Charles Dickens was born in 1812 in England and had a difficult childhood, as his father was imprisoned for debt and Dickens had to work in a factory at age 12. He later became a successful novelist and wrote famous works such as Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, and Great Expectations. Oliver Twist, published in 1838, tells the story of the orphan Oliver and criminals like Fagin and Bill Sikes. Dickens married Catherine Hogarth in 1836 and had 10 children before divorcing in 1858. He died in 1870 at the age of 58, having become one of the most popular writers of the Victorian era.
