chemical company in Northern Spain uses mobile ion
exchange system to meet water quality needs
without capital expenditure
challenge
A chemical company in northern Spain uses process
water for the rinsing of fibers when making specialty
tissue wipes. When a new product was developed,
especially catering to the needs of the Electronics
industry, it needed to be rinsed with water containing
very low concentration of sodium, specifically around <
6 ppm Na+.
This new specialist wipe was only on the production line
for a week each month, and tests needed to be carried
out to decide what levels of Na+ must be maintained in
the water to achieve the desired level in the product.
Since the existing water treatment plant could not
produce such water, the company needed to find a
solution, as investing in a new capital system was not a
sound option.
solution
SUEZ was asked if such a system could be provided to
the customer to meet the strict specifications. Due to
the temporary nature of the job, it was quickly decided
that the use of a MobileFlow* Demineralizer (DI) would
be the most suitable application, as its small footprint
meant it could be easily placed near the existing water
treatment plant. Also as the ion exchange resin trailer
would be regenerated at the SUEZ facility, the customer
could avoid any chemical handling issues.
From the water analysis, it was calculated that a
MobileFlow DI trailer would have a run length of
502,000 g (1,900 m3
) before it was exhausted. It was
also decided that the trial would need one trailer
producing demineralized water at 11,000 gpm (40
m3
/h) to reduce the Na+ concentration to the required
<6ppm, within the loop. After the resin, onboard the
trailer was exhausted, a second trailer could be put
online to maintain continuous production.
By gradually changing the flow rate of water through
the trailer, the concentration of Na+ within the loop
could be altered, making it easy to find the most
efficient concentration for the product. Initially, a
one-week trial was decided.
At the agreed date, the two MobileFlow DI trailers
arrived at the customer site, in Spain, and were
commissioned by a SUEZ Field Service
Representative (FSR), a specially trained degreed
engineer. After a short rinse, the units were
producing up to 11,000 gpm (40 m3
/hr) of
demineralized water at a quality well within the
customer requirements.
The FSR was in charge of operating the trailers and
monitoring the feed and the product water. It was
here the experience and control of the FSR allowed
the altering of the system to attain the optimum
quality of water needed by the customer.
results
The trial completed according to plan, and the plant
manager was very pleased by the response to this
special application. The pilot system provided much

needed information and ultra-pure water at a flow and
quality well within the testing requirement.
The success of trial meant the chemical company did
not need to make a capital investment in new
permanent equipment. Instead, the customer is
confident in the service supplied by SUEZ and has
thus called upon the services of the MobileFlow
trailers whenever there has been a need to lower the
sodium concentration of the loop during the
production of the specialty wipe.
