Child Development Theories Essays
Writing an essay on the topic of child development theories can be quite challenging due to the
vast amount of research and theories available. Firstly, understanding the various theories
proposed by renowned psychologists such as Piaget, Vygotsky, and Erikson requires in-depth
reading and comprehension. Each theory presents unique perspectives on how children develop
cognitively, socially, emotionally, and physically, which necessitates careful analysis and
comparison.
Furthermore, synthesizing these theories and integrating them into a coherent and cohesive essay
requires critical thinking and analytical skills. It's essential to not only explain the key concepts of
each theory but also to evaluate their strengths, weaknesses, and real-world implications.
Additionally, discussing empirical evidence and research findings that support or challenge these
theories adds another layer of complexity to the essay.
Moreover, addressing the practical applications of these theories in various settings, such as
education, parenting, and clinical practice, requires a nuanced understanding of their
implications. Balancing theoretical concepts with practical examples and case studies further
enriches the essay but demands extensive research and careful selection of relevant materials.
Overall, crafting a comprehensive essay on child development theories entails thorough research,
critical analysis, and effective communication of complex ideas. It's a task that demands time,
effort, and a deep understanding of psychological concepts and their applications in real-life
contexts.

Cows Research Paper
Cows: Pets That Make Sense If you ask me, the only possible pet a person should
have is a cow. Cows love you, they are harmless, they look nice, they don t need a
litter box, and they keep the grass down. Cows are so trusting that you can t help
but lose your heart to them. Where I live, in Yorkshire, there is a herd of cows
down the lane. You can stand by the wall any hour of the day or night and pretty
soon the cows will all waddle over to stand nearby. They aren t smart enough to
know what to do next, but they seem to be happy just to be in your presence. Mired
in their contentedness, they will stand there indefinitely. They will listen to your
problems and never ask for a thing in return. Cows will be your friends forever, and

The Diet Pill And Supplement Craze
Society today has become a place where appearance is regarded as very important.
It is believed that beautiful people are the happiest and most successful and when
it comes to weight and physique size matters. Another social norm in our society is
smoking. Whether it stems from the ideal that smoking is cool or from mere
addiction, smoking has become so common that it is no longer frowned upon
generally speaking however being overweight is. Women today especially want to
fit into society s perception of what the ideal woman looks like and will do almost
anything it seems to gain this satisfaction. From gym memberships, extreme diets
and exercise programs to the latest diet pill or supplement craze. Women will
endure almost anything to be the ideal weight. Among these conceptions is the
idea that smoking can prevent a woman from gaining weight or can assist in
keeping the weight off. One familiar mindset is what better way to stay thin than to
smoke? and it is a widespread idea. Though smoking can in fact be tied to benefits
such as weight control, stress reduction and improved mood, it is still the number
one cause of preventable disease and death. Even though society has heard of and
is aware of the dangers and health risks adjoining smoking it is still often used as a
tactic to control weight especially among women. In this paper I am going to discuss

Tuskegee Syphilis Paper
Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment

University of Phoenix
Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment The Tuskegee Syphilis experiment was a 40 years
study from 1932 to 1972 in Tuskegee, Alabama. The experiment was conducted on
a group of 399 impoverished and illiterate African American sharecroppers. This
disease was not; however revealed to them by the US Government. They were told
they were going to receive treatment for bad blood. The study proved to be one of
the most horrendous studies carried out that disregarded the basic ethical principles
of conduct. It symbolized medical and disregard for human life. Standard medical
treatment at the time were toxic, dangerous and, often time questionable in respect to
effect. Some of the studies ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These 399 subjects were like lab rats with no value. The only offer these men
received free physicals, free rides and hot meals on examination days, free treatment
for their ailment and burial strip end paid to their survivors ($50, 000)(Hiltner, 1973).
Failure to obtain consent and an offer of incentive for participation indicated that
PHS doctors were indeed performing immoral and unethical study on human beings
with total lack of human rights and life. But most of these individuals in the study had
no idea that their rights were violated. Since, this experiment went on for many years
no one knew any better since they thought everything that was happening during this
study was what they were suppose to experience (Timeline, 2008).
For 40 year experimentation, a high price had been paid for this knowledge. Men
had died; wives and their children had been infected because of the science and
research (CDC, 2008). Little imagination is needed to ascribe racial attitudes toward
the white government officials who took part in running this experiment but what
about all the African Americans who took part with them. The experiments name
came from a Tuskegee Institute that was a black university founded by Booker T.
Washington. The affiliated hospital gave the PHS its medical facility to use during
these studies that was a predominately black facility. Most of the individuals that
were working on the experiment were black doctors and nurses
The Day At Marine Corps
A million thoughts were running through my head as we drove from Savannah,
Georgia International Airport in the dead of night. I along with 50 other new
recruits were herded on to a bus and told to put our heads down as they drove around
for what seemed like hours. The recruiters used this as a disorienting and scare tactic,
so we would have no idea where we were. As we arrived at MarineCorps Recruit
Depot Parris Island, I thought to myself, holy shit, am I really doing this? As the
bus pulled to a stop a drill instructor stepped on to the bus. He began shouting
unintelligible words at us in a raspy, gruff voice. The only words I was able to
understand were off and bus . I didn t give it a second thought, I was off the bus as fast

I had been awake for over 40 hours when they issued us our M16 A2 Service Rifles
and cleaning kits. Little did I know that I would be spending night and day with this
rifle and it would become a part of me. Receiving our rifles was the highlight of the
day, we knew it was real now. After the armory we put on all 50 pounds of gear and
walked for what seemed like miles to our new home, 4th Battalion Platoon 4005
Upper Deck Papa Company A Side. When we were introduced to our new home we
were told to label all our new issued gear. 2 pairs of combat boots, 4 towels, 7 pairs of
underwear, 7 sports bras, 2 sets of utility camos, etc. Once we had finished labeling
all our gear we were able to hit the racks, I was asleep before my head hit the pillow.
Being awake for 54 hours had taken its toll on me. But I knew this was the easiest
day we would have during our stay. I awoke the following morning to shouts of
LIGHTS, LIGHTS, LIGHTS! which meant get the hell out of bed as fast as you
can and stand on line. As we stood waiting for our instructions from our drill
instructors, we could all sense each others fear. For the next 13 weeks we would
be told what to do how to think and when to breath. Not only was it physical but
also psychological, we would be torn down and built in to the perfect Marine. After
we were yelled at to get dressed in our camies, we marched down to the chow hall. I

Plant Distribution Essay
Distribution of Plants and Types of Distribution
In former times, after the industrial revolution. The technological discoveries and the
constant evolution of the companies impelled these to optimize the resources of
manufacture in the jobs. also to implement new production methods. The current
market that is becoming more competitive pressures companies to have a flexible
system of products that gives the possibility to change and adapt to the needs of the

adapting the principles and theoretical foundations to the practical work performed
by the plant manager, Richard Dick Muther (Nov. 20, 1913 Oct. 15, 2014). He was
one of the most famous industrial engineers who develops an analogy where he
compares a factory with a person and lists some key elements.
1. It is the skeleton associated with the distribution of the plant.
2. It is the muscular system this is associated with the handling of material.
3. It is the nervous system and is associated with communications and controls.
4. It is the respiratory, circulatory and digestive system where it is associated with
general and auxiliary services.
5. And finally is the flesh and skin where it associates with the roof of the building.
For the work of each work and its workstations the design or distribution of plant is
elementary, since it can generate dependencies in the distribution such as: general
services, handling of material, communications, procedures, all this with the purpose
of directing a decisive method in the same plant.

