Coco Chanel was born in 1883 in France and grew up in poverty. She was sent to an orphanage after her mother died and father abandoned the family. The nuns at the orphanage taught her how to sew. During World War 1, Chanel started her first millinery business with the help of a man named Etienne Balson. This helped launch her career in fashion. She went on to open hat and clothing stores. Chanel was inspired by the nuns' sewing and a Jean Antoine Watteau painting to create women's suits. Her style influenced fashion around the world and she made fashion more diverse. To this day, her techniques continue to inspire fashion designers.
