Christine de Pisan was a French poet, essayist, and biographer born in 1364 in Venice, Italy. She had to support herself and her three children after her husband's death in 1387 and her father's death in 1389, becoming one of the first women to earn a living as a professional writer. She wrote defending women and in support of Joan of Arc. Christine de Pisan advocated for women's education and wrote extensively throughout her life until her death in 1430 in Poissy, France.