Archetypes In The Hero And The God
The Hero with a Thousand Faces by Joseph Campbell elucidates why all heroes are
archetypes in all types of literature written from the BC s to present time. In The
Hero and the God, Campbell rationalizes that all heroes have the same character
traits and follow the same process or steps in their stories. Campbell also justifies that
no matter where or when the herowas from the stories are all the xeroxes. These steps
that he explains are separation, initiation, and return. First and foremost, Campbell
has divided separation, initiation, and return into subcategories which are; The Call to
Adventure, Supernatural Aid/ The Helper, Trials and Triumphs, The Return and
Wisdom or Knowledge Gained. The first step of the process is The Call to Adventure.
Gender Roles in Sitcoms
Gender roles in Sitcoms
Gender is the crucial factor in characterization in the majority of sitcoms. Up until
the impact of feminism in the 1970s, in the UK at least, it is clear that most of the
successful sitcoms featured leading male characters (Hancock, Steptoe, Dad s
Army, Till Death Do Us Part, Porridge etc.). Women were more likely to feature in
ensemble casts The Rag Trade, Are You Being Served? This was also a function of
the employment opportunities for women. Since the 1970s, women in leading roles
have been more common (but the most successful comedies have tended to be based
on couples rather than single women). (Roy Stafford, TV Sitcoms and Gender,

She then adds to this family of five when she and Maxwell have fraternal twins.
Other characters include sardonic butler Niles (Daniel Davis), and Maxwell s
socialite business partner C.C. Babcock (Lauren Lane), who views Fran with
jealousy and skepticism. (Wikipedia, The Nanny, ONLINE)
The Nanny is no longer the type of sitcom where the wife stays at home and just her
husband goes to work. Compared with Bewitched , this sitcom is more modern and
more different in what concerns the gender roles. Fran Fine is no longer just a home
loving wife who does everything to support her husband, but she exposes her point
of view and most often she dose so as everyone to do as she wants to. She has a
stronger character and is more independent comparing with Samantha.

Interreactivity, Empathy And Complicity In The Walking...
The game toggles back and forth with scenes that put the player in control of
exploring the environment as well as following the games guideline. There lyes a
moral misconception in the game where the player is introduced to believe their
decisions effect a different outcome to how the storyline will turn out. Once starting
each episode, a black screen displays the words, This gameseries adapts to the
choices you make. The story is tailored by how you play . On the contrary to this
seemingly straightforward statement, no matter how believable the game makes it
seem, the playersonline experience fades in and out. The playeroriginally feels
obligated to be responsible for certain characters traumatic deaths, but in actuality of
the game, is not since the outcome is pre planned regardless of choice. Offline and
online continuity (swapping back an forth between online and offline ) proves the
false justification of The Walking Dead[s] claims and puts the player in seemingly
relevant irrelevant scenarios.

Circulatory Shock
Circulatory shock is a syndrome of widespread cellular hypoxia, triggered by a
systemic alteration of perfusion and delivery and/or utilization of tissue oxygen,
eventually causing end organ dysfunction and death [53]. It can be subdivided into 4
distinct categories according to its primary pathophysiological mechanism, namely
cardiogenic, hypovolemic, obstructive and distributive [54]. In the first 3 types,
perfusion has changed as a consequence of the cardiac output decrease, whereas
distributive types of shock are related to a primary dysfunction of the resistive
component of the cardiovascular system. In vasoplegia, vascular tone is reduced and
there is a noticeably depressed constrictive response of arterioles to vasoconstrictors,

Various contributing mechanisms have been identified, including the negative
inotropic effects of different circulating factors, especially cytokines (TNFО±, IL 1ОІ
and IL 6), lysozyme c and endothelin 1, disturbances of intracellular calcium
trafficking within cardiac myocytes, alterations of myocardial microvascular blood
flow, mitochondrial abnormalities and autonomic dysfunction [71 73]. There are
various effects which may be responsible for the toxic actions of peroxynitrite on the
heart, including myocardial cell death, either by caspase 3 dependent apoptosis [74],
or PARP mediated necrosis [75]. A direct correlation linking the degree of myocardial
PARP activation and the severity of cardiac functional alterations has been established
in humans with septic shock [76]. Myocardial contractility can also be impaired by
peroxynitrite due to disturbance in regulatory mechanism of intracellular calcium
through the inactivation of SERCA2A [77], by altering different myofibrillar
proteins including actin, myosin [78] and alpha actinin [79], by interrupting
myofibrillar energetics through inactivation of the myofibrillar isoform of creatine
kinase [80] and by activating matrix metalloproteinases [81], which promotes
contractile failure by cleaving key sarcomeric proteins including troponin and myosin
light chain
Compare And Contrast Children And Adults
Most people will say that the best days of your life are going to be during your
youth, where you didn t have to worry about anything and had no responsibilities.
When I was a young child, I remember wanting to be a grown up so bad that I got
mad at my parents because they treated me like a kid. To this day, I still do not
understand why kids wantto grow up and be adults so quickly. Now that I m slowly
turning into an adult, I can tell that kids have it way easier than adults do. Being a
child is probably the best thingthat can ever happen to you. When you re a child
you have nothing to worry about. Children have responsibilities that only involve
housework or school. They have to wash dishes, clean their rooms, make the bed,
and take out the trash. These are called chores, and most normal kids hate doing
chores. These responsibilities are mainly at home jobs, and they have more that
involve schoolwork. A child is responsible for finishing class and homework when
the teacher asks them to and are also held responsible to be the best kids they can
be at school. A child does not have as many responsibilities as an adult and that s
good because they are still kids and don t need to be stressed out a whole lot. Kids
have it easier because when... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Kids and grown ups both have things that they need to get done in order to do the
things that don t cause them stress. They both hold responsibilities, some more than
others, but they still have responsibilities. They both feel stress once in a while and
they deal with it however they see fit. Both adults and kids continue to grow even
though they are different ages. Children and adults both have emotions and also get
sick from time to time. Adults and children go through hard times and it is what
makes them who they are. There are many similarities between adults and children
but these are just a few
Children At A Local Fitness Center
For my observations, I interviewed Penny who teaches gymnastics to children at a
local fitness center. She teaches classes every Friday and Saturday to children
ranging from 2 14 years old. I observed her multiple times and recorded 6 hours of
observations. After talking to Penny Lane, I found out she did gymnastics as a child
at her local fitness center. She was a student for there for about 8 years, while
growing up. Then while she was in high schoolshe was asked to teach for students at
her fitness center. She enjoyed it so much that when she moved up to Bellingham, she
asked the fitness center in town if she could teach some lessons. At the time, no one
was teachinggymnastics and the fitness center said that she could teach. She was
able to create her own lesson plans and has been working at this location for 2
years. This is how she was able to get involved with this type of work. She did
mention a few struggles with the job such as the fitness center does not have a lot
of funding and that sometimes hinders the lessons and she explained that older
students tend to drop out and go somewhere else. When I asked her how she felt
about her work she said that it was easy and fun. She really enjoys working with
kids and feels comfortable teaching gymnastics. She wants to keep this job
throughout her schooling because she wants to be an elementary school teacher
once she graduates from college. She doesn t make very much money so, I would say

