After being expelled from school at the age of eight, Arlt became an autodidact and worked at all
sorts of different odd jobs before landing a job on at a local newspaper: as clerk at a bookstore,
apprentice to a tinsmith, painter, mechanic, welder, manager in a brick factory, and dock worker. In
1935 he spent nearly a year writing as he traveled throughout Spain and North Africa, on the eve of
the Spanish Civil War. I was blown away by the novel mainly because of Arlt's use of language. For
example, Remo Erdosain (a character at least partially based on Arlt's own life) often recalls his
abusive father and how little if any support he would give him. Silvio's family is very poor; he's a

Analogues in English literature are those who avoid literary 'respectability' by writing about the poor,
the criminal and the mad: writers like William Burroughs, Iceberg Slim, and Irvine Welsh.

come from. Throughout the novel Silvio hangs in an exasperating balance: the wish to make quick
money to bring his mother and sister out of poverty and that of giving meaning to his life--that is, I
think, finding an outlet, any outlet, for self-expression and fulfillment. But then you think about it
and little by little begin to see what it was all about. I was blown away by the novel mainly because

even a chapter in which the main character Silvio Astier is expelled from the military academy he's
attending and, unable or unwilling to return home and face his family, goes to the city and checks
into a cheap hotel with weird results, much like Holden Caulfield does.

  • 2. He mixes slang with scientific or intellectual words, neologisms with archaic terms, ready made phrases with poetic metaphors of his own. When I read Sallinger's masterpiece I noted both works share common themes and general tone. He opens up his ear to the whole language of Latin America and Spain. The message is clear: in a society where culture is deeply tied to the economic quality, the social barrier becomes impenetrable. Silvio's family is very poor; he's a fatherless working-class kid whose life ambitions are to become the ultimate inventor or the greatest robber who ever lived (in no particular order) but is constantly frustrated through the novel; this drives him to depression and suicidal ideation. You pick up the book from the floor and apologize because you realize that Arlt's point was something else all together. I thought about Jorge Luis Borges and Julio Cortazar and was surprised that Onetti had not mentioned them as being close to genius. What followed were a series of short stories and plays in which Arlt pursued his vision of bizarre, half-mad, alienated characters pursuing insane quests in a landscape of urban chaos. And you also realize that Silvio was much more complex than you thought. Each one is as unique as a real person, and each one contributes in their own inimitable way to the events that occur. Arlt used these columns to comment, in his characteristically forthright and unpretentious style, on the peculiarities, hypocrisies, strangeness and beauty of everyday life in Argentina's capital. You pick up the book from the floor and apologize because you realize that Arlt's point was something else all together. Each one is as unique as a real person, and each one contributes in their own inimitable way to the events that occur. I do not have words, I cannot find words, to ask for mercy. There is no 'type' in here, no character just filling a slot. It was astonishing. The language might be a bit baroque at times, but it is not literary at all. Harsh reality pushes Silvio to deal with the worst of urban Buenos Aires: grotesque characters for whom there is nothing beyond money or satisfying their crudest sensual needs. I do not have words, I cannot find words, to ask for mercy. I made a mental note to pick up something by Arlt, but then, as most of my mental notes go, I forgot about it. It consists of 4 episodes in a young poor boy's life - his glorious dreams of being a bandit, the harsh reality of horrible jobs - and what characters this guy writes. Onetti praised Arlt in a way that made it hard not to get the book. At the time of his death, Arlt was hoping to be sent to the United States as a correspondent. Onetti praised Arlt in a way that made it hard not to get the book. After being expelled from school at the age of eight, Arlt became an autodidact and worked at all sorts of different odd jobs before landing a job on at a local newspaper: as clerk at a bookstore, apprentice to a tinsmith, painter, mechanic, welder, manager in a brick factory, and dock worker. In 1935 he spent nearly a year writing as he traveled throughout Spain and North Africa, on the eve of the Spanish Civil War. I was blown away by the novel mainly because of Arlt's use of language. For example, Remo Erdosain (a character at least partially based on Arlt's own life) often recalls his abusive father and how little if any support he would give him. Silvio's family is very poor; he's a fatherless working-class kid whose life ambitions are to become the ultimate inventor or the greatest robber who ever lived (in no particular order) but is constantly frustrated through the novel; this drives him to depression and suicidal ideation. Arlt used these columns to comment, in his characteristically forthright and unpretentious style, on the peculiarities, hypocrisies, strangeness and beauty of everyday life in Argentina's capital. But then you think about it and little by little begin to see what it was all about. I thought of the parties they went to, the parties in the city, the parties in the city parks lit with torches bright as the sun in the flowering gardens, and my poverty fell from my hands. Arlt is a total expert in crumbling reality, a reality that, to his view, is sad and nasty.
