9. Let’s Know the definition of article
The words a, an and the are usually called Article. They are called
Articles as they have some special significance as the part of speech.
“They are really Demonstrative Adjectives.” --- Wren and Martin
But a, an and generalized the to denote a class as a whole are not
Demonstrative Adjectives. Now , they are called Determiners.

If we wish to particularize the noun,
we use the Definite Article.

Indefinite Article A or An Only for singular number but for all genders
The choice between a and an is determined by sound. A is used before a word
beginning with a Consonant sound and An is used before a word beginning with
A Vowel sound.

13. Use Of A /AN
(i) A or An is used when it is mentioning someone or something (single countable
noun) for the first time.
I saw a man onthe street. An old lady cameto our house.

14. (ii) A or An is used toindicate a unit.
One hundred centimeters make a meter. An ounce is enough.

15. (iii) A or An is used in the sense of ‘one like’.
He thinks he is aRabindranath. He seems to be an Indian.

16. (iv) A or An is used before a unknown name or surname.
A Sakib Khan called on you.
An Ashraful came here tocollect the news.

17. (v)A or Anis usedin thesense ‘of thesame.
Birds of a feather flock together. A Jatin Babu called on you.

18. (vi) A or An is used todenote profession, trade,class etc.
