Public relations plays an important role in government at all levels. At the federal level, the President and his staff receive significant media attention to communicate their agenda to citizens. State governments also use public relations to promote tourism and inform constituents. Local governments employ information specialists to keep communities aware of news and issues. Election campaigns are a major focus of public relations, with spending on presidential races increasing from $2.6 billion in 2000 to $6 billion in 2012. Social media allows more voters to be informed and engaged in the political process.

Using a reasonable person standard, one might assume that millions of dollars in campaign contributions have a deleterious effect on a candidate’s behavior, given that the money has to come from someone’s pocket and there is no such thing as a free lunch. Looking back over the past 14 years, the pattern of change in presidential elections and midterm elections is the same – growth. Worse still, those who achieved victory in the House of Representatives outspent those who lost their bid by almost 3-to-1, and the delta between the costliest campaign and the most frugal was a whopping 101-to-1. (Center for Responsive Politics n.d.)
OpenSecrets.org
The aggregate cost of the 2012 elections exceeded 6 billion dollars. With nine zeros to the right of the significant digit, this is money from very deep pockets. In 2012, the top five Political Action Committees (PACs) contributed 16.8 million dollars. As significant as that may appear, the top five individual donors contributed 173.3 million dollars, and unlike the PACs who spread the funds between parties, the individual donors were monolithic in one direction or the other. (Center for Responsive Politics n.d.)
Lee Drutman, writing in The Washington Post, posits that no one is really trying to “buy” a candidate so much as they are establishing a foundation of understanding from which to establish a “relationship” with the elected official. For the small player or non-contributor in the process that is politics today, there is no “relationship” built on massive campaign contributions, leaving one to question just whom the elected official is representing when decisions are being made. (Drutman 2014)
Regardless of the aggregate cost of running a political campaign, unless someone has devised a mechanism to turn money into votes, purchasing an election is a fiction. It is a fiction sold to the public with the same carelessness displayed by the use of the term, “assault rifle” which may be an attempt to make the public think there are selectable-fire military weapons in use or the journalist is simply ignorant. (Pamer 2015)
Granted, in the 2012 elections in the House of Representative, losers only outspent winners in 25 races, but just as there are states and there are swing states, there is a similar nature reflected in political districts. For example, in California District 12, incumbent Nancy Pelosi (D) outspent challenger John Dennis (R) by a 4-to-1 margin ($2,001,648 to $480,226). When the winner was nearly a foregone conclusion, as was the case of the Democratic incumbent receiving 85% of the votes in a district containing the city of San Francisco, the fact that most of the money went to the favored candidate is only logical. (Center for Responsive Politics n.d.)

This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.
The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

2. What roles do public relations
play in Government?
Throughout the use of (social) media and public
communication, voters are able to make more
educated decisions when it comes to voting for
leaders.
3. The Federal Government
& Public Relations
Many U.S. Citizens are active participants in today’s political
society. Social Media, and television are able to keep most
citizens informed and up to date.
The President and his staff receive more
attention (media wise) than all of the other
government agencies combined.
In the U.S., government public relations staff are active at the
local, regional, and federal level.
4. State Governments & Public Relations
States, like the Federal Government, provides
information about it’s sequences to numerous
constituents.
Through different promotions and advertising,
states promote their tourism to persuade and
inform people about what they have to offer.
Many states even hire Public Relation Firms in order
to promote these campaigns. well.
5. Local Governments & Public Relations
This level of government includes cities which hire
information specialists to inform the community about news
and other information for many public departments.
Local governments hold meetings
as well to inform and interact with
citizens who are actively involved
or who may have concerns.
One way that cities promote their tourism is by publicizing
their own unique surroundings, including attractions, at
certain events, and in the newspapers, etc.
6. Election Campaigns
I found this topic very interesting regarding the
reading for this Chapter.
This information will be good to keep in mind
since next year we will elect a new President,
but also this relates to any election.
7. Election Campaigns Continued…
Campaign Costs:
Over time, costs of campaigns have increased tremendously. Many celebrities
give money or help in other ways in order to promote their preference party’s
campaign.
In 2000, 2.6 billion dollars was spent on the Presidential election campaign.
In 2012, 6 billion dollars was spent on the Presidential election campaign.
This shows that Public Relations for these campaigns are definitely active and continuously
increasing each election.
Think about what persuades you to vote for someone.
Do you see an advertisement on TV?
Read an article on social media?
A survey showed that 72% of U.S. citizens believe that by use of social media,
more people are affected and more drawn to vote for elections.
8. Think about and reflect on all of the different
ways Public Relations affects the Government at
all levels.
Even though I only hit on five of the major key
points in this chapter, I hope that everyone
learned a little something and found interesting
information regarding Chapter 17!
Thank You!
