Believing Cassandra: Our Big-Data Journey To Enlightenment under the Cassandra Paradigm
It turns out that much can be learned about Cassandra in a year's time, given a high enough pain tolerance on the part of an organization's founders. Join us as we at Timeli.io step you through exactly what happened when we walked into an in-production time series implementation that somehow could not return data in a time series format to its existing customers. We will then discuss how we then re-worked that same implementation to be fully functional, and how we started on the road to finding the keys to Cassandra's legendary performance capabilities in a Zookeeper/AMQP/SQL/Tomcat stack. The path for this journey left no block unstumbled, so if your organization still has toes that are left unbruised this talk could well save you pain.
Creating a Provincial Wide Consolidated Cutblocks Layer using FMESafe Software
This presentation outlines the process of creating a province-wide cutblocks dataset using FME. In order to create a consolidated cutblocks dataset, data must be retrieved and merged from several different databases and geodatabases. Previous versions of the consolidated cutblocks layer were produced annually using python scripts. These datasets have been found to overestimate the size of individual cutblocks by merging the geometries of equivalent cutblocks from different datasets. To resolve this issue, FME was used to recreate a script which is more modular and easy to adjust than the python version. Throughout the process, lessons were learned about optimizing performance and avoiding memory issues while working with large provincial datasets.

Comparative genome analysis requires high quality annotations of all genomic elements. Today’s sequencing projects face numerous challenges including lower coverage, more frequent assembly errors, and the lack of closely related species with well-annotated genomes. Precise elucidation of the many different biological features encoded in any genome requires careful examination and review. We need genome annotation editing tools to modify and refine the location and structure of the genome elements that predictive algorithms cannot yet resolve automatically. During the manual annotation process, curators identify elements that best represent the underlying biology and eliminate elements that reflect systemic errors of automated analyses.
Apollo is a web-based application that supports and enables collaborative genome curation in real time, analogous to Google Docs, allowing teams of curators to improve on existing automated gene models through an intuitive interface. Researchers from nearly one hundred institutions worldwide are currently using Apollo for distributed curation efforts in over sixty genome projects across the tree of life: from plants to arthropods, to fungi, to species of fish and other vertebrates including human, cattle (bovine), and dog.

Explaining Online Reinforcement Learning Decisions of Self-Adaptive SystemsAndreas Metzger
Design time uncertainty poses an important challenge when developing the self-adaptation logic of a self-adaptive system. To define when the system should adapt, all potential environment states need to be anticipated, which is infeasible in most cases due to incomplete information at design time. Defining how the system should adapt when facing a new environment state, requires understanding the precise effect of an adaptation, which may not be known at design time. Online reinforcement learning, i.e., employing reinforcement learning (RL) at runtime, is an emerging approach to realizing self-adaptive systems in the presence of design time uncertainty. Using Online RL, the self-adaptive system can learn from actual operational data and leverage information only available at runtime. Recently Deep RL is gaining interest, in which learned knowledge is represented as a neural network. Deep RL can generalize well over unseen inputs, as well as handle continuous environment states and adaptation actions. A fundamental problem of Deep RL is that learned knowledge is not explicitly represented. For a human, it is practically impossible to relate the parametrization of the underlying neural network to concrete RL decisions and thus Deep RL essentially appears as a black box. Yet, understanding the decisions made by Deep RL is key to (1) increasing trust in these systems, and (2) facilitating their debugging. Facilitating the debugging of Deep RL for self-adaptive systems is especially relevant because Online RL does not completely eliminate manual engineering effort. As self-adaptive systems do not have an inherent reward signal, the reward function must be explicitly defined, which introduces a potential source for human error. To address the challenge of how to explain Deep RL systems for self-adaptive systems we enhance and combine two existing explainable RL techniques from the AI literature. The combined technique, XRL-DINE, overcomes the respective limitations of the individual techniques. We present a proof-of-concept implementation of XRL-DINE, as well as qualitative and quantitative results of applying XRL-DINE to the self-adaptive system exemplar SWIM -- a self-adaptive web application.
Formal methods help improve the quality and reliability of software by providing proof of correctness. However, ensuring the correctness of verification tools that apply these formal methods, is itself a much harder problem. A typical way to justify the correctness is to provide soundness proofs based on semantic models. For program verifiers these soundness proofs are quite large and complex. In this thesis, we introduce certified reasoning to provide machine checked proofs of various components of an automated verification system. We develop new certified decision procedures (Omega++) and certified proofs (for compatible sharing) and integrate with an existing automated verification system (HIP/SLEEK). We show that certified reasoning improves the correctness and expressivity of automated verification without sacrificing on performance.

"DiRAC is the integrated supercomputing facility for theoretical modeling and HPC-based research in particle physics, and astrophysics, cosmology, and nuclear physics, all areas in which the UK is world-leading. DiRAC provides a variety of compute resources, matching machine architecture to the algorithm design and requirements of the research problems to be solved. As a single federated Facility, DiRAC allows more effective and efficient use of computing resources, supporting the delivery of the science programs across the STFC research communities. It provides a common training and consultation framework and, crucially, provides critical mass and a coordinating structure for both small- and large-scale cross-discipline science projects, the technical support needed to run and develop a distributed HPC service, and a pool of expertise to support knowledge transfer and industrial partnership projects. The on-going development and sharing of best-practice for the delivery of productive, national HPC services with DiRAC enables STFC researchers to produce world-leading science across the entire STFC science theory program."