Planning A Youth Centre Within A Suburb Of 5000 People
And...
1. INTRODUCTION
Needs Assessment (NA) is a systematic set of approaches that is used to establish the
needs of a community by identifying; at risk groups, risk factors associated with the
health and establishing resources available in the community that can be used to
mitigate the health problem (Lebron et al. 20016, p. 111). NA therefore, requires
community participation, is conducted before planning an intervention and is used to
tailor interventions that suit the target population (Lebron et al. 20016, p. 111).
This report will be focusing on approaches a local government will use to establish a
youth centre in a suburb of 5000 people and will focus on:
1.Community Profile
2.2 Secondary Data sources
3.2 Approaches of youth engagement and their strengths and limitations
2. COMMUNITY PROFILE
There are certain components of the youth community the council needs to consider
when planning a NA of the youth centre: demographics, marginalised/minority
groups, social economic status (SES), cultural differences and geography, this will
enable the council to build a community youth profile (Jack Holt 2008,p.54 55).
First the council needs to know the range of age and gender of the youth in the
community (Jack Holt 2008, p.55). This demographic information will help the
council when establishing the youth centre i.e. know what to include in the centre
based on the gender and age differences (Jack Holt 2008, p.54 55).

Mexican-Indian Pearl
In this story a Mexican Indian pearl diver named Kino awakens to the sound of
crowing roosters. Kino lives near the village of La Paz, on the Pacific coast of the
Baja Peninsula. His house is made out of brush and bundles of straw fastened
together to make walls and a roof. He also has a makeshift cradle hanging from the
roof of the hut, where his infant son, Coyotito, sleeps. Kino also has a wife Juana
laying down on the mat.Juana rises to check on Coyotito and also starts a fire. Kino
also gets up and wraps himself in a blanket and slides into his sandals. In the
company of a goat and a dog, Kino stares with the detachment of God at a group of
industrious ants underneath his feet. Behind him Kino hears Juana singing and

road, carefully walking in a wheel rut to conceal their tracks. They walk all night
and make camp in a roadside shelter at sunrise. After eating a small breakfast, Juana
rests until midday. Kino spots a cluster of ants and lays down his foot as an
obstacle. The ants climb over it, and he keeps his foot in place and watches them scale
The Holy City Of Jerusalem
Through the deliverance of a speech the former Pope Urban II incited Catholics all
over Europe to take action in reclaiming the Holy city of Jerusalem from the
Muslims in the Middle East. It was in this year,1095, that the beginning of the first,
of nine, Crusades and thus the first series of religious wars between the Catholics
and Muslims begun. The focus of this paper will remain on the Third Crusade (1189
1192 A.D) more specifically the actions of Islam s Warrior Hero Ṣalāḥ ad
DД«n YЕ«suf ibn AyyЕ«b who was better known to the English as Saladin Sultan
of Egypt. How did one individual gain the respect of both his Muslim followers and
his enemies the Catholic Europeans? Throughout history Saladin has been portrayed
as a charismatic, honourable, virtuous and chivalrous man by the historians and
chroniclers of the Middle East and Europe. Even the Europeans who sought to
dislike this man due to his religious affiliations could not, as he encompassed all the
qualities in which a great leader and a good Christian was thought to possess. The
sources produced during the medieval period were formulated by individuals with an
education, these grouped individuals were limited to monks, priests and people of
aristocracy. Due to this limitation it is obvious that the sources obtained will be
biased and could obtain numerous inaccuracies. Because the sources on Saladin are
written from both the perspectives of Catholics and Muslims it must be taken into
consideration of the
The Issue Of Immigration Is Become A Major Debate For...
The issue of immigration has become a major debate for everyone. Although people
argue over the negative impacts of immigrants living in America such as
overcrowding, less jobs due to immigrants taking them, drug trafficking, and
threatening of American culture, immigrants still have a huge impact in the
American society. The United Statesis by far the largest destination for immigrants,
annually receiving over a million legal immigrants and about seven hundred
thousand illegal immigrants. Many people come to the United States to get a better
life for themselves as well as for the education system for their children. Initially, the
United States received about sixty percent of the world s immigrants from 1820 to
1930. Population expansion in developed areas of the world, improved methods of
transportation, and America s desire to populate available space were all factors for
this occurrence. Through the nineteenth century, the United States was in the midst
of agricultural, and industrial expansion. The aspiration for inexpensive, unskilled
labor and the profits made from importing immigrants fueled the movement.
Immigrants were largely responsible for the rapid development of the country and
the economy, their high birth rates increased the U.S. population. Over twelve
million immigrants infiltrated the United States of America from 1892 to 1954
through a small island in New York Harbor called Ellis Island. Throughout the years,
Ellis Island served as a gateway for

Themes In All Quiet On The Western Front
Lost Generation on the Western Front In the novel, All Quiet on the Western
Front, Erich Maria Remarque demonstrates, through the character of Paul Baumer,
how World War I was one of the bloodiest wars in history. With more than 18
million deaths and 23 million wounded, it left a lasting memory to many. Most of
these men were young, so many of the men that came back after the war had
mental issues and were lost with society. Such things like Kemmerich s boots, the
red poppies, and the senselessness of the war itself. All of these teenagers that
took on war at a very young age were known in history as the lost generation . In
the beginning of the war, many of these young soldiers including Paul and his
friends did not know what to expect. As the come into camp they notice all the
little things, such as the butterflies, white clouds, the red poppies in the field, and
as the wind plays with our hair (9). The red poppies in the field symbolizes the
bloody mess the great war gave. To what the great war gave, was nothing. These
men as they were now called lost everything they learned and if they would ever go

