Dr. G.V. Black's classification system categorizes dental cavities into 5 classes based on their location. Class I cavities are located on occlusal surfaces. Class II cavities are on proximal surfaces of bicuspids and molars. Class III cavities are on proximal surfaces of anterior teeth not involving the incisal angle, while Class IV cavities do involve the incisal angle. Class V cavities are found on the gingival third of facial and lingual surfaces. W.J. Simon later added Class VI for lesions on incisal edges and cusp tips.