Enabling Insight to Support World-Class Supercomputing (Stefan Ceballos, Oak ...confluent
The Oak Ridge Leadership Facility (OLCF) in the National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) houses world-class high-performance computing (HPC) resources and has a history of operating top-ranked supercomputers on the TOP500 list, including the world's current fastest, Summit, an IBM AC922 machine with a peak of 200 petaFLOPS. With the exascale era rapidly approaching, the need for a robust and scalable big data platform for operations data is more important than ever. In the past when a new HPC resource was added to the facility, pipelines from data sources spanned multiple data sinks which oftentimes resulted in data silos, slow operational data onboarding, and non-scalable data pipelines for batch processing. Using Apache Kafka as the message bus of the division's new big data platform has allowed for easier decoupling of scalable data pipelines, faster data onboarding, and stream processing with the goal to continuously improve insight into the HPC resources and their supporting systems. This talk will focus on the NCCS division's transition to Apache Kafka over the past few years to enhance the OLCF's current capabilities and prepare for Frontier, OLCF's future exascale system; including the development and deployment of a full big data platform in a Kubernetes environment from both a technical and cultural shift perspective. This talk will also cover the mission of the OLCF, the operational data insights related to high-performance computing that the organization strives for, and several use-cases that exist in production today.
This document describes the PETSc 3.3 Users Manual. It provides an overview of PETSc, which is a suite of data structures and routines for implementing large-scale application codes on parallel computers. PETSc uses MPI for communication and includes linear and nonlinear solvers as well as time integrators. It is organized hierarchically to provide different levels of abstraction and flexibility. While PETSc has a learning curve, its power and algorithms can make implementing efficient application codes simpler than developing them independently.

Large GIS Data Reprojection With FME Workbench - UTM Zone Fanout SolutionSafe Software
Our customer had an unfortunate alignment issue due to an error in initial project setup. Although the country of Mexico spans 6 UTM zones, the project was initially create entirely in UTM14. This caused a rather cylindrical and mis aligned coverage when viewed in it's entirety. At the time of conception (Jan 2015), The customer had over 3.2 million addresses documented in the system along with associated infrastructure and outside plant data.
The goal of this project was to fan out and reproject their data to a GCS to remove the current geographical ambiguity of the stored Oracle Spatial data, as well as eliminate the imminent issue of overlapping data from the adjacent UTM Zones.
The document discusses using Apache Cassandra and Apache Spark together for time series analysis of weather data. It provides an overview of Cassandra and how it is suitable for storing time series data modeled by primary key. It then discusses using Spark to perform analytics on the Cassandra data by rolling it up into aggregated tables for things like daily high/low temperatures and precipitation amounts. Example Cassandra table schemas and Spark queries are shown to illustrate the end-to-end workflow of ingesting raw weather data, storing it in Cassandra, and analyzing it using Spark.

ROLE OF DIGITAL SIMULATION IN CONFIGURING NETWORK PARAMETERSDeepak Shankar
Selecting the right Ethernet standard and configuring all the network devices in the embedded systems accurately is an extremely hard and rigorous job. The configuration depends on the topology, workloads of the connected devices, processing overhead at the switches, and the external interfaces. Network calculus, mathematical models and analytical techniques provide worst case execution time (WCET), but their probability of activity is extremely wide. This leads to overdesign which leads to higher costs, power consumption, weight, and size. Simulating the network is the best way to measure the throughput of the entire system. Digital system simulation provides better latency and throughput accuracy, but the accuracy is still limited because it does not consider the latency associated with the network OS, cybersecurity processing and scheduling. In many cases, these factors can reduce the throughput by 20-40%.
In this paper, we will present our research on modeling the entire Ethernet network, including the workloads, network flow control, scheduling, switch hardware, and software. To substantially increase the coverage and compare topologies, we have developed a set of benchmarks that provides coverage for different combination of deterministic, rate-constrained, and best effort traffic. During the presentation, we will cover the benchmarks, the list of attributes required to accurately model the traffic, nodes, switches, and the scheduler settings. We will also look at the statistics and reports required to make the configuration decision. In addition, we will discuss how the model must be constructed to study the impact of future requirements, failures, network intrusions, and security detection schemes.
Key Takeaways:
1. Learn how to efficiently use network simulation to design Ethernet systems
2. Develop a reusable benchmark and associated statistics to test different configurations
3. The role and impact of the CDT slots, guard band, send slope, idle slope, shuffle scheduling, flow control and virtual channels

Big data analytics is being used in healthcare and disease management to gain knowledge and insights from large datasets. Hypothesis validation and creation can lead to knowledge when applying big data techniques. Causal relationships between variables can be identified from data to understand the causes of events and alter outcomes. However, correlation does not always indicate causation, and confounding factors must be considered. Genomics data in particular poses challenges due to its large volume, velocity, variety and other attributes, but can be applied from research to precision medicine through genetic testing.
