Transition Manager Rio Tinto Pty Ltd (Australian Mining)
Lake Vermont Coal Mine Project Jul 2012–Jun 2013
Influential force progressing the successful below budget transition for the upgrade of the existing Lake
Vermont coal mining operation from 4mtpa to 9mtpa as a part of a new $2.3 billion Mining Operations
Contract. Complete project management of transition works within agreed time schedule. Within 12 months,
turned the operation from underperforming to achieve financial viability.
 Successfully completed the transition works project below budget. Strategically planned the phased
roll out of the new Mining Operations Contract with the Executive Leadership Team and facilitated
new innovations to drive cost savings.
 Overcame long standing resistance to change. Developed and implemented a programmed change
management process with employees on site utilising internal resources.
 Directed the tendering, award and commencement of works for a number of sub contracts on site
which included the construction of haul roads valued at $10 million, top soil stripping valued at $11
million and on site crushing and screening valued at $4 million.
 Drove procurement cost savings of over 20%, introduced innovations within the procurement process,
developed concise scope of works documentation and utilised existing capital resources.
 Engaged Head Office to leverage internal resources and personnel that mitigated the requirement for

The project situation / challenge
Mayson had strong experience working internationally, he had never needed a resume before so we were
starting from scratch. During the interview, Mayson downplayed his achievements so the challenge was
gaining the content which would allow him to shine.
