The document discusses the challenges facing the modern education system and the need for reform. It notes that the system was not designed to meet today's needs and that past reform efforts like No Child Left Behind have had little success. It outlines new skills like critical thinking that students need to acquire but that many are not. It argues the problem is adaptive rather than technical, requiring new approaches rather than known solutions. It suggests education leaders will need to change organizational beliefs, behaviors, and their own practices to transform the system in response to new challenges.

Dr. Helen Dixon discusses Northern Regional College's efforts to address the challenges of digital transformation through its digital learning strategy. The strategy aims to embed a "Digital College" ethos, enhance teaching and learning with technology, and develop staff and students' digital capabilities. Key efforts include training programs for staff, procuring online teaching resources, and establishing support systems like digital learning mentors. Dixon emphasizes that digital transformation requires involvement across the college and cannot be led by one department alone. The goal is to move from merely surviving digitization to truly thriving in a digital environment.

It explores how partnerships that take a digital literacies approach and are pedagogy-led, sustainable, involve the whole cohort, and recognize student expertise can create communities of practice. Examples are provided of three case studies of projects developed through such partnerships that addressed specific educational needs, including reviews of learning apps, a choose your own adventure chemistry lab safety game, and a virtual reality campus tour. Benefits highlighted include staff being willing to try new digital approaches and students feeling able to contribute to teaching quality.
The document discusses factors that contribute to the successful implementation of eLearning solutions. It notes that software alone accounts for only 50% of success, while the other 50% depends on proper instructional design, project management, and alignment with business and educational strategies. Statistics show that many organizations plan to upgrade their learning management systems and consolidate multiple systems within the next year to improve learner data centralization, reporting, content integration and other enterprise applications. Key success factors include having a well-defined educational strategy, governance strategy, and business analysis in addition to effective project management and account support.

early adoption examples of dynamic social learning in real-world scenarios
- how social and collaborative tools deliver a personalised learning experience
Mark Hellinger, CEO of Xyleme, and Stacey Harris, the VP of Research from Brandon Hall Group spent some time analyzing a widespread and problematic deficiency among many learning departments: organizations not measuring if their learning content is effective. Many organizations are making assumptions about their content, which is leading to bad business decisions. Big Data is a major player in nearly every other industry and almost always connected to performance outcomes- why not in learning? Find out all you need to know now!
EDUSS Learning, owner of the world's first personalized learning platform using artificial intelligence, acquired a majority interest in Designing Success, Inc., creator of case management and performance tracking software Tracking At-A-Glance. The acquisition will allow clients to track non-academic outcomes and expand the reach of both software platforms into new markets like public housing, corrections, and vocational schools. Designing Success CEO Cheryl Wachtel was appointed CEO and believes the combination provides immediate benefits to clients.
Conor Gilligan from Webanywhere gave a presentation on the Extended Learning Enterprise (ELE). The ELE involves elearning targeted at non-employees to link learning outcomes to performance data across industries globally. Key benefits include measuring learning assessments against product sales. Sectors that could benefit include value added resellers, membership organizations, and for-profit training providers. The ELE differs from employee training in that it is community-driven, can create accreditation paths for certification, and allows purchasing content. Examples provided were Yum Brands reducing turnover through standardized classes and the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors increasing revenue through their online academy. Tools were also briefly mentioned.

Webinar: Empowering Continuous Learning with the Tin Can API (xAPI) Rustici Software
Employees are demanding more continuous and varied approaches to learning, but many L&D organizations struggle to keep up. And without it, they’ll have an increasingly difficult time connecting learning to business results.
Learn how CUES is using Tin Can API (xAPI) to plug L&D back into learning, and in the process plug learning back in to business results.
In this webinar, we’ll discuss:
*New types of learning methods and technologies for continuous learning
*The Learning Tech Stack and why a cohesive one is important
*How CUES empowers continuous learning for their members

GT Briefing May 2014: The new generation of learners presentationTracey Keys
Education is a basic need. Economic and social development depends on it; the ability for individuals to reach their full potential depends on it; business success depends on it.
Disruptive forces are already changing the landscape of education as traditional face-to-face learning moves towards virtual and interactive learning, However, educational institutions – whether primary, secondary or tertiary – need to step out of their comfort zones to reflect an increasingly complex world. Constantly developing technology, the mindsets of the new digital natives and future skills challenges demand radical shifts both in educational content and delivery.
So what will it take to reshape the education “industry” and prepare our educational systems and institutions for the future – in fact, who should the educators be?
This short presentation accompanies the GT Briefing May 2014: Preparing for a new generation of learners and workers.
Corporate and higher education. Two industries that, in the past, have had a clear divide with very little crossover. The difference in goals, learning styles and objectives paved the way for differing learning technologies platforms to evolve. Now, those stark lines are blurring as both sides are discovering they have content that’s relevant to the other.
Join Tammy Rutherford as she walks through the pros and cons of corporate and higher ed collaborating. And the challenges of these different technology platforms working together for a brighter future.
Alfred Essa, Director of Analytics Research and Strategy at Desire2Learn Inc., discusses how big data can help solve problems in education. He explains that education needs an enduring technology partner to support lifelong learning. Analytics at scale can help address issues like balancing quality, cost and access. Analytics can also power interactive, immersive learning and help personalize education for a diverse set of learners. Essa demonstrates Desire2Learn's student success system, which uses data to identify at-risk students, understand causes, apply interventions, and track success.

Editor's Notes
Democratisation of knowledge and access – The massive increase in the availability of ‘knowledge’ online and the mass expansion of access to university education in developed and developing markets will mean a fundamental change in the role of universities as originators and keepers of knowledge.
Demand is rising for a greater return on investment in higher education. The investment required for a college education is outpacing incomes. Student debt loads have grown 8% annually since economic recession began, but unemployment for recent college graduates remains high. As a result, many families and employers are questioning the value proposition of undergraduate degrees.
