During the Reign of Terror from 1793 to 1794, the Committee of Public Safety established revolutionary courts that executed almost 40,000 people, including Marie Antoinette. Armies were sent to cities to enforce control of the National Convention, executing over 1,800 citizens in Lyon as an example. The Committee took steps to shape a new French society called the Republic of Virtue, including controlling prices, observing the National Convention, and adopting a new calendar that eliminated references to Christianity.
