Location-Based Networks What are they and how do they work?
Location-Based Networks Merge the online world with local level engagement. Mobile phone applications. Use GPS to find places close to them. Find their location in the list and ‘check-in.’
Location-Based Networks Why on earth would you want to do that?! Connect with friends in the area. See what shops friends frequent. See what others think of these shops. Find and experience new places in the area. Play games based on experiencing these new places. New spin on updating your status, with comments merged with your location.
Why should you care? By the end of 2011, one in two Americans will own a smartphone. 43% of local retailers plan on jumping onboard with location services in the next two years.
Why should you care? These networks offer a lot of promotional opportunities. These networks are more influential than traditional advertising as they are available when clients are on-site.

Claiming Your Facebook Place Start with a familiar example.
Find Yourself on Your Mobile While at your salon, go to your Facebook App. Select Check-in Search for your Place
Create Your Place If you don’t have a place when you search, you can skip this whole process by simply entering your address into your Page.

Claim Your Place Click the link on the left-hand side of your places page that says “Is this your business?”
Claim Your Place The next screen asks you to certify that you are a representative of the business.  Select that you are and click ‘Continue.’
Claim Your Place This will take you through the verification process that Facebook uses to ensure that you are, in fact, part of this company. They will call the number provided in the Place so make sure to tell anyone that answers about this verification. If you don’t receive a call, click the link that says “Is this the wrong number?” and Facebook will lead you through an alternative verification process.

Find and experience new places in the area. Play games based on experiencing these new places. New spin on updating your status, with comments merged with your location.
  • 7. Why should you care? By the end of 2011, one in two Americans will own a smartphone. 43% of local retailers plan on jumping onboard with location services in the next two years.
  • 8. Why should you care? These networks offer a lot of promotional opportunities. These networks are more influential than traditional advertising as they are available when clients are on-site.

  • 10. Claiming Your Facebook Place Start with a familiar example.
  • 11. Find Yourself on Your Mobile While at your salon, go to your Facebook App. Select Check-in Search for your Place
  • 12. Create Your Place If you don’t have a place when you search, you can skip this whole process by simply entering your address into your Page.

  • 14. Claim Your Place Click the link on the left-hand side of your places page that says “Is this your business?”
  • 15. Claim Your Place The next screen asks you to certify that you are a representative of the business. Select that you are and click ‘Continue.’
  • 16. Claim Your Place This will take you through the verification process that Facebook uses to ensure that you are, in fact, part of this company. They will call the number provided in the Place so make sure to tell anyone that answers about this verification. If you don’t receive a call, click the link that says “Is this the wrong number?” and Facebook will lead you through an alternative verification process.