The first of the Iron Youth to die was Franz Kemmerich. Kemmerich was the one
who had a horrific death, he was shot in the leg and it was amputated. As
Kemmerich s leg lies under a wire basket (14), he still feels the pain in his foot, and
the boys know that he will die or go back home. Muller, a young man a part of the
Iron Youth, is delighted with the sight of Kemmerich s boots that he asks for them,
but Franz is confused because he still is thinking that he is just fine when he is not.
This all meant that even the boots, such a small thing in the war means so much to
them. Having this pair of boots gave these men a sense of hope and that represents
how lost all these young men

story is inspired by the big game hunting safaris in Africa and South America that
were particularly fashionable among wealthy Americans in the 1920s.

The Columbine Massacre Were They Pushed or Did They Jump What would drive

The Impact of Pirates and of Piracy on the Spanish Empire
When the word pirate is mentioned, many people think of ship carrying men across
the seas as they pillage other ships. While this is true to some extent there was much
more to the lives of the men that were known as pirates. Pirates were mostly men
from French, English or Dutch heritage, and were privateers or merchants. Many of
these men were sanctioned by their government. By the Spanish they were call
piratas or unsanctioned sea raiders, and would have a heavy influence of trade in the
Caribbean and on the Spanish Empire.
The first pirates were known as corsairs and appeared at the end of the 15th and into
the beginning of the 16th century. It was at this time between 1530 60 ... Show more

In an attempt to help protect the colonies and the people that lived there Onerous
pirate taxes were created (Lane 18). This money allowed the Spanish to provide
minimal protection for these colonies. Still the cost for fortification, standing armies
and a navy could not be justified.
Between the years of 1535 and 1547, some sixty six Spanish ships were captured by
French corsairs (Lane 19). Shortly after in the 1550 s, the Spanish came to regret
their passive defense strategy when French corsairs made their most punishing
raids ever on the Spanish West Indies. They descended on colonies like Puerto
Rico, Hispaniola and Cuba, and caused heavy destruction that they never really
recovered from. Finally in the early 1560 s, Spain was forced to react with
expensive long term defenses. Since the Spanish waited so long to do so they not
only lost wealth because of what was captured, but now they also had to spend
money to protect what was left.
Moreover, French corsairs turned to contraband trading. They would go into small
remote Spanish ports and sell to the settlers slaves, cloth and other goods that they
had taken from Spanish ships. The French were not only taking goods from the
Spanish ships, they were making a profit by selling it back to the Spanish. This
would mark the end of the French pirates interfering with Spanish trade for the time
being (Lane 29).
It was the British that followed in their wake often assembling French corsairs that

Ethics are present in households and in communities, which help individual s decide
what is right and wrong, and how to deal with situations. The same ethical
standards that Americans expect from each other and that are taught to our children
should not be left at the door when an employee punches in on the time clock.
Some companies are incorporating ethics into their training. It is a subject that can
go hand in hand with business and when employees and CEO s alike understand
what ethics are about, business can improve (Curry, n.d.). Ethics and equality seem
to work hand in hand with many people in the business world whom realize its
importance. The major problem in the Wal Mart class action lawsuit is that they
failed to see the importance. The basis of the lawsuit is very simple, the women
involved in this unsavory situation feel that their rights as individuals and employees
have been violated. The discrimination at hand led them to be treated differently than
their peers. The women involved in the discrimination lawsuit justly feel that they
have the legal right to be treated the same as any other employee within the
corporation. An organization s values, beliefs, and standards are manifested into its

The On Fossil Fuels And The Amish
As we continue to consume fossil fuels on a scale never seen in human history, we
are faced with the nagging but not imminent question: what is going to happen
when we run out? It s the same question any addict asks themselves, and the way
they respond can affect the rest of their life. It is impossible to forget 2008:
gasoline rose to nearly $4 a gallon, the stock market plummeted, millions lost their
jobs, and Americans and foreigners alike responded in a way that only the fear of
spending more money can motivate. Why are we as a global society so hooked on
fossil fuels? Put simply, we can t live without it. Few people outside of aspiring

Examples Of Self-Regulating Streets
Self Regulating Streets
Self Regulating Streets
1.Explain what is meant by this expression in terms of place making and urban design.
Self regulating streets are streets where urban design, function, place, landscaping,
engineering and urban design can all be implemented to regulate the speed of
vehicles.
Place making involves the implementation of a vision to improve a few major
aspects to ensure the success of urban places, including streets. These three aspects
include quality public realm, way finding and legibility and sense of place which,
among others, go a long way in ensuring the sustainability of self regulating streets.
Sense of place can be explained as the individual s personal perception of a given

Give examples of where and how you think the principle has been successfully
implemented.
The first example of a place where self regulating streets have been implemented is
in Ireland most specifically the seaside town of Youghal in County Cork. This was
the first region to identify the existing link between driver behavior and street
environment back in 1995. This principle of self regulating streets was successfully
implemented using narrow streets and having parking spaces along the streets so as to
reduce traffic congestion. In light traffic conditions, this design has proven to be very
effective.
Dorset Street in the northern part of Dublin also serves as a self regulating street.
Due to its heavy traffic, Dorset Street successfully implemented this principle using a
boulevard type of configuration. Trees were placed along the street to provide an
enclosure.
Both of these examples were successfully implemented as a result of the designers
carrying out vigorous analysis to come up with an optimum design and intervention
tailored to each place, so as to fully solve the issue of motorist behavior and speed

Judaism s Views On Judaism
JUDAISM
First of all, before I begin with my research on Judaism, I did not consider that the
Jews only believes in God. I thought that they accepted every word from the bible and
that even though they have a Jewish calendar and different practices, that the bible
that I use was quite similar with them with both Old Testament and New Testament. I
knew that Judaism was the one of the oldest religions in the world that still exists
today and was recorded in the bible. I had no indication that tells me that they
observed different traditions and there are different branches of Judaism. I also
thought that Judaism was Christianity. Both believe in God, (monotheism) the only
God almighty, the one who created the universe, and because both shared the
Hebrew Scriptures. I also thought that all Jewish men have beard and lovely hair. I
thought that males were black hat and black coat at all times on Shabbath Other
things that I expect was that some of the holidays that Christianity celebrates, the
Jews also celebrates it like Passover, palm Sundays, Easter. Since my religion is
closed to the Judaism faith practices, I thought that they performs a foot washing
ceremony before communion and that they gather on the Sabbath which is Saturday
for worship. I also assumed that not all Jews, but certain Jews kept the kosher. I also
thought that all men covered their heads and during worship or in the temple women
were to cover their heads.

