Objectives
• The scientific aim of the EnviroGRIDS project is to assemble
an observation system of the Black Sea catchment that will
address several GEO Societal Benefit Areas within a
changing climate framework. This system will incorporate a
shared information system that operates on the boundary
of scientific/technical partners, stakeholders and the
public. It will contain an early warning system able to
inform in advance decision-makers and the public about
risks to human health, biodiversity and ecosystems
integrity, agriculture production or energy supply caused
by climatic, demographic and land cover changes on a 50-
year time horizon.

Beyond state-of-the-art:

• EnviroGRIDS is clearly going beyond the state
of the art in the Black Sea region by adopting
a catchment approach and by tackling several
societal benefits areas together. By using the
most powerful computer network of the
world it is clearly showing the direction on
how to analyse the increasing amount of
global data made available throughout the
planet.

Beyond state-of-the-art:

• It is bringing crucial information in a relatively
data-poor region on future scenarios of
expected climate, demographic and land
cover changes. Based on the outputs of these
scenarios it is building geoprocessing services

connected back to the GEOSS.

The goals are to expand storage options for Dataverse, integrate curation workflows, and connect Dataverse to national research data infrastructure. SC1 - Hangout 2: The Open PHACTS pilot

Big Data Europe is a EU funded Horizon2020 project and will undertake the foundational work for enabling European companies to build innovative multilingual products and services based on semantically interoperable, large-scale, multi-lingual data assets and knowledge, available under a variety of licenses and business models. The Open PHACTS Discovery Platform is bringing together pharmacological data resources in an integrated, interoperable infrastructure, and has been developed to reduce barriers to drug discovery in industry, academia and for small businesses. The first round of pilots for the Big Data Europe project is about to enter the evaluation phase. This also holds for the Societal Challenge 1: Health. For this challenge the Open PHACTS foundation, Manchester University and the VU Amsterdam are working on the Open PHACTS docker and its integration with the Big Data Europe infrastructure. This presentation will give you: - a general overview of the infrastructure and the status of the generic components that are being developed - an outline of the Societal Challenge and the rationale for the pilot a look into the future pilot options The intended audience are people acquainted with basic development tools like Docker and GitHub with an interest in Big Data and Drug Discovery.

This work is about how both private enterprise and government wish to improve their data value and how they deal with this issue. The talk summarizes the way of thinking about Big Data, Open Data and their use by organizations or individuals. Big Data is explained from collecting, storing, analyzing and put in value. This data is collected from numerous sources including sensor networks, government data holdings, company market databases, and public profiles on social networking sites. Organizations use many data analytical techniques to study both structured and unstructured data. Due to the volume, velocity and variety of data, some specific techniques have been developed. MapReduce, Hadoop and other related as RHadoop are trending topic nowadays. Data which come from government must be open. Every day more and more cities and countries are opening their data. Open Data is then presented as a specific case of public data with a special role in Smartcity. The main goal of Big and Open Data in Smartcity is to develop systems which can be useful for citizens. In this sense RMap (Mapa de Recursos) is shown as an Open Data application, an open system for Madrid City Council, avalaible for smarthphones and totally developed by the researching group G-TeC (www.tecnologiaUCM.es).

Block-level Storage is widely used to support heavy workloads. It can be directly accessed by the operating system, but it faces some durability issues, hardware limitations and performance degradation in geographically distributed systems. Object-based Storage Device (OSD) is a data storage concept widely used to support write-once-read-many (WORM) systems. Because OSD contains data, metadata and an unique identifier, it becomes very powerful and customizable. OSDs are ideal for solving the increasing problems of data growth and resilience requirements while mitigating costs. This paper describes a scalable storage architecture that uses OSD from a distributed P2P Cloud Storage system and delivers a Block-level Storage layer to the user. This architecture combines the advantages of the replication, reliability, and scalability of a OSD on commodity hardware with the simplicity of raw block for data-intensive workload. We retrieve data from the OSD in a set of blocks called buckets, allowing read-ahead operations to improve the performance of the raw block layer. Through this architecture we show the possibility of using OSD on the back end and deliver a storage layer based on raw blocks with better performance to the end user. We evaluated the proposed architecture based on the cache behavior to understand non-functional properties. Experiments were performed with different cache sizes. High throughput performance was measured for heavy workloads at the two storage layers.

