Extremes such as heatwaves, heavy precipitation and droughts are projected to be
larger in frequency and intensity with every additional increment of global warming
SIXTH ASSESSMENT REPORT
Working Group I – The Physical Science Basis
In the low and very low GHG emissions (scenarios SSP-1.9 and SSP1-2.6) air pollution
control policies, reduction in CH4 and other ozone precursor lead to rapid
improvements in air quality and to strong reductions in global surface ozone and
particule matter from 2040.

SIXTH ASSESSMENT REPORT
Working Group I – The Physical Science Basis
From WGI Ch6
From the Summary for policymakers:
Reductions in GHG emissions also lead to air
quality improvements. However, in the near
term, even in scenarios with strong reduction of
GHGs, as in the low and very low GHG
emissions scenarios , these improvements are
not sufficient in many polluted regions to
achieve air quality guidelines specified by the
World Health Organization (high confidence).

Many mitigation actions would
have benefits for health through
lower air pollution, active mobility
(e.g., walking, cycling), and shifts
to sustainable healthy diets (high
confidence). {IPCC SYR SPM

  • 20. SIXTH ASSESSMENT REPORT Working Group I – The Physical Science Basis In the low and very low GHG emissions (scenarios SSP-1.9 and SSP1-2.6) air pollution control policies, reduction in CH4 and other ozone precursor lead to rapid improvements in air quality and to strong reductions in global surface ozone and particule matter from 2040. Box TS.7, Figure 1
  • 21. SIXTH ASSESSMENT REPORT Working Group I – The Physical Science Basis From WGI Ch6 From the Summary for policymakers: Reductions in GHG emissions also lead to air quality improvements. However, in the near term, even in scenarios with strong reduction of GHGs, as in the low and very low GHG emissions scenarios , these improvements are not sufficient in many polluted regions to achieve air quality guidelines specified by the World Health Organization (high confidence).
