Christmas in Bulgaria is celebrated with the whole family at home enjoying traditional vegetarian meals. Common dishes include beans, rice and vegetable meals wrapped in cabbage or vine leaves, salads, cheese, and pita or banitza filled with coins for good luck. Families also participate in the tradition of Survakane, where children beat family members and livestock with a decorated branch called a survachka while reciting blessings. This brings health, wealth and fertility while the children receive treats and money in return.