Research work published on the 9th International Conference on Cloud Computing and Services Science (CLOSER 2019) held at Heraklion, Crete. The combination of Edge Computing devices and Cloud Computing resources brings the best of both worlds: Data aggregation closer to the source and scalable resources to grow the network on demand. However, the ability to leverage each time more powerful edge nodes to decentralize data processing and aggregation is still a significant challenge for both industry and academia. In this work, we extend the Garua platform to analyze the impact of a model for data aggregation in a global scale smart grid application dataset. The platform is extended to support global data aggregators that are placed nearly to the Edge nodes where data is being collected. This way, it is possible to aggregate data not only at the edge of the network but also pre-process data at nearby geographic areas, before sending data to be aggregated globally by global centralization nodes. The results of this work show that the implemented testbed application, through the usage of edge node aggregation, data aggregators geographically distributed and messaging windows, can achieve collection rates above 400 million measurements per second.

Validation can also serve as curation process to improve discovery on registries [1][2] or for certification purposes [3]. This session will provide an overview and a demo of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) Validation tools. The participants will understand how to invoke a test and install the tools in their own environment. The validation tools are used to test servers, data and clients. The tests can be customized to not only test implementations against OGC standards but also community profiles. The validation engine and the tests are available as open source in GitHub. An e-Infrastructure is a distributed network of service nodes, residing on multiple sites and managed by one or more organizations allowing scientists residing at distant places to collaborate. They may offer a multiplicity of facilities as-a-service, supporting data sharing and usage at different levels of abstraction. E-Infrastructures can have different implementations (Andronico et al 2011). A major distinction is between (i) Data e-Infrastructures, i.e. digital infrastructures promoting data sharing and consumption to a community of practice (e.g. MyOcean, Blanc 2008) and (ii) Computational e-Infrastructures, which support the processes required by a community of practice using GRID and Cloud computing facilities (e.g. Candela et al. 2013). A more recent type of e-Infrastructure is the Hybrid Data Infrastructure (HDI) (Candela et al. 2010), i.e. a Data and Computational e-Infrastructure that adopts a delivery model for data management, in which computing, storage, data and software are made available as-a-Service. HDIs support, for example, data transfer, data harmonization and data processing workflows. Hybrid Data e-Infrastructures have already been used in several European and international projects (e.g. i-Marine 2011; EuBrazil OpenBio 2011) and their exploitation is growing fast supporting new projects and initiatives, e.g. Parthenos, Ariadne, Descramble. A particular HDI, named D4Science (Candela et al. 2009), has been used by communities of practice in the fields of biodiversity conservation, geothermal energy monitoring, fisheries management, and culture heritage. This e-Infrastructure hosts models and resources by several international organizations involved in these fields. Its capabilities help scientists to access and manage data, reuse data and models, obtain results in short time and share these results with other colleagues.

The implementation of the INSPIRE Directive in Europe and similar efforts around the globe to develop spatial data infrastructures and global systems of systems have been focusing largely on the adoption of agreed technologies, standards, and specifications to meet the (systems) interoperability challenge. Addressing the key scientific challenges of humanity in the 21st century requires however a much increased inter-disciplinary effort, which in turn makes more complex demands on the type of systems and arrangements needed to support it. This paper analyses the challenges for inter-disciplinary interoperability using the experience of the EuroGEOSS research project. It argues that inter-disciplinarity requires mutual understanding of requirements, methods, theoretical underpinning and tacit knowledge, and this in turn demands for a flexible approach to interoperability based on mediation, brokering and semantics-aware, cross-thematic functionalities. The paper demonstrates the implications of adopting this approach and charts the trajectory for the evolution of current spatial data infrastructures.

Objectives • The scientific aim of the EnviroGRIDS project is to assemble an observation system of the Black Sea catchment that will address several GEO Societal Benefit Areas within a changing climate framework. This system will incorporate a shared information system that operates on the boundary of scientific/technical partners, stakeholders and the public. It will contain an early warning system able to inform in advance decision-makers and the public about risks to human health, biodiversity and ecosystems integrity, agriculture production or energy supply caused by climatic, demographic and land cover changes on a 50- year time horizon. 2 www.envirogrids.cz www.envirogrids.net

Beyond state-of-the-art: • EnviroGRIDS is clearly going beyond the state of the art in the Black Sea region by adopting a catchment approach and by tackling several societal benefits areas together.
