THE CLIL MODEL IN A
BILINGUAL SCHOOL
What is CLIL?
Content and Language Integrated Learning
• An approach in which a f……... language
is used as the m…………….. for teaching
a c……………. subject such as
S…………, H………... or …………..t. The
target language and the subject content
have a j……………. role in the learning.
• The focus is on natural language and
inherently interesting content that is
relevant to the learners’ other studies.
• Learners are learning as they use the
language, and using it as they learn;
not learning now to use later or
learning how to pass an exam.
What works in our reality?
CLIL Goals
• Bilingualism:
• High levels of proficiency in English and a
second language
• Biliteracy:
• High levels of academic proficiency in
English and a second language
• Multicultural competence:
• Understanding of different cultures and
development of high self esteem
Combining Skills
• All four language
skills:
CONTENT
1. Combining Elements
• Content
It is the subject area which determines the
language needed to learn.
• Communication
Language is used to learn as well as to
communicate.
• Cognition
Thinking skills and strategies need to be
developed.
• Culture
Exposure to alternative perspectives broadens the
mind.
CLIL in practice
• Language is used to learn as well as to
communicate.
• The subject matter determines the language
needed.
• Input comes from listening, and reading
meaningful material.
• Speaking focuses on fluency not accuracy.
• Lexis and grammar are recycled in writing
activities.
• Learners develop fluency by using English to
communicate for a variety of purposes through the
different subject matters.
• Learners (are expected to) become proficient in
English after 5-7 years.

  • 3. • The focus is on natural language and inherently interesting content that is relevant to the learners’ other studies. • Learners are learning as they use the language, and using it as they learn; not learning now to use later or learning how to pass an exam. What works in our reality?
  • 4. CLIL Goals • Bilingualism: • High levels of proficiency in English and a second language • Biliteracy: • High levels of academic proficiency in English and a second language • Multicultural competence: • Understanding of different cultures and development of high self esteem
  • 5. Combining Skills • All four language skills: CONTENT
  • 6. 1. Combining Elements • Content It is the subject area which determines the language needed to learn. • Communication Language is used to learn as well as to communicate. • Cognition Thinking skills and strategies need to be developed. • Culture Exposure to alternative perspectives broadens the mind.
  • 7. CLIL in practice • Language is used to learn as well as to communicate. • The subject matter determines the language needed. • Input comes from listening, and reading meaningful material. • Speaking focuses on fluency not accuracy. • Lexis and grammar are recycled in writing activities. • Learners develop fluency by using English to communicate for a variety of purposes through the different subject matters. • Learners (are expected to) become proficient in English after 5-7 years.

Editor's Notes

  1. La idea aquí es mostrar todo el estudio que estuvo detrás de la construcción de este libro, que en realidad es un libro para el siglo XXI porque busca formar gente con criterio pensadores, críticos, hay que forzar a que los profesores revisen el teachers y lean la metodología detrás del libro.
  2. Selections is designed to complement base courses in the higher sector of the market. It follows the progression of Brainstorm, so that the grammar students encounter in their course books will be at the same level as in Selections. However, Selections expands the vocabulary at every level, sot that students will be exposed to a wider range of language than the core language in their course books.
  3. All the information for the following lines you may find it in the Brainstorm Product Profile. As we don’t have any pages for levels 4, 5 and 6, it would be important to tell the teachers the difference in the unit structure for these levels.
