Using the University Library
In previous courses, you used the Internet to research information about different topics. In this course, you may still use the Internet sparingly, but the University Library provides a wider variety of resources that are more appropriate for formal research papers.
The University Library includes the following resources:
· Databases. These databases contain magazine articles, journal articles, newspaper articles, audio clips, and other types of multimedia, statistics, articles with opposing viewpoints, and much more. You can search through the databases by specialization, subject, author, title, publication, and so forth.
· Research resources. Besides the databases, the library also contains access to books, dissertations, theses, research in Spanish, Canadian information, country profiles and economic data, encyclopedias and dictionaries, and journal indexes and abstracts.
· Writing and test-taking resources. The library also provides guides for preparing for and taking different kinds of tests, improving writing and grammar, and so on.
· Help. The library contains links to a Frequently Asked Questions page, timely feedback from a librarian, a research tutorial, and a library handbook.
As you search for sources, you may receive thousands of results for a topic in the University Library. If that happens, you may have to narrow your topic, or you may need to enter more specific information in the search engine. and discussions. The purpose of this paper is to help you synthesize and analyze different ideas

recommend using the EBSCO host search for the Communication & Mass Media Complete
database through the Cline’s website. After reading your independently selected articles, you will
write a 4-5 page paper.
• You may want to begin your search by consulting the following journals: Journal of
International & Intercultural Communication; Communication and Critical/Cultural
Studies; Communication, Culture & Critique
Start by offering a clear definition of the concept under discussion as defined by the authors’ of
the articles you have selected. This is your chance to move beyond using a dictionary for
definition, look at the course reading and academic journal articles and see how the author define
the concept. They may not spell it out completely, you may have to read between the lines and
paraphrase their definition.
You will be graded on your engagement of the material and your grasp of the concept discussed
in class. Use the same process that you have been practicing in the collaborative reading
assignments. How do the three articles discuss the same concept: do they agree with each other,
do they approach the concepts differently (disagree with each), does one of the articles
complicate or expand the discussion of the concept? These are all elements that can be addressed
in this paper.
Draw on the readings in a thoughtful, meaningful manner. Use direct quotes sparingly, a quote
should be used to support what conclusion you draw, not replace your own voice. This is not
about your opinion but building an argument. Provide academic evidence to support your point.
As such, this paper should be written in third person rather than using “I” or “we”. Be sure to

Writing effective internal company memos is an acquired skill that frequently distinguishes the great manager inside a company. Senior executives usually take notice of lower level managers who precisely communicate issues in written form.
The key to effective internal memos is that they communicate much in a small amount of space. A cardinal rule of great memo writing is this: All important information must appear on the first page.
The following provides one way to organize an internal memo. This format is particularly applicable towards a memo that communicates the results of some project or investigation that has been assigned to the writer.

Introduction
Two or three sentences that orient your reader about why you are writing to him or her. Your boss may not remember why he or she assigned you this project. The Introduction should inform the reader about specific background information regarding the project you are writing about (for example, who, what, when, where, why). In most analytical memos, your tone should be unemotional and objective. Avoid putting your conclusions or key points in this section--those things go in the next section.
Summary
This is where you place your key points for a busy executive that only has three minutes to read it. Key points are usually best communicated by listing them in “bullets” as single sentences, avoiding lengthy and wordy paragraphs. Your key points must all fit on the first page.
In an analytical memo your key points might consist of:

database through the Cline’s website. After reading your independently selected articles, you will
write a 4-5 page paper.
• You may want to begin your search by consulting the following journals: Journal of
International & Intercultural Communication; Communication and Critical/Cultural
Studies; Communication, Culture & Critique
Start by offering a clear definition of the concept under discussion as defined by the authors’ of
the articles you have selected. This is your chance to move beyond using a dictionary for
definition, look at the course reading and academic journal articles and see how the author define
the concept. They may not spell it out completely, you may have to read between the lines and
paraphrase their definition.
You will be graded on your engagement of the material and your grasp of the concept discussed
in class. Use the same process that you have been practicing in the collaborative reading
assignments. How do the three articles discuss the same concept: do they agree with each other,
do they approach the concepts differently (disagree with each), does one of the articles
complicate or expand the discussion of the concept? These are all elements that can be addressed
in this paper.
Draw on the readings in a thoughtful, meaningful manner. Use direct quotes sparingly, a quote
should be used to support what conclusion you draw, not replace your own voice. This is not
about your opinion but building an argument. Provide academic evidence to support your point.
As such, this paper should be written in third person rather than using “I” or “we”. Be sure to

Writing effective internal company memos is an acquired skill that frequently distinguishes the great manager inside a company. Senior executives usually take notice of lower level managers who precisely communicate issues in written form.
The key to effective internal memos is that they communicate much in a small amount of space. A cardinal rule of great memo writing is this: All important information must appear on the first page.
The following provides one way to organize an internal memo. This format is particularly applicable towards a memo that communicates the results of some project or investigation that has been assigned to the writer.

