Serology is the analysis of body fluids like blood, saliva, and semen. Historically, serology was an important forensic tool before DNA analysis. Key aspects of serology include:
- Blood contains plasma and cells including red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. Blood typing is based on antigens on red blood cells.
- Karl Landsteiner discovered the four main blood groups (A, B, AB, O) in 1900 based on antigens. The Rh factor was discovered in 1940 and is important for transfusions.
- Tests can determine if a stain is blood and if it is human blood. Blood typing further identifies the blood group using agglutination of antigens and
