CMMI (Capability Maturity Model Integration) is a framework that describes best practices for processes that organizations can implement to improve their performance. It allows organizations to assess their processes, integrate departments, set process improvement goals, and benchmark their practices. Implementing CMMI leads to more directed, coordinated work with predictable results, as opposed to working randomly without clear goals. CMMI has five levels of process maturity. While individuals cannot be CMMI certified, companies can be appraised and certified at a given CMMI level. Many large IT services companies pursue CMMI accreditation.
