Empires, States, and the New World, 1500–1775
In the period from 1500 to 1775, many of the ways in which the world was or- ganized began to change. First and foremost, most parts of the world were drawn into regular, ongoing contact in ways that had never happened in the past. Where previously there had been several “worlds” in the world—the Chinese world, the Indian Ocean world, the Mediterranean world, and the Americas, as yet unknown to Europeans, Asians, or Africans—after 1500 two new links drew the entire globe into a single world for the first time. The voy- age of Christopher Columbus in 1492 opened up the New World and estab- lished new relations among the Americas, Europe, and Africa. But there was also a less well-known Pacific route linking the New World to China after the Spanish established a colony in the Philippines in 1571. These new linkages led to the exchange around the world of commodities, ideas, germs, foods, and people, in the process creating a dynamic but also very peculiar kind of New World, quite different from the Old (that is, Afro-Eurasia). We can eas- ily think of these sixteenth-century developments as the “first globalization.” A second large process was the continued growth and vitality of empires throughout Eurasia. In the sixteenth century, empires remained the most com- mon political form for bringing large parts of the earth under human control. Of all the various kinds of political and economic systems that humans have devised to draw sustenance from the land and to increase our numbers, by far the most successful was an empire. Why we are not now living in empires in- stead of nation–states is worth pondering. We aren’t because a new kind of state system developed in western Europe. To be sure, Spanish control of much of the New World initially gave them the resources to attempt to establish an
empire, but that attempt also elicited fierce resistance among other European states, both killing the prospects for an empire in Europe and launching a new kind of international political order.
The third major process concerns the growth of a system of sovereign states in Europe and the linkage between that process and war. In comparison with Asian empires, the European states appear to be small and rather fragile constructs that could not possibly compete with the larger empires. Their rulers were so poor that they constantly had to seek loans to maintain their militaries. They were so small that they did not have within their borders all the resources necessary for their own defense, and, had the Spanish succeeded in establishing an empire in Europe and eliminating interstate war, indepen- dent European states might not have developed at all. As it was, the system of European interstate war favored a particular kind of state that developed in England and France in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, leading to conflict between those two for much of the eighteenth century.

The Roman Empire had its continuation in the east as the Byzantine Empire. But in the west, Europe was shattered by the destruction of Roman institutions. It literally crumbled as people vacated the dying or destroyed urban centers and fled to the country and simpler rural lifeways.
In onsite classes, I like to show the History Channel program called Life After People to demonstrate what it must have felt like to watch a sophisticated complex urban civilization devolve back to nature in the post-classical era. It uses Computer-Generated Imaging to show that, in a scenario where people are removed, time destroys the icons of our complex industrial civilization. Vines tear apart skyscrapers and algae clogs Hoover Dam. The lights go out and nature and wildlife cover the urban landscape.You can rent or stream this video from Netflix.
Rome’s collapse sent Europe backward into a simpler, non-urbanized period. Imagine all the complexities of urban life that we’ve discussed – diversified roles, complex religions and rituals, and levels of classism from elites to slaves – falling apart. The population of the City of Rome itself was reduced from about 1 million to around 10,000.
Without slaves and overseers to maintain baths, theaters, aqueducts and other public amenities of urban Roman life all over Europe, these structures and the customs associated with them fell to ruin. Even literacy and theoretical knowledge fell by the wayside. Historians called it the “Dark Ages” because of an absence of writing from this period to “illuminate” for us what happened then.

