The Rule

 Antecedents and pronouns must be clear


 It must be clear who or what your pronouns refer
  back to

 Remember:
   Pronoun: a word that takes the place of a noun
    (I, he, she, they, etc.)
   Antecedent: the noun that the pronoun replaces
Examples

 My suitcase was on the plane, but now it’s gone.




 Tim told his older brother that he was working too
 hard.



 Although the pizza was cold, it was still good.
How to Fix

 My suitcase was on the plane, but now it’s gone.


 My suitcase was on the plane, but now the suitcase is
 gone.



 Tim told his older brother that he was working too hard.


 Tim told his older brother, “you are working too hard.”

 The mother of the young mountain climber wanted
 him to give it up.

 Peter walked with Kevin everyday while he was
 recovering from his accident.

 When Connie told her mother about the dirty
 swimming pool, she was angry.
