Think, Pair and Share Method

Definition
• Think-Pair Share is a collaborative learning
strategy that allows students to communicate
and work together to understand a reading,
concept, solve a problem, brainstorm, or
answer a question after they individually
think. First students think to themselves, then
they share their ideas with a partner or small
group, and the last step is to share with
everyone.
• Frang Lyman and his colleagues at the
University of Maryland as quoted by Arends
(1997), stated that Think Pair Share is an
effective way to make variations in the
atmosphere of class discussion patterns (La Iru
and La Ode Saifun Arihi, 20012:60).
The teacher uses the following phase steps
a. Step 1: Think (Think)
At the Think stage, students are asked to think independently about question
or problem posed. At this stage, students should write down their answers,
this is because the teacher can't monitor everything students‘ answers one by
one so that with the student's notes, the teacher can monitor all answers and
further improvements can be made or straightening out concepts and
thoughts that are still wrong. With the existence of this stage, the teacher can
reduce the problem of the presence of students who chat because at this
Think stage they will work alone to get solve the problem. The teacher asks a
question or problem related to lesson, asking students to think about the
answers to the problems posed independently.
b. Step 2: Pairing (Pairing)
At this stage the teacher asks students to pair up with friends
beside him, for example his seatmate. This is done so that
students who
concerned can exchange information with each other and
complement each other's answer ideas that have not been
thought of at the Think stage.
At this stage that there are two students for each pair. This
step can develop by accepting other partners to form groups
the four of them with the aim of enriching their thoughts
before sharing with other larger groups, such as classes. But
with consideration certain, sometimes large groups will be
less effective because they will reduce the space and
opportunity for each individual to think and reveal his identity.
The teacher directs students to pair up and discuss what they
have learned thought about it with my friends.
c. Step 3: Sharing (Sharing)
At this stage each pair or group then shares their thoughts,
ideas, and their answers with other partners or groups or can
go to the larger group is the class. This step is a refinement of
the previous steps, in meaning that this step helps all groups
end up at the same point same is the most correct answer.
Couples or groups who the thinking is still not perfect or has
not been completed. The problem is expected to be a better
understanding of the problem solving given based on the
explanation of other groups who had the opportunity to
express his thoughts. Or if time allows, you can too provide
opportunities for all groups to come forward and deliver
results discussion with their partner.
Steps of TPS Method
Here are the steps:
a. The teacher conveys the core material and competencies to be achieved.
b. Students are given a problem related to the subject
has been explained by the teacher, to then think about the solution
individual.
c. Students form pairs with their classmates and share their results
each other's thoughts. In this step, students must find common ground
of each other's thoughts.
d. Students present the results of the discussion with their partner in front of
the class.
e. Starting from these activities, the teacher directs the conversation on the
subject
problems and add material that has not been expressed by students.
f. The teacher concludes.
g. Closing.