Essay On Counselor Identity
Counselor Identity A National Imperative Critique
The Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education considers
professional identity as one of the eight common core areas for professional counselor
education (CACREP, 2015). Counseling students must understand what it means to
personally develop their identity as a professional counselor, as well as what it means
to belong to a professional organization. Spurgeon (2012) discusses professional
counseling as a professional organization, the historical development of counseling
becoming a professional organization, and challenges for future growth and
development.
Summary
A definite and comprehensive professional identity is essential for counselors to
understand their own identity as Licensed Professional Counselors and communicate
this identity with other professionals and the public. The ability to understand and
communicate this is particularly necessary for people with whom they interact with
on a daily basis. A professional identity concerns both a personal and an

Before starting graduate school I did not know that counseling was a distinct
profession from psychology. I enjoyed learning that counseling was born from the
educational field with a wellness focus rather than a medical focus (Granello

are different from other mental health professionals. For example, we discussed how
psychiatrists and psychologists focus on the biological and psychological factors that
influence mental illness, and social worker seek the environmental factors that
address a person s wellness. Counselors operate in the niche between psychologists
and social workers. I was excited to learn the new opportunities and training available

Filibuster Conclusion
A filibuster is a unique tool used in legislation that obstructs the progress of a bill.
This obstruction of progress can be conducted in a variety of ways, such as talking
a bill to death , or delaying long enough to completely prevent a vote on a bill.
Filibustering can be accomplished by one, or several members of the Senate. In
recent years, the act of filibustering has become increasingly unpopular amongst the
public due to the delay it causes on bill progress in the US Supreme Court, but its
initial purpose came from a more helpful standpoint. The embryonic concept of the
filibuster was created to guarantee that all opinions were heard completely regardless
of their popularity before a bill was voted on. This The filibuster

My research will help by demonstrating the effectiveness or ineffectiveness of the
current Duluth method of BIPP programs with the Latino population. Currently,
social service programs and courts are mandating domestic violence perpetrators to
Batterer intervention prevention programs as a first choice solution to the problem.
However, if the Duluth method is not effective in treating these individuals then a
new approach must be taken. My research can help expand and shape policy by
changing the preferred model used by BIPP programs in Texas and by changing the
viewpoint of social services and courts who mandate these individuals to attend BIPP

Research Question The question that I will ask during this research proposal is: Is the
Duluth Method of Batterer Intervention Prevention Programs an effective treatment
program for the Latino population? The answer this this questions will help shape
standards as to effective treatment options for Latino clients attending BIPP, such as
using a strength based approached to keep them engaged, instead of receiving the
same treatment as other clients. At the end of this study I intend to observe if
Batterer Intervention Programs are effective treatment options for perpetrators of
domestic violence. If this is not an effective method of treatment, then alternatives
will be considered to see how effective they have been at

Robert Cohn Vs Robert Cohn
Moving on to the next character that struggles with his identity, Robert Cohn,
much like Jake, wrestles with the question of is he a bull or is he a steer? While,
unlike Jake, he is capable of sexual relations and has an affair with Brett, Cohn
delivers the ironic statement that it s no life being a steer , hinting at his
insecurity in terms of his masculinity (Hemingway 145). On the surface, it would
appear that Cohn does not have adequate reason to be insecure about who he is as
a person. After all, he suffers no side effects from the war and is able to live his
life as he pleases, dissimilar to Jake. But Cohn is set apart from the others in the
story. Gross brilliantly puts into words just how subtle this differentiation can be
by stating how natural it seems . . . to call Jake Barnes Jake, Mike Campbell Mike,
Bill Gorton Bill, Lady Brett Ashley Brett, and how unnatural . . . to call Robert
Cohn Robert (123). He then follows this up with the assertion that Jake, and
everyone else, calls Cohn Cohn to distance him (Gross 123). Another aspect of this
differentiation results from Cohn s status as the only Jew in the novel. One further
distinction is the idea that Cohn has never known real love. As Jake points out in
the beginning, Cohn was married by the first girl who was nice to him , not a
woman he truly loved (Hemingway 12). Upon meeting Frances, a literary woman
who took a liking to Cohn and wanted to marry him, Cohn fancies that he was sure

Religious intolerance is a major concern in Indonesia. Religious freedom in Indonesia
requires that politicians stop using Islamist fringe groups for their own ends. It also
requires that the government extend official recognition beyond the six currently
recognized religions to other beliefs and abolish a 1965 law on the Prevention of
Misuse or Desecration of Religion (Platzdasch, B. 2011). In 2001, Indonesia decided
to improve their education systems and established a decentralized education system
in hopes to improve their standard of living and decrease corruption in the education
sector. In the past there has been high teacher absences, embezzlement from the
education programs funds, and ultimately, negative relationship between education
funds and enrollments. Overall, the amount of public spending on the education
sector is pointless if the country cannot control the corruption and the embezzlement
that results in low enrollment numbers, Inadequate supply of infrastructure has been
a major concern for investors, because transportation is lacking with railroads and
roadways are in poor conditions. Other areas that are in need of attention include:
water and sanitation, telecommunications, and the power and energy sectors. In
addition, Indonesia developed an extensive air transport network that

The Theme Of Emotions In John Steinbeck s Toy Story
The feeling of being gutted, disbanded, and lonely, and the sickening depression

Toy Story and shows a theme of deep feeling. The aforementioned movie includes
the mysterious backstory behind the father of its main character Andy. One of Pixar

fiction Of Mice and Men, written by author John Steinbecktells the tale of main
characters George and Lennie, two migrant farmers who claw their way through the
world of the 1930 s Great Depression, fueled by a tenacious everlasting bond of
friendship. This virtue perfectly displays the prominent theme of Of Mice and Men,
friendship can be a haven in a heartless world.
The first example is shown when George and Lennie are eating supper by a bonfire
near a river talking about their dream to a brighter future on a farm they will
purchase and eventually get livestock and crops. George says, ...with us it ain t like
that. We got a future. We got someone to talk to that gives a damn about us... and
then Lennie exclaims, because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look
after you, and that s why! (14). The treasured relationship between George and Lennie
perfectly exemplifies the theme of friendship. This is

