 Calculation of metabolizable energy using in vivo (bio
assay)trials
 Twelve weeks old 45 Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) were housed in 15 cages
 Five experimental feeds were assigned to 15 groups of birds with three replicates
 One week was allocated for five type of feeds
 preliminary period extended for 3 days
 Samples of excreta collected from each replicate group during four consecutive days
 Analyze dry matter(DM), acid insoluble ash (AIA), and gross energy content(GE) of feed and
excreta
 Gross energy content of feed and dried excreta samples were measured using bomb calorimeter
(IKA C 700Calorimeter)
 Metabolizable energy values of the eighteen feed samples were calculated using following equation

 All commercially produced poultry feeds contained low amount metabolizable energy than
NRC recommendations
 It was not depend on the brand of feed
 Value difference of feed with recommendation change according to the type of feed( broiler or
layer feed)

 Commercial poultry feeds ME values significant with (P<0.05) NRC values
 There is association between NRC and commercial poultry feedsBut those two methods give
approximately accurate values for the evaluating energy of compound feeds of poultry.
 New researches should be directed to need various needs of birds in various conditions
 Such as different phase of growth, genetic and processing of feed.
 Metabolizable energy estimation using regression equation method not
similar to values obtained using with the calculation using feeding trials
 Regression equation methods is more effective than calculating using
feeding trials
