The common chimpanzee lives in central Africa, primarily in the Congo and pockets throughout forested and savannah plains. Chimpanzees live in communities and are highly intelligent and social. They construct elaborate nests in trees and are omnivorous, eating fruits, insects, and small mammals. Chimpanzee populations are declining due to habitat loss and poaching.
