☺ Child Labour: STILL A
WORLDWIDE CHALLENGE
☺ The UNICEF
☺ Conclusion
• The term “Child Labour” is often defined as work
that deprives children of their childhood, their
dignity, their health and education, and condemning
them to a life of poverty and want; thus, it’s a serious
violation of their rights.
• It refers to work that is mentally, physically,
socially or morally dangerous and harmful to children;
and interferes with their schooling by: taking away
from them the opportunity to attend school
or combining school attendance with excessively long
and heavy work.
CHILD LABOUR IS A SOCIAL CRIME,
EVERY CHILD HAS A RIGHT TO SHINE!!
• Recent global estimates based on data of UNICEF,
the ILO and the World Bank indicate that close to
250 million children aged 5 to 17 are engaged in
Child Labour. More than 150 million of these
children are working in dangerous conditions,
including slavery and slavery-like practices such as
forced and bonded labour and child soldiering, sexual
exploitation, or are used by adults in illicit activities,
including drug trafficking.

Child Labour includes:
 Child Labour before the minimum legal age
 The worst forms of child
 Hazardous work
Child Labour before the
minimum legal age
• The basic minimum legal age at which children are
authorized to work is 15 years (14 in developing
countries). For light work (only a few hours from
time to time) the limit is fixed at 13 to 15 years
(12-14 in developing countries). Finally, for
hazardous work, the limit is pushed up to 18 years
(16 years under certain conditions in developing
countries).
The worst forms of Child
Labour
• The worst forms of child labour includes all forms of
slavery or similar practices such as: being imprisoned,
separated from their families, exposed to serious hazards
and illnesses or left to fend for themselves on the streets
of large cities. It also consist of illicit activities or
activities likely to endanger the safety, health, and morals
of children, such as prostitution, pornography, forced or
compulsory recruitment for armed conflict, drug
trafficking…
Hazardous work
• This encompasses domestic tasks carried out
over long hours in an unhealthy environment, in
dangerous places requiring the use of
dangerous tools or materials, or forcing the
child to carry objects that are too heavy.
Joblessness
of Elders
illiteracy
Lack of
Protection
from the
Government
Over-
population
Poverty
Failure
of LawsBeing
lonely,
homeless..
• The difficulty of tasks and harsh working conditions
create a number of problems such as premature ageing,
malnutrition, depression, drug dependency…
• Additionally, a child who works will not be able to have a
normal education and will be doomed to become an
illiterate adult, having no possibility to grow in his or her
professional and social life.
• In certain cases, child labour also endangers a child’s
dignity and morals, especially when sexual exploitation is
involved, such as prostitution and child pornography.
• Furthermore, a child who works will be more exposed to
malnutrition. These children are often victims of physical,
mental, and sexual violence.
• Child exploitation exists on all continents and takes various
forms:
 In South East Asia, girls are sold to supply prostitution
networks or to work as domestic workers.
 In Africa, parents sell their children, often for livestock.
These children are exploited in plantations, mines, or will
become domestic workers.
 In America , children are victims of prostitution to satisfy
the perverse appetite of tourists, and are exploited more
and more by drug traffickers.
What ‘WE CAN DO’ in
order to stop Child Labour
 Provide free education for orphans
 Start campaign against Child Labour
 Make the rural people aware about the benefits of
education
 Help the government to quiet child labour by
contacting the officials and making them aware
about this disease happening in our society
World day against Child
Labour
• It is a United Nations Agency responsible for providing
humanitarian and developmental help to children around
the world. It was first established in 1946 as the United
Nations International Children's Emergency Fund.
• UNICEF's programs focus on developing community-level
services to promote the health and well-being of children.
• UNICEF also partners with civil society organizations to
support a holistic child protection approach to child
labour, contribute to the evidence base on child labour
through research and data collection, and advocate across
all stakeholders to end child labour.
• And last but not least, there is a must-watch
video that will resume all the things I said
previously:
