The document discusses the Standardised Measurement Approach (SMA) for operational risk capital requirements proposed by the Basel Committee. It analyzes key aspects of the SMA methodology and proposes alternatives. Specifically, it identifies limits around the inclusion of loss data, qualitative asymmetry in loss histories, and flexibility in defining loss history depth. It proposes aligning both business indicator and loss component histories to a minimum 10-year period. It also discusses limits around the undefined de-minimis threshold for loss data collection and proposes calibrating it based on materiality and banks' risk appetites.

The document discusses specialist opinions on the Basel Committee's proposed Standardised Measurement Approach (SMA) for calculating operational risk capital requirements. It outlines several concerns raised by the market, including that the SMA may reduce incentives for banks to improve operational risk management and governance. Critics argue the SMA is an oversimplified approach that is insensitive to banks' risk profiles and management efforts. Supporters note the SMA achieves Basel Committee objectives of increased capital charges and comparability, but some specialists believe the SMA risks deteriorating operational risk management practices.

This document reports on the development of a theoretical and empirical model for valuing trademarks in corporate restructuring situations. It presents a model where trademark value is a function of sales, context (liquidation or ongoing concern), scope of use, and other factors. Econometric analysis of trademark values in bankruptcy cases finds that liquidation values are only 13.58% of going concern values on average. The model and findings are applied to sample acquisition and bankruptcy reorganization cases.
The document summarizes the Fundamental Review of the Trading Book (FRTB), which establishes new capital requirements for market risk. It outlines the standardized approach and internal models approach, both of which involve calculating expected shortfall and stressed value-at-risk. Banks will need to store and process significantly more market data to meet the new requirements, which are estimated to increase median capital requirements by 22% and weighted average capital requirements by 40%. Technical challenges include automating extensive data gathering, pricing, and reporting to support the new risk measurement approaches and capital calculations.

This document discusses the 1940 collapse of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge in Washington state. Known as "Galloping Gertie" due to its violent vertical oscillations in windy conditions, the suspension bridge collapsed just four months after opening when winds of 64 km/h caused it to display both vertical and torsional oscillations. The vertical oscillations were an example of forced harmonic motion where the deck motion matched the sinusoidal force of the wind, with frequency and amplitude increasing as the wind speed matched the bridge's natural frequency. The oscillations then suddenly changed to a torsional twisting motion that persisted for 45 minutes before the bridge collapsed.
The document summarizes research on the impact of childhood disabilities on families. It finds that while disabilities can increase demands on families' time and resources, families also experience personal and spiritual growth. While some differences exist based on specific diagnoses, caregivers of children with various conditions experience similar impacts. Research shows that childhood disabilities are associated with increased stress and depression for parents. However, factors like child behavior problems and care needs, rather than just the diagnosis, are better predictors of negative family outcomes. Marital adjustment and overall family functioning also influence stress levels, and many families of children with disabilities function well. Parental self-efficacy and coping styles further impact outcomes.

Santander announced a €7.5 billion accelerated bookbuild to boost its capital ratios. This addresses Santander's standalone capital needs and corrects distortions from its prior dividend commitment, but does not necessarily pave the way for mergers and acquisitions. The capital increase will dilute earnings per share by around 2% but normalize Santander's dividend policy. The report models a potential combination with Bankia and finds cost, funding, and capital synergies could generate double-digit returns on investment. However, the capital increase alone may not be sufficient to fund major acquisitions, which could require additional capital raising.

This document discusses modern approaches to measuring market risk for banks. It describes value at risk (VAR) models, which estimate potential losses over a given period at a certain confidence level, usually 1% or 5%. The document provides an example of calculating VAR using the variance-covariance method for a portfolio with two asset classes. It also briefly mentions stress testing as another modern approach to measure market risk. Overall, the document outlines how VAR models have become important tools for banks to quantify and manage their exposure to market risk.
The document summarizes key changes in the Basel Committee's revised market risk framework, known as Fundamental Review of the Trading Book (FRTB). It introduces more complex capital calculations under the internal models approach, with requirements for multiple scenario analyses and risk factor combinations that significantly increase processing needs. It also requires clearer position classification and metadata for regulatory capital calculations. Banks will need enhanced data management and risk aggregation capabilities to integrate information across business units. The substantial technology impacts suggest a long-term, flexible implementation approach rather than short-term minimum compliance.

This document discusses the debate around using the EU budget for economic stabilization. It provides an overview of current proposals, including the European Investment Stabilization Function and a euro area budgetary instrument for competitiveness and convergence. Specific risk sharing schemes are examined, including one based on compensating countries for export shocks. While risk sharing and risk reduction can complement each other, combining them poses challenges around enforcement. There is academic agreement that a central fiscal capacity is needed, but political agreement remains divided due to moral hazard concerns. The current strategy is to establish a small instrument focused on convergence and competitiveness that could expand over time.

The document discusses how a recent change in banking regulation requires banks to hold capital to cover pension risk, including equity risk in pension portfolios. This represents a substantial increase in capital requirements for UK banks due to the large equity allocations in pension schemes. Implementing a volatility-controlled equity benchmark with downside protection through options could significantly reduce capital requirements by lowering equity risk, while maintaining return expectations. The capital reduction benefits are greater when pension liabilities are more hedged through interest rate risk management.
The document provides an overview of a partnership between Antero Midstream Partners LP and Antero Resources Corporation. It contains forward-looking statements regarding future plans, strategies, objectives, and anticipated financial and operating results. These statements are based on certain assumptions and are subject to risks and uncertainties that could cause actual results to differ materially. The ability to make future distributions is substantially dependent on Antero Resources' development and drilling plan, which is dependent on its annual capital budget approval.
This document discusses a project that used four macroeconomic models to analyze the impacts of implementing the NGFS climate scenarios in France. The models showed different economic impacts ranging from a 1.5% gain to a 1% loss in GDP from 2020-2050. Key factors explaining the differences included how the models represented monetary policy, crowding out of green investments, and debt capacity. While the impacts were limited, the analysis was unable to ensure climate targets would be met and had limitations in representing transition risks. Further sensitivity analysis could provide more understanding of the models' behaviors.

Independent Study - College of Wooster Research (2023-2024) FDI, Culture, Glo...AntoniaOwensDetwiler
"Does Foreign Direct Investment Negatively Affect Preservation of Culture in the Global South? Case Studies in Thailand and Cambodia."
Do elements of globalization, such as Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), negatively affect the ability of countries in the Global South to preserve their culture? This research aims to answer this question by employing a cross-sectional comparative case study analysis utilizing methods of difference. Thailand and Cambodia are compared as they are in the same region and have a similar culture. The metric of difference between Thailand and Cambodia is their ability to preserve their culture. This ability is operationalized by their respective attitudes towards FDI; Thailand imposes stringent regulations and limitations on FDI while Cambodia does not hesitate to accept most FDI and imposes fewer limitations. The evidence from this study suggests that FDI from globally influential countries with high gross domestic products (GDPs) (e.g. China, U.S.) challenges the ability of countries with lower GDPs (e.g. Cambodia) to protect their culture. Furthermore, the ability, or lack thereof, of the receiving countries to protect their culture is amplified by the existence and implementation of restrictive FDI policies imposed by their governments.
My study abroad in Bali, Indonesia, inspired this research topic as I noticed how globalization is changing the culture of its people. I learned their language and way of life which helped me understand the beauty and importance of cultural preservation. I believe we could all benefit from learning new perspectives as they could help us ideate solutions to contemporary issues and empathize with others.
