HP sustainability
HP is focused on social and environmental responsibility through their operations and supply chain. Their priorities include energy efficiency, reducing environmental impact, and raising standards in their supply chain. They have implemented numerous programs to reduce waste and emissions, make their products and packaging more sustainable, and work with suppliers on social and environmental issues. Their goal is to reduce CO2 emissions by 15% by 2010 and have recycled over 920 million pounds of electronics since 1987.
Big Green Challenge | Andrew Morton
The Big Green Challenge is a two-year program with three stages: Stage 1 deadline is February 29, 2008 for initial submissions. Stage 2 invites up to 100 groups to submit detailed plans. Stage 3 has up to 10 finalists implement their ideas from October 2008, receiving advice and up to £20k each. To qualify, ideas must achieve carbon savings through innovation, demonstrate sustained community commitment for durable impact, and be replicable at scale.
Designing plastics circulation
Presently most electrical/electronic equipment (EEE) is not designed for recycling, let alone for circulation. Plastics in these products account for 20% of material use, and through better design, significant environmental and financial savings could be gained.
Technological solutions and circular design opportunities already exist, but they haven’t been implemented yet.
Some challenges, such as ease of disassembly, could be resolved through better communication and by sharing learnings across the value chain.
Instead of WEEE, we should focus on developing CEEE: Circular Electrical and Electronic Equipment.
The case examples of this report show how different stages of the lifecycle can be designed so that plastics circulation becomes possible and makes business sense.

HKBU POLS 7050 Environmental levy Scheme on plastic shopping bag
Hong Kong produces millions of tons of solid waste each year, including billions of plastic shopping bags. Plastic bags are not biodegradable and occupy landfill space. The government implemented an environmental levy scheme on plastic shopping bags in 2009 to encourage reuse and reduce plastic bag usage. The scheme charges retailers 50 cents for each plastic bag distributed, which they must record and remit quarterly to the government. It was later expanded in 2011 to include small and medium retailers. The levy scheme successfully created an economic incentive for consumers to switch to reusable bags and reduced plastic bag usage.

Monitor indicators of genetic diversity from space using Earth Observation data
Genetic diversity within and among populations is essential for species persistence. While targets and indicators for genetic diversity are captured in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, assessing genetic diversity across many species at national and regional scales remains challenging. Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) need accessible tools for reliable and efficient monitoring at relevant scales. Here, we describe how Earth Observation satellites (EO) make essential contributions to enable, accelerate, and improve genetic diversity monitoring and preservation. Specifically, we introduce a workflow integrating EO into existing genetic diversity monitoring strategies and present a set of examples where EO data is or can be integrated to improve assessment, monitoring, and conservation. We describe how available EO data can be integrated in innovative ways to support calculation of the genetic diversity indicators of the GBF monitoring framework and to inform management and monitoring decisions, especially in areas with limited research infrastructure or access. We also describe novel, integrative approaches to improve the indicators that can be implemented with the coming generation of EO data, and new capabilities that will provide unprecedented detail to characterize the changes to Earth’s surface and their implications for biodiversity, on a global scale.

Formulation of aramang baked products enriched with malunggay
The modification of an existing product or the formulation of a new product to fill a newly identified market niche or customer need are both examples of product development. This study generally developed and conducted the formulation of aramang baked products enriched with malunggay conducted by the researchers. Specifically, it answered the acceptability level in terms of taste, texture, flavor, odor, and color also the overall acceptability of enriched aramang baked products. The study used the frequency distribution for evaluators to determine the acceptability of enriched aramang baked products enriched with malunggay. As per sensory evaluation conducted by the researchers, it was proven that aramang baked products enriched with malunggay was acceptable in terms of Odor, Taste, Flavor, Color, and Texture. Based on the results of sensory evaluation of enriched aramang baked products proven that three (3) treatments were all highly acceptable in terms of variable Odor, Taste, Flavor, Color and Textures conducted by the researchers.