But there was also a less well-known Pacific route linking the New World to China after the Spanish established a colony in the Philippines in 1571. These new linkages led to the exchange around the world of commodities, ideas, germs, foods, and people, in the process creating a dynamic but also very peculiar kind of New World, quite different from the Old (that is, Afro-Eurasia). We can eas- ily think of these sixteenth-century developments as the “first globalization.” A second large process was the continued growth and vitality of empires throughout Eurasia. In the sixteenth century, empires remained the most com- mon political form for bringing large parts of the earth under human control. Of all the various kinds of political and economic systems that humans have devised to draw sustenance from the land and to increase our numbers, by far the most successful was an empire. Why we are not now living in empires in- stead of nation–states is worth pondering. We aren’t because a new kind of state system developed in western Europe. To be sure, Spanish control of much of the New World initially gave them the resources to attempt to establish an
empire, but that attempt also elicited fierce resistance among other European states, both killing the prospects for an empire in Europe and launching a new kind of international political order.
The third major process concerns the growth of a system of sovereign states in Europe and the linkage between that process and war. In comparison with Asian empires, the European states appear to be small and rather fragile constructs that could not possibly compete with the larger empires. Their rulers were so poor that they constantly had to seek loans to maintain their militaries. They were so small that they did not have within their borders all the resources necessary for their own defense, and, had the Spanish succeeded in establishing an empire in Europe and eliminating interstate war, indepen- dent European states might not have developed at all. As it was, the system of European interstate war favored a particular kind of state that developed in England and France in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, leading to conflict between those two for much of the eighteenth century.

The Roman Empire had its continuation in the east as the Byzantine Empire. But in the west, Europe was shattered by the destruction of Roman institutions. It literally crumbled as people vacated the dying or destroyed urban centers and fled to the country and simpler rural lifeways.
In onsite classes, I like to show the History Channel program called Life After People to demonstrate what it must have felt like to watch a sophisticated complex urban civilization devolve back to nature in the post-classical era. It uses Computer-Generated Imaging to show that, in a scenario where people are removed, time destroys the icons of our complex industrial civilization. Vines tear apart skyscrapers and algae clogs Hoover Dam. The lights go out and nature and wildlife cover the urban landscape.You can rent or stream this video from Netflix.
Rome’s collapse sent Europe backward into a simpler, non-urbanized period. Imagine all the complexities of urban life that we’ve discussed – diversified roles, complex religions and rituals, and levels of classism from elites to slaves – falling apart. The population of the City of Rome itself was reduced from about 1 million to around 10,000.
Without slaves and overseers to maintain baths, theaters, aqueducts and other public amenities of urban Roman life all over Europe, these structures and the customs associated with them fell to ruin. Even literacy and theoretical knowledge fell by the wayside. Historians called it the “Dark Ages” because of an absence of writing from this period to “illuminate” for us what happened then.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic Imperative
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

Transition to Modern Times, 1200 to 1500 CE Compare and contrast overseas commerce in the European, Muslim, and East Asian contexts between 1400 and 1650. Compare and contrast the population size of the various major civilizations of the world in 1400 and 1660. What role did religion play in politics and commerce in the various cultures of the world between 1400 and 1650? Which cultures showed the most religious toleration? Why was the discovery of gold and silver by the Spaniards in the New World so important for world commerce after 1560?

Despite expansion into what became known as the Americas coupled with a great increase in wealth, why was Europe still not able to challenge the major empires of the Middle East and Asia militarily during the period 1500–1600? List the assets and liabilities of the Chinese civilization under the Ming dynasty. Why did they not expand into other areas of the world with the same desires as the various European nation states? Compare and contrast the development of the Ottoman, Safavid, Mughal, and Ming bureaucracies with the governments of the various European monarchies. Assess the impact of the European trade in enslaved Africans on Africa, Europe, and the Americas. The World Changes, 1400 to1500 CE What purposes did the great Chinese voyages during the Ming era serve? Compare the extent of the Ottoman Empire with earlier civilizations and discuss the possibility that the Ottoman Empire re-unified the traditional centers of civilization (Mesopotamia, Egypt, and the Eastern Mediterranean world). Why did the Portuguese sail south and the Spanish sail west in their voyages of exploration? What impacts did the expansion of European and Islamic powers have on Africa during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries? What obstacles prevented Charles V, the accidental heir to the Habsburg and Spanish Empires, from consolidating imperial power?
