Coffee : Behind the success
story- Can coffee
production still be
sustainable in times of
climate change and price
crisis?
Shedding the light on the distribution of value
Observation :
The growing inequalities in the
distribution of value coffee chains is
poorly documented and costed.
Shedding the light on the distribution of value
Inequalities matter
Inequalities keep people in a poverty trap
and prevent the achievement of SDGs.
Inequalities and poverty also prevent
adaptation to climate change.
The value created along the coffee chain
needs to be more fairly shared !
Shedding the light on the distribution of value
Opacity allows prices that do not
garantee decent living income for
producers.
We need to consider such low prices
as a market failure.
Shedding the light on the distribution of value
We need to make visible these
inequalities in order to address them.
Transparency will trigger other kind
of discussions between the various
stakeholders of the coffee sector :
balanced negotiations, fairer trade
and climate adaptation investments !
Shedding the light on the distribution of value
Our proposal :
The establishment of a lasting Economic
Observatory of Costs and Margins, within
the International Coffee Organization
(ICO)
Shedding the light on the distribution of value
Functioning of the Observatory :
It should gather publicly available data on the
costs of production and margins along the
coffee chain.
The data could then be checked confidentially
with various actors along the chain.
Shedding the light on the distribution of value
Goal of the Observatory :
It should publish each year, figures referring
to the evolution of the repartition of the value
between the actors of different producing
and consuming countries.
The aim is to generate transparent data to
facilitate dialogue between actors.
Shedding the light on the distribution of value
Our demand to the EU:
Push for the creation, within the ICO, of
such an Economic Observatory of Costs
and Margins as a lever for more
transparency in the coffee value chain and a
way to contribute to the achievement of
SDGs.
