This document examines the role of citizen engagement and hackathons in promoting sustainable tourism development. It analyzes the results of the SHARE Challenge hackathon in South Australia which received 88 ideas from citizens. Most ideas focused on utilizing underused assets and addressing unemployment. The hackathon engaged citizens from different sectors and inspired ideas in tourism, agriculture and other industries. The document concludes that incorporating citizen engagement tools like hackathons can promote entrepreneurship and bottom-up approaches to sustainable tourism development by unlocking local ideas.