Middle School Athletics Staffing Essay
Middle School Athletics Staffing
In the business world, each year is different from the other, same goes for the
academic division. It is a fact that people come and people go for all types of
reasons. Change is forever arising, sometimes for the better or worse. Within the
middle school athletics level there are 13 Athletic Directors (AD) positions and 160
or more coaching positions, dependent on each teams participation. AD s and
coaches are paid employees of the district. The AD s supervise the coaches at their
individual school buildings or act as a sports liaison within their assigned school. The
coaches simply coach. Many of our coaches have experience in the sport they are
coaching, but sometimes we need a warm body or parent/volunteer to coach a
team. In the area of Athletics you are always asked to work or volunteer more than
you get paid. In most cases if you put in 40 hours weeks then you are paid for 40
hours. In athletics you may put in 40 hours and are only compensated 15 hours.
The middle school AD position is part time and pays 10 12 hours per week. So you
can imagine the high turnover rate for AD s. Coaches are paid based on their
experience in the sport they are coaching. The coaches is pay is a percentage of the
teacher s contract. It can range from 3 5% of $37,600 and the teacher s contract
varies from year to year. The Athletics Department made a direct observation and
diagnosed several problems identified above which were the high turnover
Using RFID Technology in the Transportation Sector
RFID or radio frequency identification is the name given to the technology that uses
radio waves to transmit data and uniquely identify an animal, person, or thing ( radio
frequency identification, 2013). An RFID system includes a transponder including an
antenna and a chip that can easily store a significant amount of data such as location
details, manufacturer details and product numbers if any. There are three basic types
of the RFIDreaders. Fixed readers with an external antenna which are often used at
the entry points of the yards. Handheld readers are used by personnel moving
through the yards or the space. Then there are mobile readers which are set on the
moving vehicles and moving equipment for increasing accuracy and tracking the
process ( Advantages of RFID in Transportation and Logistics , 2011). In the current
times, radio frequency identification technology has upgraded from anonymity into
applications that are rather used normally and as a consequence has helped in the
acceleration of manufactured materials handling (Want, 2006). There are several
uses of RFID in various sectors. However, this paper will only deal with its uses in
the transportation sector and how effectively this modern technology has helped in
the growth of business and ease for people all over the world. RFID technology has a
number of applications in the domain of transportation including electronic toll
collection (ETC), electronic vehicle registration (EVR), automatic
Need For Extensive Training Working At Heights
When it comes to tree removal, unless you absolutely certain you know what you are
doing, it is essential you hire a professional to handle this service. In addition to the
need for extensive training working at heights requires, there are a number of other
fluctuating circumstances causing potential risks that only a trained professional is
prepared for. Because consumers want to ensure they are spending their money
wisely, one of the most prominent questions asked is when a treeshould be removed?
Ask yourself the following questions:
Do you see extensive damage on the tree from the ground? Elimination of a tree
should occur when at least 50% or more of the tree is damaged. While the tree
deteriorates, it could potentially survive for multiple years. However, its appearance
could become abnormal in addition to its growth.
Do you see vertical seams or cracks in the trunk? These issues, as well as stubs
from dead branches indicate decay is occurring from within the tree. If these issues
are occurring on less than 25% of the circumference of the tree s trunk, the internal
wounds should heal themselves over a period of time. However, if more area of the
trunk is covered, this is indication of severe damage and the tree should be eliminated.
Are the roots able to stay upright on their own? A stable rootsystem can stand upright
on its own, otherwise there are problems. Such problems include decayed, missing,
or dead root systems. The tree could become a potential hazard
Humble And The Mysterious Phantom
Humble and the Mysterious Phantom
Once upon a time there lived a creature that had been sighted to be a scaly monster;
he lived in the land called Shadow Mist. The land was grey, it was so grey it looked
like there was gravel everywhere. I can t even begin to tell you how awful the trees
looked; they looked so brown like they were all painted in mud.
The creature always slept but, even though the people knew this they never
ventured to the land. There was a lizard called Humble, he was a dark green lizard
with scales all over him. He always loved to help out the town s people. The town s
people would always describe him as their rock (tough guy). This town was a
magical and wondrous town it was full of cookies. The air was heavy like
something horrific was about to happen. The town sounded like a slithering simple
snake(whispering). The houses and streets were made of cookies and looked so tasty
which made you want to taste them. Humble s life couldn t be more perfect until...
The next day... petrifying screams were heard all throughout Cookie Town. Not a
soul stirred. There was absolutely nothing, only the trees whistling. It felt so quiet
like everyone was dead. Humble, was wondering where everyone had gone until he
bumped into them. Everyone shouted I think we saw a dragon!! Humble said are
you sure it was a dragon?? I am sure said Lizzy the lizard. Then suddenly, humble
came across a... dead body!! Suddenly, everyone shouted eek!!! Humble said I shall

Descriptive Essay On Costa Rica
Costa Rica
One inescapable fact every tourist will notice when visiting Coast Rica is the lush
green rainforest, abundance of wild animals and unspoiled beaches. The hideous
landscape is home to some of the most amazing animals in Central America such as
jaguars and toucans. The warm turquoise waters are great for surfing even as you
hike across strings of active volcanoes in the tropical paradise. The popular visitor
attractions in Costa Rica include Nosara Beach in Nicoya Peninsula and the Arenal
Volcano Guanacaste province, the country s Gold Coast paradise. With all these
attractions, it no wonder Coast Rica has become one of the most favorite spots for
wedding shoots. The people here are generally pleasant and easy going, thanks to
their positive philosophy.

