EMPLOYMENT HISTORY
UKCloud, Corsham (formerly Skyscape Cloud Services)
Infrastructure Architect (cloud services), October 2014-Present
Lead architect delivering an OpenStack platform for UKCloud.
In six months my team of three has delivered two OpenStack regions to support the UK
Public sector. In the two months we have delivered further value; major upgrade to both
regions, additional connectivity options, enhanced customer experience monitoring,
spiked DBaaS, moved much code to ansible, scaled hardware, passed external
penetration tests and more. https://www.redhat.com/en/about/press-releases/ukcloud-
creates-open-source-alternative-uk-public-sector-red-hat-openstack-platform.
Lead architect designing and implementing Hadoop as a Service for UKCloud.
The solution is based on VMware BDE coupled with vCloud. I co-authored a techncial
case study which explains the technical aspects of the solution, presented at both
VMworlds 2015 and sat on a panel with VMware and Hortonworks discussing virtualising
big data

Eduserv ltd, Bath
Solutions Architect (cloud services), March 2012-October 2014
During this role I was involved in three large scale projects.
Co-designed and built a scalable cloud platform based on VMware vCloud director
achieving IL2 accreditation. Delivered a tier 1 storage solution and implemented inter-
site disaster recovery based on Zerto. During this role I also looked to finesse the
platform capabilities and provide greater guidance to both the support teams and the
customers about the platform capabilities.
Lead architect for the design and implementation of the Science and Technologies
Research Councils VMware vCloud infrastructure which makes up a significant portion of
a hybrid cloud, offering access to multiple compute resource in vCloud, AWS and Lotus.
It was an incredibly interesting project requiring a fundamental shift in the status quo for
enterprise cloud platforms. High availability was not a primary concern but instead high
performance and flexibility. This mentality posed some serious architectural challenges
to overcome.
Consultant with a large web application providing single sign-on services to public sector,
HE/FE and some commercial organisations such as BP. The consultancy piece saw the
development of a 3 year modernisation strategy with the short term goal to reduce
current risks to the infrastructure and a long term goal to make the application agile
enough to cope with business growth and strategic direction based on market demands.
During the role I also looked at other smaller projects such as the development of an IL2
to AWS gateway, in-depth performance review of existing storage, automation of
internal services such as customer on-boarding including the automation of firewall
creation.
Eduserv ltd, Bath
Senior Technical Delivery Analyst, August 2009- Sept 2011
I provided a general escalation point for other team members as part an ITIL aligned
operational support group. This helped me mentor team members whilst allowing me to
come into contact with a broad range technology, from hardware to virtualisation,
various OS support, Linux, Solaris, Windows and many different application, bind, SQL,
mysql, exim etc. Most of the applications requiring support where web based enabling
me to develop a good understanding of web protocols, especially around high availability
and traffic manipulation. This has provided me with a good foundation allowing me to
understand many of the problems affecting service migration to cloud platforms.
Whilst providing support I was also able to focus on the delivery of a number of smaller
projects such as the delivery of a web application firewall for a large web application
estate with many legacy services. Implementing a solution to reduce the overhead of
change control by automating the management of DNS, integrating bind with an on-site
Git repository and reducing risk by running a series of pre-flight checks to prevent
erroneous configuration entering the system whilst capturing changes to allow easy diff
and restore.
During this role I’ve had to re-act quickly to ad-hoc issues for example attacks on a high
profile site. In one case I worked with a colleague to provision infrastructure in AWS to
provide greater bandwidth and filtering to prevent further outages.
Eduserv ltd, Bath
Administrator, February 2007- August 2009
During my role as a systems administrator I was responsible for maintaining a
heterogeneous platform maintaining, standard operations such as deployments,
patching, antivirus, backups and storage. The role helped me develop my skills as a
systems administrator requiring a good understanding of scripting languages to support
multiple platforms. As part of the role I undertook oncall responsibilities, which involved
incident management 24x7. Being oncall enabled me to learn to quickly diagnose and
resolve issues using innovative solutions.
Eduserv ltd, Bath
Varying roles, 2004 – February 2007
I have worked at Eduserv in a number of roles mostly customer facing giving good
personal skills and strong understanding in the importance of customer satisfaction.
