Columbia was first settled by Europeans and was later renamed and made the seat of Boone County in 1821. In the past, it served as an outfitting station for emigrants, but now its major industries are insurance and medicine. While it once relied on horses and old cars for transportation, Columbia residents now use modern transportation like cars and have attractions such as the Martin Luther King Memorial Garden and the Katy Trail rail conversion.
