The term Lean has become widely popular, particularly with the word “startup” attached to it. This has led many people to believe this is an approach to work relevant only to new companies or initiatives. Lean-curious companies who have tried to implement these ideals often stall at one or two teams citing organizational complexities, politics and dependencies as insurmountable obstacles to Lean Startup at scale.
Can Lean Startup practices be scaled — not just as culture and philosophy but as tactical process? In this practical presentation, Jeff will share several methods for scaling Lean Startup techniques in large organizations exemplified in detailed case studies and professional experience. Jeff will cover knowledge management, intra-team dependencies, infrastructure requirements and several other elements of ensuring successful Lean Startup practices in companies of any size.
This is supposed to be an introductory presentation on Agile.
In this presentation I give some examples of heavy weight methods and their implications on your project. Then I give a quick overview of Agile methods, the rationale behind it, its origin, its values and principles. I move on to describe that what I see happening today in the industry is really waterfall in the name of Agile. I give some reasons why this is happening and then I give some pointers to move away from this flawed thinking.
Bottom line, Agile is not a Silver Bullet and don't fall pray to marketing gimmicks. Question dogmatic claims. Adapt Agile to your needs and take baby steps.

Marketplace Lending / Fintech (Series: BUSINESS BORROWING BASICS 2018)Financial Poise
The emergence of the internet completely revolutionized the lending landscape. Innovative financial technology is changing the way businesses borrow and lenders loan money, offering the promise of increased convenience and access to financial services. One such innovation is the emergency of “marketplace lending,” sometimes referred to as “peer-to-peer” or “platform” lending. Lenders who occupy this space are typically online non-bank financial companies that built technology platforms and online marketing strategies to match borrowers and lenders. The platforms connect businesses who seek to borrow money with investors willing to buy or invest in the loan. In my most cases, once a loan is made, the platform collects principal and interest payments and makes payments, less fees that the platform keeps, to investors. This webinar discusses marketplace lending from a macro perspective, including the regulatory regime that governs the space. It compares marketplace lending with other forms of lending. And it explores some of the pros and cons of borrowing from a marketplace lender.

Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.
"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.

PHP Frameworks: I want to break free (IPC Berlin 2024)Ralf Eggert
In this presentation, we examine the challenges and limitations of relying too heavily on PHP frameworks in web development. We discuss the history of PHP and its frameworks to understand how this dependence has evolved. The focus will be on providing concrete tips and strategies to reduce reliance on these frameworks, based on real-world examples and practical considerations. The goal is to equip developers with the skills and knowledge to create more flexible and future-proof web applications. We'll explore the importance of maintaining autonomy in a rapidly changing tech landscape and how to make informed decisions in PHP development.
This talk is aimed at encouraging a more independent approach to using PHP frameworks, moving towards a more flexible and future-proof approach to PHP development.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.
Connector Corner: Automate dynamic content and events by pushing a buttonDianaGray10
Here is something new! In our next Connector Corner webinar, we will demonstrate how you can use a single workflow to:
Create a campaign using Mailchimp with merge tags/fields
Send an interactive Slack channel message (using buttons)
Have the message received by managers and peers along with a test email for review
But there’s more:
In a second workflow supporting the same use case, you’ll see:
Your campaign sent to target colleagues for approval
If the “Approve” button is clicked, a Jira/Zendesk ticket is created for the marketing design team
But—if the “Reject” button is pushed, colleagues will be alerted via Slack message
Join us to learn more about this new, human-in-the-loop capability, brought to you by Integration Service connectors.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Product or project?A really smart product manager I worked with described the PM as the product CEO, swiss army knife, and duct tape.Develop deep customer understanding-Smallest of small businesses, with 0-2 employees, and often they don’t even consider themselves small biz-Tend to be service-based businesses, say tech support consultant or even a lawnmower.Identify biggest customer problem(s)-For these people, one of the first biz tasks they face is invoicing. -(walk through invoicing scenario)-And the result of this problem is that it takes a lot of time to manage, and can delay when they get paidKeep an eye towards business opportunity-As a product manager, I have an end goal of creating a successful product. This means solving a real problem for the customer and creating growth for intuit.-At this point in the process I don’t believe it’s necessary (or often wise) to try to know exactly how the product will contribute to the business, but it’s something that I should have some hypotheses about-With billing manager, and couple ideas we had were payments and migrationCreate product vision that team will rally behind-So with these insights the next thing I need to do is create a short list of what a solution would need to contain in order to be great for customers. -This is actually a challenge because sometimes you have to throw out some ‘sacred cows’ that are considered as obvious must haves by others (even by your customers).-At the beginning of Billing Manager, the PM may have said “We need to create an easy, inexpensive way for these tiny invoicers to manage their invoices and help them get paid faster”. -Would have gone into more detail about what it will contain (new user can create first invoice in <5 mins, navigation structure is based on invoice status, -And what it won’t contain (user can’t customize their invoice, doesn’t solve for more sophisticated invoicing such as quotes, doesn’t handle any accounting – just tells you how much you’re owed).Lead team to solve biggest problems-Work with all cross functional team members, designers, developers, Q&A, marketing, research, support, etc. to bring the product to life. Measure results and iterate-With a new product you are only predicting user behavior until you get the product or new features out users. -Continue speaking with customers-Look at usage data-Stay in tuned with the market-and adjust accordingly!
