Chocolate Child Labor
Chocolate is the one of the famous snack in the world and consumed by a lot of consumers all
around the world. Chocolate is made from cacao beans and cacao beans are produced by
smallholder farmers. Most of the world's cacao beans comes from West Africa, mostly the Republic
of Côte d'Ivoire more than 40% of the world's cacao beans. The cacao beans they grow sold to the
most of the chocolate company. I found out the cacao beans may be the result of unfair labor, child
labor and the slave. In the Republic of Côte d'Ivoire, there is about 800,000 children are working at
the cacao farm. These children are forced to work under such harsh condition due to reason such as

Eating traditional Portuguese food was a way of connecting with my living family members and
ancestors. Preparing, eating, sharing these foods, as well as sharing the stories associated with them
were vital in the maintenance of my Portuguese identity. The first few months of being vegan were
difficult because I struggled to fit in. Eating at the dinner table with my aunts, uncles, and cousins
became an uncomfortable activity. I was constantly met with criticism, confusion, and
disappointment. I was also pressured, from several family members, to return to my past ways of
eating. I could no longer share in the experience of eating these traditional foods with my family.

indicate that the Southern coastline of West Africa is a major cocoa bean producing area. The pattern
starts at Sierra Leone and follows the coastline down to Cameroon. Some exception to this pattern is
in Nigeria, in the area of Port Harcourt there is no production and in Benin there is also no
production. The brighter orange as indicated on the map which is the main part of Côte d'Ivoire
(Ivory Coast) and Ghana accounts for 60% – 2.2 million metric tons of World cocoa production

authorized the 13th Amendment to the Constitution to end what can be described as the darkest
chapter of American history. Many in Western Society seem to be unaware of the contemporary
slavery still plaguing many developing countries, particularly involving children. The 2010
documentary film called The Dark Side of Chocolate explored the modern day slavery that is
occurring within many West African countries, where children are being exploited and trafficked in
order to harvest chocolate. In fact, the United States Department of State estimates that
approximately 109,000 children in the Ivory Coast's cocoa industry work under "the worst forms of
child labor" (Mustapha, 2010, p.3).
By exploring the use of child labor in the chocolate industry in West Africa, this paper will present
the argument where I will argue that the unethical use of child labor has led to impoverished
families, negative health impacts among children, and has affected economies in West Africa. In

stolen from their families and stripped of their education and health; they are also subjected to
countless hours of brutal work and physical abuse. What they get in return is another unit of cocoa
beans to harvest, a tedious and dangerous task that can result in grave injury.

In your eyes, a company that creates such wonderful products can do no wrong. But you might think differently if you knew what went into the making of your chocolate bar. As producers of more than half the world's cocoa beans, the Western African countries of Ghana and the Ivory Coast are in constant need of laborers, often calling on a younger population to replenish their supply. In fact, more than 1.8 million (or thirty percent of) Sub–Saharan African children under the age of fifteen are laborers, mainly in agricultural fields like cocoa farming. While this percentage seems shockingly high, the most disturbing truth is that over twelve thousand of these children –– many of them as young as eleven –– are sold to cocoa farm owners as slaves. Not only are they stolen from their families and stripped of their education and health; they are also subjected to countless hours of brutal work and physical abuse. What they get in return is another unit of cocoa beans to harvest, a tedious and dangerous task that can result in grave injury.
