Collective intelligence2
1. Collective Intelligence
“achieved when a mass of participation is reached”
– Ellysa Kroski, internet technology information consultant, Columbia University
2. “result in decisions that are often better
than could have been made by any single
member of the group”
“can only do as well as it’s smartest
member”
- James Surowiecki, author and journalist
3.
4. SOCIAL NETWORKS
We define social network sites as web-
based services that allow individuals to:
(1) construct a public or semi-public
profile within a bounded system,
(2) articulate a list of other users with
whom they share a connection, and
(3) view and traverse their list of
connections and those made by others
within the system. The nature and
nomenclature of these connections may
vary from site to site.

12. “These strategies are based
in finding the individual
needs of each person and
try to satisfy them. This
could be the kind of
marketing that EBay uses,
because even if its service is
the same, the products that
they provide are totally
personalised.”VS
Editor's Notes
Blog is an abbreviation for ‘weblog’ which maintain ongoing information usually focusing on a particular topic. The main features of a blog are:
a diary type commentary
links to other websites
and
presented as a list of articles.
Being one of the most effective means of Internet Based Communication blogs have been round since the 1990s, they used to be used as chronicles and diaries but today they are generally used to communicate about different topics. They are usually maintained by an individual with regular entries displayed in reverse chronological order.
Blogs are easy to post and easy to find. People interact and give their comments. You can tag a post as having a certain ‘keyword’ in which then relates to other people posting or reading those blogs. ‘It’s like automatically adding a search engine to your website.’ but
If there is a problem with the software that the developers do not realize anyone who discovers it beforehand and compromise it. You also have to deal with people spamming on your blogs giving you negative feedback occasionally.
Wikipedia is a perfect example of harnessing collective intelligence
It is an online encyclopedia that is fully open source
That means anyone with internet access can go onto the wikipedia and write a new article or edit a preiviously created article
Wikipedia therefore is a world wide operation that can is available to all forms of people in over 35 different languages
Pros
Vast amount of information (wikipedia has over 16.4 million articles of information)
Because of so many articles wikipedia can cover almost any topic that comes to a persons imagination
Vast amount of people editing the information which means its constantly kept up to date
Cons
The biggest problem with wikipedia is the fact that it is open
People can come and edit any article they wish or create a new article
And while this may mean a lot of information it doesn’t necessarily mean correct information
So this leads to information that isn’t always true
And because wikipedia can be edited by almost every1 sum times articles you find there don’t really make sense sometimes
