Being a teacher we wish to.....
1. To make our classroom look attractive and colourful.
Effective classroom set-up is functional.
2.Before you can instruct learners on procedures, routines
and expectations, you need the layout and physical
systems in place.
For example ,you don't want to tell your learners that part
of their morning routine is to turn in their homework if
there is no spot in the classroom for them to put their
work.

Howit
feels?
Being a teacher we wish to.....
The goal is to encourage learner independence so your
classroom run smoothly even if you aren't in the room.
You'll want to make sure learners are able to access all
of the materials they need without your being the
gatekeeper of the pencils, books, papers etc . Having
everything in its place allows you to delegate tasks to
your learners. Empowering them and saving your time .
Why do something yourself when you can teach the learners
to do it for you? Right?

NEAR THE DOOR
.B. ATTENDANCE :Taking attendance yourself is not an effective use of your limited
morning time . Somewhere near the door create an attendance station. One way to do it is
to use a simple push pin or clip chart. The learners will get their name when they enter the
room in the morning . It is their name tag they wear whole day. Those name tag left hang in
the push pin are absent. In the afternoon before the go home they will hang their name tag
again.
A. CUBBIES: Learners come to school with all sorts of things from home,
including jackets , backpack s ,rain coats, umbrellas, lunch box and others
.Assigning a spot in your classroom for each learner to put their belongings will not
only make learners feel like they have a place of their own in the classroom.

C. TURN-IN “TAKE –HOME “ FOLDER: Give each learner a
folder to use for all of their “take-home’ documents.
These documents include homework, permission slips,
notes home, letter, consents, parent’s information of
the up coming home visitation . Parents can also use this
areliable waytodelivernotesback toschool.

B. DAILY SCHEDULE: Write out the most common components of your daily
schedule on sentence strips and use a pocket chart to display them. You can easily
rearrange and swap out the sentence strips. Learners will know exactly what is
happening each day.-what special they are going to , and you will save yourself
from answering a million questions about schedules.
A. RULES POSTER: Display the classroom rules prominently in the front of the
room..Youll want to refer to them often in the first couple of weeks of school and
as needed throughout the year.

in the same place daily so that learners know where to look for them and can
copy them down as part of your routine.
C. MORNING AND END-OF-DAY PROCEDURE: Post your morning and
afternoon procedures so learners may refer to them as a daily checklist. (We
will discuss this further on Part 2)

DESK/STUDENT SEATING
SEATING ARRANGEMENT : Decide how you would like to arrange learners ‘ desks/chairs for
the majority of the activities. If your going to arrange the desks/chairs in groups, angle them
so that the desks/chairs are perpendicular to the front of the room. Arranging desks /chairs
in groups can foster cooperation and communication among learners ,and the expectations
you implement and reinforce will limit /prevent disruptions from chatty learners. Assign
seats from the first day of school , and make adjustments in the first week as you get to
know your learners.Label your desk groups so that you can easily call on them for things as
lining up.You can use different colors, flowers, animals and others.

OTHER AREAS
COOL DOWN CORNER: Inevitably , an upset learner will need a safe place
in the classroom to cool down and take a break. Establish a corner of the
room with a beanbag chair or pillow and a poster of emotion regulation
strategies.
BEHAVIOUR : Even if you are not going to track behaviour publicly ,you will
probably want to display posters to anchor charts reminding learners of your
behaviour system.

OTHER AREAS
CLASSROOM JOBS: Create an area to display and assign classroom jobs. An
easy way to do this is to take picture of each learner in the first week of
school and attach a magnet to the back of the photo .Arrange the classroom
jobs on a magnet board ,and easily swap the photos around when learners
change job.
DISPLAY SOME PERSONAL ITEMS:Displaying a few personal photographs
,your college banner on your table help s to build a relationship with your
learners. You dont have to tell everything about you .But knowing you as a
person ,rather than just a teacher ,will help learners feel comfortable
sharing their own home life with you.
