3. 1. Living things
are made up of
cells.
Cells are the
basic unit of
structure and
function.
4. 2. Living things reproduce.
-produce offspring which resemble
the parents
5. Two types of reproduction:
Sexual – two cells from different
parents unite to produce the first
cell of a new organism.
Asexual – a new organism has a single
parent
6. 3. Living things are based on a
universal genetic code.
• Molecule called DNA contains the
genetic code which determines the
inherited traits of every organism on
earth.
7. 4. Living things change during their lifetime
-Grow (increase in shape and size)
-Develop (mature)
-Have a life cycle
8. 5. Living things use/need
energy.
Energy comes from food, used
to maintain body
Metabolism is the combination
of chemical reactions through
which an organism builds up or
breaks down materials as it
carries out its life processes.
9. 6. Living things respond to their
surroundings
React to
a stimulus.
Reaction is called a response.
10. 7. Living things maintain a
stable internal environment
HOMEOSTASIS: internal balance
Examples: sweating, panting,
shivering, etc.
11. 8. Living things as a group change over
time. (Evolve)
Change to better survive in their
environment.
ex: changes in temperature, climate, etc
Changes take place over a long period of
time.
