ADOLESCENTS

Adolescence – is a transitional phase of growth and development between childhood and
adulthood. According to The World Health Organization (WHO), adolescent is any person
between ages 10 and 19. This age range falls within WHO's definition of young people,
which refers to individuals between ages 10 and 24.

- ADOLESCENCE, DERIVED FROM THE LATIN WORD “ADOLESCERE” MEANING “TO GROW
UP” IS A CRITICAL DEVELOPMENTAL PERIOD.
- DURING ADOLESCENCE, MAJOR BIOLOGICAL AS WELL AS PSYCHOLOGICAL
DEVELOPMENTS TAKE PLACE.
- DEVELOPMENT OF SEXUALITY IS AN IMPORTANT BIO-PSYCHO-SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT,
WHICH TAKES AN ADULT SHAPE DURING THIS PERIOD.
- PUBERTY IS AN IMPORTANT LANDMARK OF SEXUALITY DEVELOPMENT THAT OCCURS IN
THE ADOLESCENCE.
Adolescents are a very diverse group.
They:
- Are in different stages of development
- Live in different circumstances
- Have very different needs and problems

ADOLESCENTS’ ACCESS LITERATURE RELATED
TO
• 1. Sexuality – is being sexed or having distinctions between the sexes. It is also a
sexual feelings, thoughts, attractions and behaviours towards other people.

• 2. Sexual crimes- These are individuals who have committed offenses as diverse as rape,
child sexual abuse, possession or transmission of child pornography, and indecent
exposure.

• 3. Violence- It is a behavior involving physical force intended to hurt, damage, or kill
someone or something.

4. Early marriage- It is found to be lack of access to education, economic opportunity, and
health services, particularly for girls, alongside severe poverty and weak legal and
enforcement mechanisms.

Mental health issues that may cause sexual issues include:
• Anxiety
• Depression
• Posttraumatic stress (PTSD)
• Issues with body image
• Trust issues

Physical issues that can impact sex or sexual expression include:
• Bowel or urinary problems
• Diabetes
• Heart and vascular issues
• Medication side-effects
• Hormone imbalance

ISSUES LINKED TO SEXUALITY
Sexual problems are not uncommon. Between 30% and 45% of adults may have one.
This depends on gender and age. Some common concerns of people seeking therapy include:
• Impotence
• Lack of sexual desire
• Anxiety or uncertainty about sexual orientation
• Conflicting sexual desires between partners
• Recovery from sexual abuse or assault
• Loneliness
• Body image issues
• Sexual impulses or compulsions that cause distress
• Promiscuous behavior

Pros of Having Pre- Marital Sex
If we do not explore our sexual side, we cannot
grow naturally and develop into it, and that
means that we cannot truly understand where
our sexual identity lies.
