication technology is integrated in most smartphones. It stands out due
to its user friendliness and encrypted data communication over a very small range. The lat-
ter is, however, a disadvantage for medical measuring instruments, as it means diabetics
need to place their handsets right next to scales, for instance, if they wish to transfer data.
Instruments can use mobile wireless communication to upload measured values to the In-
ternet automatically and without a local gateway. A further interesting feature is the transfer
of a safety key via text message. This method is considered particularly secure as the en-
cryption key is routed via a different network path. However, the amount of effort involved
needs to be weighed up against other priorities: A contract with a wireless network operator
results in running costs and the required transceiver is much more expensive than with NFC
solutions. If the end devices are exported, certification management is more complex and,
depending on the mobile wireless module, very expensive.
From a long-term perspective, only LTE offers the chance of ensuring this additional effort
is worthwhile, because several countries will soon discontinue using the second or the third
generation wireless technologies.
A further obstacle is regulatory compliance certification with country-specific limits for ra-
diation exposure in terms of frequency allocation, transmitting power, and service life,
as well as provider-dependent certification. Established manufacturers such as Telit offer
relevant certificates for almost all wireless modules and service providers worldwide. With
lesser-known, usually Asian manufacturers,
it is wise to find out as much as possible
before investing time in the development.
Wireless communication is still the best
choice with regard to mobility and inde-
pendence. The new, small LTE categories 1
or M are tailor made for such IoT applica-
tions where only a small amount of data
needs to be transferred every few hours.
Ever cheaper hardware with lower energy
consumption is now widely available.
The traditional Bluetooth protocol only
provides the SPP (Serial Port Profile) for
communication. Since there are no spe-
cific standards for the various types of data
above the SPP stack and Bluetooth requires
a high level of energy to function, a – tech-
nologically independent – low-power suc-
cessor has already been developed: Blue-
tooth Low Energy (BLE).
While Bluetooth splits the 2.4GHz ISM
band into 79 x 1MHz channels using a ran-
dom hopping pattern, BLE utilizes a dou-
ble channel bandwidth of 2MHz and only
changes the frequency when required to do
so. Even the software layers have a differ-
ent design: Bluetooth has very few strictly-
defined application profiles above the host
controller interface (HCI); in contrast, BLE
offers numerous specified application pro-
files and services above the GAP/GATT lay-
ers, thus enabling customized profiles. The
bit stream can therefore be adapted and
optimized to the respective application.
In practice, instrument manufacturers
would need to provide a corresponding
app for the most common smartphone op-
erating systems and run a BLE service in the

background. Any changes to the operating system would result in
the software having to be checked and eventually corrected. But
even BLE is not a satisfactory answer in the long term, as interoper-
ability with other medical gadgets is not usually possible.
WiFimay be an interesting alternative for applications used in
homes where a robust WiFi network transmits the data securely to
a database server. The protocols are generally standards such as
TCP, UDP, IPv4, IPv6, HTTP or FTP. On the down side, the required
WiFi hardware is more expensive than BLE hardware and uses sig-
nificantly more energy.
In contrast to BLE, the ANT protocol offers:
XX Reduced power consumption
XX Similar low hardware costs
XX Much lower costs for membership and product listing
XX Significantly more flexible network topology which allows a
total of 64,000 wireless subscribers to be integrated into one
ANT network
ANT is supported by most smartphones and is highly individual in
terms of its use. Standardized application profiles can be found
above the protocol under “ANT+”. Numerous specified data pack-
ages are available for individual measured values, particularly
across the fields of healthcare and sport.
Perfect Combinations
Quite often it is the combination of wireless interfaces that allow
ideal use of different product functions. A number of these are al-
ready available as a combined package. Thanks to 35 wireless
suppliers, Rutronik has the right solution for every application, and
the experts at the Rutronik Wireless Competence Center offer ex-
pert advice and knowledge. This level of market transparency saves
both time and money during the preselection stage, and we draw
on the expertise gained from a wide range of projects to ensure
common and serious mistakes are avoided.

... The Internet of Things has
proven the potential to disrupt
markets and make this world better.
Many leading companies have
innovative IOT concepts but are challenged when it comes
to making them reality. Great ideas are stuck in powerpoint
presentations and innovation pipelines.
Using rapid prototyping you ideas can be made reality in a
matter of weeks. Prototypes help communicate the story of your
product or service and serve as proof of concept for your idea -
better than any slide deck. They help you make better decisions,
develop better products faster and reduce market risks. We
believe in an iterative approach to product development where
failing fast means failing cheap - and learning quickly.