The Equal Pay Act For Women And Women Working Under
The...
In 1963, President John F. Kennedy signed into effect a landmark legislation that
would guarantee equal pay to both men and women working under the same
employer. However, to this present day, women still only make, on average, 77
cents to every dollar that a male earns. This paper focuses on some of the underlying
problems as to why there is still such a large genderpay discriminationover half a
century later. More specifically, some of the policies maybe could be put in place
and the positive impact(s) each policy could have on women in the work place.
Lastly, we will look at some of the laws that have been in place, and how effective or
ineffective they have been.
Introduction
More than fifty years ago, in 1963, President John F. Kennedy signed landmark
legislation that would guarantee equal pay to both men and women working under
the same employer. The Equal Pay Act was the first in a series of major federal and
state laws that had a profound effect on job opportunities and earnings for women
over the next half century, and laid the foundation for the movement of women into
the paid labor force at unprecedented levels (whitehouse.gov).
However, there is still much more to be done. According to a recent study, American
women today who work full time, year round, are still only paid 77 cents for every
dollar paid to their male counterparts (Kim p.1). Women s median earnings are also
lower in nearly every occupation regardless of whether they work in male dominant
Holococcus Pyogenes Research Paper
Streptococcus Pyogenes is a gram positive facultative anaerobic bacterium. It is
also known as a beta hemolytic group A streptococcus or Lancefield Group A
streptococcus. Streptococci are round, spherical bacteria that grow in pairs or
chains. Most microbiologists will say under the microscope they look like a string
of pearls. S. Pyogenes is the most commonly associated with the strep throat. It is
responsible for several other diseases as well as some post streptococcal infections.
The invention and advances made with antibiotics are greatly decreased the effects
of Streptococcus Pyogenes. Strep Throat is an infection of the tonsils and pharynx.
Its symptoms include: sore throat, high fever, chills, headache, swollen lymph nodes
and trouble swallowing. This disease usually effects school aged children. It is very
contagious, and is spread through close contact with those individuals coughing and
sneezing. Once strep is identified as the pathogen, with a rapid strep test, the doctor
will prescribe a drug in the penicillin family as treatment. Penicillin attacks the cell
wall of the bacteriaas it is trying to replicate. This decreases the amount of new
bacteria forming in the body, giving the immune systemtime to attack the foreign
agent.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pyogenes. This infection is not associated with strep throat. Impetigo is a skin
infection. The bacteria enter a break in the skin. These breaks include: injury, insect
bites or animal bites. It may also be transmitted from an infected individual to an
uninfected individual through direct and indirect contact. Impetigo is characterized
by a blister like rash that is extremely itchy. These blisters burst and scab over.
Treatment is generally to apply a topical antibiotic cream directly on the lesions, but
if the infection is severe enough oral antibiotics will be prescribed. Due to the close
contact at school or day care, school aged children present with this more often than

  • 1. Child Development Theories Essays Writing an essay on the topic of child development theories can be quite challenging due to the vast amount of research and theories available. Firstly, understanding the various theories proposed by renowned psychologists such as Piaget, Vygotsky, and Erikson requires in-depth reading and comprehension. Each theory presents unique perspectives on how children develop cognitively, socially, emotionally, and physically, which necessitates careful analysis and comparison. Furthermore, synthesizing these theories and integrating them into a coherent and cohesive essay requires critical thinking and analytical skills. It's essential to not only explain the key concepts of each theory but also to evaluate their strengths, weaknesses, and real-world implications. Additionally, discussing empirical evidence and research findings that support or challenge these theories adds another layer of complexity to the essay. Moreover, addressing the practical applications of these theories in various settings, such as education, parenting, and clinical practice, requires a nuanced understanding of their implications. Balancing theoretical concepts with practical examples and case studies further enriches the essay but demands extensive research and careful selection of relevant materials. Overall, crafting a comprehensive essay on child development theories entails thorough research, critical analysis, and effective communication of complex ideas. It's a task that demands time, effort, and a deep understanding of psychological concepts and their applications in real-life contexts. Similar essays and much more can be ordered on HelpWriting.net. Cows love you, they are harmless, they look nice, they don t need a litter box, and they keep the grass down. Cows are so trusting that you can t help but lose your heart to them. Where I live, in Yorkshire, there is a herd of cows down the lane. You can stand by the wall any hour of the day or night and pretty soon the cows will all waddle over to stand nearby. They aren t smart enough to know what to do next, but they seem to be happy just to be in your presence. Mired in their contentedness, they will stand there indefinitely. They will listen to your problems and never ask for a thing in return. Cows will be your friends forever, and when you
  • 3. The Diet Pill And Supplement Craze Society today has become a place where appearance is regarded as very important. It is believed that beautiful people are the happiest and most successful and when it comes to weight and physique size matters. Another social norm in our society is smoking. Whether it stems from the ideal that smoking is cool or from mere addiction, smoking has become so common that it is no longer frowned upon generally speaking however being overweight is. Women today especially want to fit into society s perception of what the ideal woman looks like and will do almost anything it seems to gain this satisfaction. From gym memberships, extreme diets and exercise programs to the latest diet pill or supplement craze. Women will endure almost anything to be the ideal weight. Among these conceptions is the idea that smoking can prevent a woman from gaining weight or can assist in keeping the weight off. One familiar mindset is what better way to stay thin than to smoke? and it is a widespread idea. Though smoking can in fact be tied to benefits such as weight control, stress reduction and improved mood, it is still the number one cause of preventable disease and death. Even though society has heard of and is aware of the dangers and health risks adjoining smoking it is still often used as a tactic to control weight especially among women. In this paper I am going to discuss the article Differential Effects of a Body Image Exposure Session on Smoking Urge Between Physically Active

Failure to obtain consent and an offer of incentive for participation indicated that PHS doctors were indeed performing immoral and unethical study on human beings with total lack of human rights and life. But most of these individuals in the study had no idea that their rights were violated. Since, this experiment went on for many years no one knew any better since they thought everything that was happening during this study was what they were suppose to experience (Timeline, 2008). For 40 year experimentation, a high price had been paid for this knowledge. Men had died; wives and their children had been infected because of the science and research (CDC, 2008). Little imagination is needed to ascribe racial attitudes toward the white government officials who took part in running this experiment but what about all the African Americans who took part with them. The experiments name came from a Tuskegee Institute that was a black university founded by Booker T. Washington. The affiliated hospital gave the PHS its medical facility to use during these studies that was a predominately black facility. Most of the individuals that were working on the experiment were black doctors and nurses

