EARLY WORK
• In early 1880s. Tesla joined Continental
Edison Company in Paris.
• Came to United States in 1884 to work
with Thomas Edison
WORKING WITH WESTINGHOUSE
• Tesla designed and held 40 patents on generators,
motors, and transformers, all developed for AC system.
• George Westinghouse purchased
patents from Tesla in hopes of
bringing Alternating Current to America.
Tesla’s egg of Columbus
Induction motor
TESLA’S NOTABLE WORK
• Radio
• Wireless
communication
• Wireless transmission
of electricity
• Vertical Take off and
Land (VTOL) Bi-
plane
• X-ray
• Tesla coil
COLORADO SPRINGS
• Discovered most important
discovery Terrestrial Stationary
Waves.
• Meant that Earth could be “Used as
a conductor and would be as
responsive as a tuning fork to
certain frequencies of electrical
vibrations”.

Things You didn’t Know about Nikola Tesla
• 1) Born at midnight, during an electric storm. The midwife said it meant
bad luck and he was going to be a son of the darkness, but his mother
said: “No, he is going to be a son of the light”.
• 2) Thought he should have a healthy body to have a healthy mind, so he
walked 8-10 km every day.
• 3) Took care of his appearance, and was always dressed elegantly.
• 4) Celibate his whole life. Never had a girlfriend, never got married and
never had children.
• 5) Loved the pigeons. Last days of his life he
went to the park every day to feed pigeons. Took
care of injured pigeons in his room, restoring
their health. Once he spent $2,000 to make an
orthopedic device for a pigeon.
• 6) He could speak perfectly 8 languages:
Croatian, Czech, English, French, German,
Hungarian, Italian, and Latin.
• 7) He was a friend of many writers, e.g. Mark
Twain. Both admired the other one’s work before
they met. Twain described a Tesla motor as the
most valuable patent since the invention of the
phone.
• 8) Didn’t like jewelry. Thought it was a waste of money.
• 9) Worked for Thomas Edison who promised to pay him $50,000 to do an
impossible task, but when Tesla had finished his task, Edison refused to pay
him.
• 10) First man to receive radio signals from the outer space.
• 11) Could do very advanced calculus in his mind without needing paper or
experiments. He just built his inventions when they were finished.
• 14) Died strangulated by German spies, who
dressed him up and left the body on his bed.
• 15) After his death, his documents were
taken by the US government and kept as top
secret.
12) Only slept 3 hours per day. His
neighbors said that he could stay active
150 hours.
13) Won the Nobel prize in 1915, but he
refused to accept it.