Introduction

Summary
This is where you place your key points for a busy executive that only has three minutes to read it. Key points are usually best communicated by listing them in “bullets” as single sentences, avoiding lengthy and wordy paragraphs. Your key points must all fit on the first page.
In an analytical memo your key points might consist of:

For this assignment, you will first conduct your own research on the effects of social media on societal norms (Part 1), then you will examine what has been found through previous research conducted by others (Part 2).
Part 1:
Compare and contrast the attitudes of two cohorts of people; one that consists of five people that rarely use social media and one cohort of five people that uses social media 2 or more hours a day.
Create a list of five people that you know that use social media at least 2 or more hours per day. This group of people will make up your first cohort. Then create a list of five people that you know that either do not use social media or use it very rarely. Take into account age when creating the cohorts, and try to keep the ages as similar as possible between the cohorts. Keeping a certain level of consistency in the two cohorts will help to negate the potential effects of generational differences. Provide a brief description of each of the ten people you are going to interview divided into their respective cohorts.
In other words, list the five people in the social media at least 2 or more hours a day, and provide a brief description of each along with why you chose them. Then provide a list of the five people that rarely or never use social media, and provide a brief description of each along with why you chose them.
Interview the participants to learn the similarities and differences between the two cohorts as it relates to attitudes, lifestyles, and relationships. Write a two-page paper comparing and contrasting what you learned about the two cohorts. Be sure to relate your findings to cultivation theory and socialization theory in the paper.
Part 2:
Now you will compare your research with research findings through previous research conducted by others. Look up at least 3 articles in the Rasmussen Library that relate to the topic of social media and its impact on society. You are not limited to articles that are strictly written on the specific topic of social media and norms. Articles that are covering social media and society are available from a wide number of angles. It’s easier to overhaul your outline than it is to overhaul a fully written paper, so spend some time thinking about the structure
- 3. of your paper before you launch into the writing. Your paper should have: A clear introduction A body (in which you flesh out your analysis of rhetoric, audience, artifact, and context) A conclusion (in which you summarize your argument and findings and “open” the paper to consideration of broader themes). WRITING YOUR PAPER A few words about WRITING your paper: I require an “introductory paragraph.” It must introduce the topic, state the main argument of the paper, set forth the plan by which the paper unfolds, and state the paper’s conclusion. In brief, after having read the first paragraph, your reader should know precisely what the paper is about, its main claims, how it unfolds, and where it will
- 4. end up. Write the paper in coherent paragraphs. Each paragraph should flow naturally and logically from the previous paragraph, and on to the next paragraph, following a clear train of analysis. Good writing is clear writing. Write in simple, declarative sentences. Use the active voice. Feel free to quote from books, articles or experts, but do not waste space with very lengthy quotations – briefly paraphrase these passages instead. A few words about acknowledging and citing sources: Every time you use somebody else’s ideas or words, you must acknowledge the source of the information (unless the information is common knowledge). You may acknowledge these sources by using footnotes, endnotes, or in-text notes. Don’t get hung up on details of citation style: what really matters is (1) that you cite your sources in such a way that readers can identify your sources and check your facts, and (2) that you
- 5. use the same citation style throughout the paper. (When citing Internet sources that do not have printed equivalents, identify the author, document title, Internet address, and the date that you retrieved the document.) Append a bibliography at the end of the paper, and include all the sources in APA style that you used in writing the paper. Review the student handbook for plagiarism statement and requirements. SUBMITTING YOUR PAPER When you have completed your paper, re-read it for clarity, grammar, spelling and A few words about submitting your paper: Your paper must be typed in Word Document in double-space in a normal font (e.g., 12-point Times New Roman), number the pages, put your name and student number on the title page. Your research paper should have a title other than “ Research Paper”.

Submit your paper through Turnitin dropbox (instructions posted online) The paper is due on the date posted in your syllabus. No late submissions will be accepted.
