Coaching is a relatively new methodology used by many organizations to help employees reach their full potential. It involves a powerful dialogue between a coach and coachee to uncover effective solutions to challenges. Coaches act as equal partners who believe clients have the resources and creativity within themselves to succeed. Coaching differs from training, mentoring, consulting, therapy and sports coaching in that the coach and coachee are equals. For coaching to be effective, the coachee must be willing to take responsibility for finding solutions while looking ahead instead of back. Multiple sessions over several weeks usually yield the best results.

COACHING TAKES YOU FROM “HOW TO WOW”
You aspire to achieve specific goals and fulfil your dreams. But working towards goal is not that easy, as you may encounter several how, where, why, when, whom, which etc. questions en-route to success. The inspiration to find solution of these hurdles, odds and rough patches are available through Coaching. The down times can get really down and dishearten you.
Setbacks and disappointments are an integral part of life and there is no escaping them. While you cannot change your circumstances or bypass the hurdles, you can brace yourself up against the difficult times by maintaining a positive & constructive frame of mind and then determine to keep you going against all odds.
When the going gets tough and you are overwhelmed by the rough times, all you need is Coaching to encourage and keep you going. The showcase to inspire the winner in you will do, by unchaining your real potential. Coaching stimuli will lift up your spirits, make you feel high-n-confident and put you back on right action track.
In coming years, we are likely to experience
an increased demand for
professional coaching as more people
and employers become aware of
the fact that performance gaps may
not necessarily be addressed through
more training

3. What is Coaching
Coaching is a powerful, results-oriented dialogue between the
Coach and Coachee.
This dialogue potentially helps the coachee uncover quickly-This dialogue potentially helps the coachee uncover quickly-
effective new perspectives and solutions to dilemmas/ situations
that were not so clear/ obvious before
The International Coach Federation (ICF) defines coaching:
“Partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to
maximize their personal and professional potential, which is particularly important in today’s
uncertain and complex environment. Coaches honor the client as the expert in his or her life and
work and believe every client is creative, resourceful and whole.”
Krishna Setlur
4. What Coaching is NOT!!
Training: A trainer teaches skills or imparts knowledge in general to the audience
who is in ignorance of it. A Coach is an EQUAL !!
Mentoring: A Mentor offers his knowledge/ wisdom and experience to a less
experience Menetee. A Coach is an EQUAL !!
Consulting: A Consultant offers advice based on his superior knowledge/ experience.
A Coach is an EQUAL !!
Counseling/ Therapy: A Counselor/ Therapist typically offers help to a person in a
state of emotional/ psychological disturbance. A Coach is an EQUAL !!
Sports Coaching: A sports coach (cricket, tennis, baseball, etc) imparts knowledge
and advice on specific techniques. A Coach is an EQUAL !!
YES- A COACH & COACHEE ARE EQUAL PARTNERS IN PROGRESS !!
Krishna Setlur
5. Coaching: Characteristics
Looks ahead- solutions oriented- energising. Avoids looking back.
A coaching conversation is strictly confidential between the Coach
and Coachee
Coach and Coachee share an equal partnership
both are equally responsible for the process- a coach can only guarantee a ‘coaching
presence’
A coach alone cannot guarantee results, since the coachee is also equally responsible
Has international bodies that define standards and offer credentials
for coaches, based on
ethical principles
stringent education & experience predicated on coach specific competencies
supervised coaching practice
Krishna Setlur
6. Coaching: Pre-suppositions
Coaching pre-supposes that
A coachee is a fully functioning individual whoA coachee is a fully functioning individual who
Actively seeks solutions to his / her dilemmas / problems
Is keen to move ahead
Is accountable and responsible
is creative, resourceful and whole

8. How to select a good coach
It’s a bit like selecting any good doctor or lawyer!
Credentials/ qualifications are, of course, the basic requirement:
In coaching an ICF* Credential is among the best!
A healthy overall experience of the coach, good references, and
reputation could make the difference
Also check if you and your potential coach have a good wavelength
match
And don’t forget the Good Ol’ Gut!!

9. Coaching: Making it effective
Works best when Coachee understands well what a coaching
conversation is all about. Tip: Seek clarity on this if needed from the Coach/ your sponsor/
HR before a coaching conversation begins
Usually a coaching conversation lasts anywhere from 20 min to 60
minutes.
Experience shows that it is takes about 3 ~ 6 conversations-Experience shows that it is takes about 3 ~ 6 conversations-
sometimes even 10 to effectively move ahead meaningfully
Each coaching conversation normally results in an action plan – so a
gap of a 1 to 4 weeks between two conversation helps to effectively
action the points
Coachee has identified clear areas to focus on for each of the
conversations. Tip: In case this is not clear, you might use the initial parts of the conversation to
get this clarity
