Charles Babbage was an English philosopher and inventor born in 1791 in London who invented the first automatic calculator called the Difference Engine No. 1. He attended Trinity College, Cambridge where he studied mathematics and graduated without honors, later receiving his MA. Babbage is best remembered today for originating the concept of a programmable computer and worked for most of his life to develop analytical engines to perform general computations automatically according to general instructions provided through punched cards.
