Classical Chinese music and traditional Chinese painting are similar in that they both rely on empty or silent spaces to create harmony and allow the audience to use their imagination. For paintings, the empty spaces give the whole painting life and freedom for viewers to appreciate it. Similarly, in music, the silences and pauses between phrases are combined with the sounds to form a poetic experience. A good performer is able to create a dynamic link with the audience through not just technical skill but understanding the spirit of the music and passing that on with a pure heart. Both art forms involve an interactive process between the creator and audience.