I along with 50 other new recruits were herded on to a bus and told to put our heads down as they drove around for what seemed like hours. The recruiters used this as a disorienting and scare tactic, so we would have no idea where we were. Up until the impact of feminism in the 1970s, in the UK at least, it is clear that most of the successful sitcoms featured leading male characters (Hancock, Steptoe, Dad s Army, Till Death Do Us Part, Porridge etc.). Women were more likely to feature in ensemble casts The Rag Trade, Are You Being Served? This was also a function of the employment opportunities for women. Circulatory Shock Circulatory shock is a syndrome of widespread cellular hypoxia, triggered by a systemic alteration of perfusion and delivery and/or utilization of tissue oxygen, eventually causing end organ dysfunction and death [53]. It can be subdivided into 4 distinct categories according to its primary pathophysiological mechanism, namely cardiogenic, hypovolemic, obstructive and distributive [54]. In the first 3 types, perfusion has changed as a consequence of the cardiac output decrease, whereas distributive types of shock are related to a primary dysfunction of the resistive component of the cardiovascular system. Various contributing mechanisms have been identified, including the negative inotropic effects of different circulating factors, especially cytokines (TNFО±, IL 1ОІ and IL 6), lysozyme c and endothelin 1, disturbances of intracellular calcium trafficking within cardiac myocytes, alterations of myocardial microvascular blood flow, mitochondrial abnormalities and autonomic dysfunction [71 73]. There are various effects which may be responsible for the toxic actions of peroxynitrite on the heart, including myocardial cell death, either by caspase 3 dependent apoptosis [74], or PARP mediated necrosis [75]. A direct correlation linking the degree of myocardial PARP activation and the severity of cardiac functional alterations has been established in humans with septic shock [76]. Myocardial contractility can also be impaired by peroxynitrite due to disturbance in regulatory mechanism of intracellular calcium through the inactivation of SERCA2A [77], by altering different myofibrillar proteins including actin, myosin [78] and alpha actinin [79], by interrupting myofibrillar energetics through inactivation of the myofibrillar isoform of creatine kinase [80] and by activating matrix metalloproteinases [81], which promotes contractile failure by cleaving key sarcomeric proteins including troponin and myosin light chain
  • 11. Compare And Contrast Children And Adults Most people will say that the best days of your life are going to be during your youth, where you didn t have to worry about anything and had no responsibilities. When I was a young child, I remember wanting to be a grown up so bad that I got mad at my parents because they treated me like a kid. To this day, I still do not understand why kids wantto grow up and be adults so quickly. Now that I m slowly turning into an adult, I can tell that kids have it way easier than adults do. Being a child is probably the best thingthat can ever happen to you. When you re a child you have nothing to worry about. Children have responsibilities that only involve housework or school. They have to wash dishes, clean their rooms, make the bed, and take out the trash. These are called chores, and most normal kids hate doing chores. These responsibilities are mainly at home jobs, and they have more that involve schoolwork. A child is responsible for finishing class and homework when the teacher asks them to and are also held responsible to be the best kids they can be at school. She teaches classes every Friday and Saturday to children ranging from 2 14 years old. I observed her multiple times and recorded 6 hours of observations. After talking to Penny Lane, I found out she did gymnastics as a child at her local fitness center. She was a student for there for about 8 years, while growing up. Then while she was in high schoolshe was asked to teach for students at her fitness center. She enjoyed it so much that when she moved up to Bellingham, she asked the fitness center in town if she could teach some lessons. At the time, no one was teachinggymnastics and the fitness center said that she could teach. She was able to create her own lesson plans and has been working at this location for 2 years. This is how she was able to get involved with this type of work. She did mention a few struggles with the job such as the fitness center does not have a lot of funding and that sometimes hinders the lessons and she explained that older students tend to drop out and go somewhere else. When I asked her how she felt about her work she said that it was easy and fun. She really enjoys working with kids and feels comfortable teaching gymnastics. She wants to keep this job throughout her schooling because she wants to be an elementary school teacher once she graduates from college. She doesn t make very much money so, I would say based off of my observations
  • 13. Planning A Youth Centre Within A Suburb Of 5000 People And... 1. INTRODUCTION Needs Assessment (NA) is a systematic set of approaches that is used to establish the needs of a community by identifying; at risk groups, risk factors associated with the health and establishing resources available in the community that can be used to mitigate the health problem (Lebron et al. 20016, p. 111). NA therefore, requires community participation, is conducted before planning an intervention and is used to tailor interventions that suit the target population (Lebron et al. 20016, p. 111). This report will be focusing on approaches a local government will use to establish a youth centre in a suburb of 5000 people and will focus on: 1.Community Profile 2.2 Secondary Data sources 3.2 Approaches of youth engagement and their strengths and limitations 2. COMMUNITY PROFILE There are certain components of the youth community the council needs to consider when planning a NA of the youth centre: demographics, marginalised/minority groups, social economic status (SES), cultural differences and geography, this will enable the council to build a community youth profile (Jack Holt 2008,p.54 55). First the council needs to know the range of age and gender of the youth in the community (Jack Holt 2008, p.55). This demographic information will help the council when establishing the youth centre i.e. know what to include in the centre based on the gender and age differences (Jack Holt 2008, p.54 55). Although people argue over the negative impacts of immigrants living in America such as overcrowding, less jobs due to immigrants taking them, drug trafficking, and threatening of American culture, immigrants still have a huge impact in the American society. The United Statesis by far the largest destination for immigrants, annually receiving over a million legal immigrants and about seven hundred thousand illegal immigrants. Many people come to the United States to get a better life for themselves as well as for the education system for their children. Initially, the United States received about sixty percent of the world s immigrants from 1820 to 1930. Population expansion in developed areas of the world, improved methods of transportation, and America s desire to populate available space were all factors for this occurrence. Through the nineteenth century, the United States was in the midst of agricultural, and industrial expansion. This money allowed the Spanish to provide minimal protection for these colonies. Still the cost for fortification, standing armies and a navy could not be justified. Between the years of 1535 and 1547, some sixty six Spanish ships were captured by French corsairs (Lane 19). Shortly after in the 1550 s, the Spanish came to regret their passive defense strategy when French corsairs made their most punishing raids ever on the Spanish West Indies. They descended on colonies like Puerto Rico, Hispaniola and Cuba, and caused heavy destruction that they never really recovered from. Finally in the early 1560 s, Spain was forced to react with expensive long term defenses. Since the Spanish waited so long to do so they not only lost wealth because of what was captured, but now they also had to spend money to protect what was left. Moreover, French corsairs turned to contraband trading. They would go into small remote Spanish ports and sell to the settlers slaves, cloth and other goods that they had taken from Spanish ships. The French were not only taking goods from the Spanish ships, they were making a profit by selling it back to the Spanish. This would mark the end of the French pirates interfering with Spanish trade for the time being (Lane 29). While, unlike Jake, he is capable of sexual relations and has an affair with Brett, Cohn delivers the ironic statement that it s no life being a steer , hinting at his insecurity in terms of his masculinity (Hemingway 145). On the surface, it would appear that Cohn does not have adequate reason to be insecure about who he is as a person. After all, he suffers no side effects from the war and is able to live his life as he pleases, dissimilar to Jake. But Cohn is set apart from the others in the story. Gross brilliantly puts into words just how subtle this differentiation can be by stating how natural it seems . . . to call Jake Barnes Jake, Mike Campbell Mike, Bill Gorton Bill, Lady Brett Ashley Brett, and how unnatural . . . to call Robert Cohn Robert (123). He then follows this up with the assertion that Jake, and everyone else, calls Cohn Cohn to distance him (Gross 123). Another aspect of this differentiation results from Cohn s status as the only Jew in the novel. One further distinction is the idea that Cohn has never known real love. As Jake points out in the beginning, Cohn was married by the first girl who was nice to him , not a woman he truly loved (Hemingway 12). Upon meeting Frances, a literary woman who took a liking to Cohn and wanted to marry him, Cohn fancies that he was sure he loved her
